MissFitAndNerdy experiments on her body, episode 1: Intermittent fasting! In an effort to get lean and thin more quickly in preparation for an event, I threw in intermittent fasting to see if it would help. I was not doing this for weight/fat loss, hence why I did not mention any weight fluctuation in the video. I just wanted to see what intermittent fasting would do to my body and if it would make it easier for me to maintain my physique.
If you have ever wondered the following, this video is for you:
    How does intermittent fasting work?
What are the benefits of intermittent fasting?
How do you start intermittent fasting?

I've lost 50 lbs over the past 12 months using the same type of intermittent fasting that you're following. I have 20 more lbs to go but will likely stay on this type of schedule for life. It's really the only thing that's worked for me. I basically don't eat anything after 4 or 5 p.m. each day.

Currently on week 9 of intermittent fasting (only eat 12pm to 8pm) with calorie derivation and working out 4-5 times weekly. Also have one light cheat meal weekly.
Went from 224.0 lbs to 183.4 lbs for 40.6lbs weight loss, gained endurance and strength.
Only tough times are sometimes in late morning or evenings around 10:30 pm when inactive, when active no problems.
When you start getting compliments it really makes it easier.
    I recommend.

2 meals, look up the "Egg diet" I eat 2 of those meals. Wed dinner is my cheat meal of the week. (Still don't go crazy)
I lost 47 lbs before I stopped my diet. I fell great and get lots of compliments. Now I eat healthy just trying to maintain.
Warning you will get really hungry about 10am and 10 pm. drink lots of water, it helps. Good luck

theres still a slight difference from Muslim Ramadan fasting and IF.. during IF , you can drink water. water is important to clean your body. and its a lifestyle. a long term eating habit. whereas muslim fast has something to do with spiritual cleansing. n most of the time, doesnt lose weight or gain right back up after Ramadan. but the cleansing part of the body system, yes.

I've done intermittent fasting since early Jan this year and went from 220lbs to 141lbs (obese bmi to healthy bmi so 79lbs lost in 5 months). I suffer from BED and I have an "all or nothing" mentality so IF was a comfortable middle ground because eating too early in the day for me would lead to binges. I would have all of my meals from 4pm and stop at around 7pm. Obviously this might be extreme for some people, but it has been the *only* thing that has ever worked for me getting the weight off finally.
Even when I reach my goal weight I'll still be sticking to IF because of the health benefits involved. I don't see it as a "diet" or anything, but more of a long term lifestyle.
    Also, subbed!

I've been doing intermittent fasting and it does work, almost too well. Earlier this year I went from 245 lbs down to 215 just before the summer doing 4 months of IF, and that was doing the 16/8. Now, i'm experimenting with the one meal a day style of IF, and so far it's been rough but I've been able to power through. The only exception I make for myself is when I have a full workday (I work in produce, so there's lots of heavy lifting and movement I have to make.) in which I will eat 2 meals, but on short days and days off of work, I eat only once a day then. It's been a real challenge but i'm already seeing results.

Its been a week since I started IF - and not only is it showing results on my body; which is great - but I didn't expect this other thing - I am actually happier. I haven't felt so consistently happy for a long time. I always craved - craved for food, drink, coffee, what have you.... something or the other; and my mood was not the best..... it suffered, all the time and not just for the craving. Now that I am IF-ing, eating raw vegan and high protein food, no coffee (yes I stopped completely), no tea either, no alcohol, ..... working out a little (need to up that) - I am happier. I feel up and that feeling stays, isnt illusive like before (now its here, now its gone - no more). I am a happier person and fasting, eating right, getting rid of carvings did this!! HA

First of cultures around the world have various fasting routines. Secondy, things like toxins are not made up hippie words. Your liver and kidneys are made to filter and covert toxins, scientific fact. Fasting gives them time to do some spring cleaning. Third, her intermittent fasting is only like 16 hours a day which leaves 8 hours to eat. Fasting isn't bad when done right and not confused with anorexia.

    • @cliffbrowning84
      @cliffbrowning84 Před 6 lety +1

Well, there are different ways to look at it. If you want immediate results and your digestion isn't great it gives everything a break and can eliminate bloat which makes you look 5 to 10 pounds more than you are. Yes you are correct in your statement. It all depends on time tables. When I cut weight in high school I ate very little for 3 days and would lose five pounds, then I ate normal for 4 days. I did this 3 to 4 times or weeks in a row. The trick was I slowed down after 3 days so I ate to get my metabolism back up for 4 days and repeated the cycle.

I fast every year as a Muslim and from what I've read, if you exercise during the day or before breaking your fast, you should eat high carb foods (to keep your muscles replenished) and exercise right before breaking your fast is best so your body can maximize nutrients from the food. Other than that try to get in good amounts of protein from lean meats and nuts, still get some carbs even if you don't exercise, get some healthy fats and fiber. Basically try to keep your diet clean of junk food and too much sugar for the most part as well as avoid over processed foods and there shouldn't be a problem (even if you cheat and have some no-no foods)

      breads(wraps are best alternative)
      pasta
      Anything Fried
Dairy (almond milk is a good sub for milk, if you cant svoid cheese, eat the low fat or provolone cheese),
Sugars, (this includes diet cokes)(sugar limit to no more than 4 grams per serving)
      Eat:
      Fish
      Chicken (white meat only)
      G-BOMBS
Greens, Veggies Veggies Veggies, Broccoli will be your best friend, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms to keep you Potassium up, Berries, and Seed and Nuts.
Brown Rice if you want to eat a little rice or Quinoa, but do not over do it.
      Water, Water Water.
Green Tea, no sugar. this will surpress hunger
      Black Coffee, no sugar.
when you break your first fasting days, you may experience diarrhea, this is normal, this will cause your body to lose electrolytes. to make up lost electrolytes, eat foods high in potassium(banana, mushrooms and magnesium. If you feel cloudy, lightheaded, fatigued the electrolytes will help kick you out of that, I would suggest Kombucha Tea as a good source of electrolytes.
Always consult with your Doctor before starting.
Your body will adjust to these changes. Overall be patient, this will take some time

'Variety is the spice of life' so enjoy various food groups especially fruits and vegetables. The key is just not to have anything in excess; take the recommended amount of essential vitamins and minerals either with your meals and/or be sure to choose foods rich in them.
As for intermittent fasting, your appetite may diminish a little but this is due to your body not being overworked with food throughout the day. It's good for the body to recover so you have nothing to worry about.

WHAT IF, It was like that for me when I started fasting for Ramadan but you get to know your body and know what to do/eat to get the most out of it :) Personally, it encouraged me to stop my sugar and caffeine addictions so that I wouldn't be uncomfortable during fasting. I imagine the same applies to fasting for other reasons. We eat between sundown and sun up so a lot of us plan high carb, high energy-making meals and drink a day's worth of water during this period. In my experience, your appetite curbs to the pattern you create for yourself.

When you get to low levels of body fat you'll be able to see your six pack. We usually store more fat on the lower part of the stomach which is why it's harder to make the abs there more visible. You can work lower abs with exercises like leg raises or mountain climbers, but the key thing is go hardcore on diet and cardio (preferably HIIT so you don't lose a lot of muscle).

Also, enjoyed the video! I’ve been doing intermittent fasting most of my adult life, without even thinking about it. I have never been able to get hungry for breakfast. Those times where I break the intermediate pattern for more than 4-5 days straight, I swell up preeeeetty fast, I get cranky, sometimes straight up depressed, I loose energy, my joints hurt, etc etc. Our bodies are still wired after the hunter gatherer-pattern. We are not supposed to keep our system in constant action by providing fuel for it around the clock... our bodies are wired to work for the food, enjoy it, only to start over again. If the food industry wasn’t making billions by keeping people in a consumer pattern which is completely harmful and WRONG, I firmly believe that periodic fasting would be common knowledge, taught from kindergarten to the old folks home...

I have continued doing it for the past 2 years to maintain. Upping the calories on the 2 light days. It works for me. I go up and down about 3 pounds a week and am able to keep where I want to be. I've had a few vacations where I gained more than I wanted but was able to reign in the calories again and bring it back down. It's really working well for me and I don't plan on changing.

The part of your video where you talk about drinking is pretty funny. It's so true that alcohol tends to impact you more quickly when practicing IF. However, make sure you're not so set on IF or anything else that you can't allow yourself flexibility. You body needs to have good nutrition before you can comfortably and safely stop eating. Otherwise you may find yourself much more hungry, light-headed, nauseated, etc. Thanks for sharing your journey; I love your honesty in this video. :)

    Hey girl,
    good job, good for you!
i tried IT before, but I think i was too aggressive about it.
it sure helped me look leaner and i lost about 2KG in about two months of this tough plan.
I however did not actually get to see my abs. i believe that if i could contain the stress and hunger, i could have gone that far. I will try again in the future.
The thing that puts me off about IT is that it can cause you to lose muscle mass over time.
I guess that IT is best used, as u said, intermittently, and not as a constant life habbit.
    Good luck!

I started my fitness journey 13 months ago at 197 lbs, 5’ 10 & 26% BF. I did 16/8 for four months with no tracking and no workout and dropped 30 lbs. I started hitting the gym and continued for another couple of months and dropped another 10 lbs. Then I got serious about tracking calories and macros watching my protein and keeping myself in a 500/day calorie deficit. I’m now 145 lbs and around 13% body fat. At around 15%, I started calorie cycling, eating 200 over on strength training days and 500 under on off days, while keeping my protein constant. My plan is to get to 10% and then start slow bulking by bringing my off days to maintenance calories. I’m in the best shape of my like and will be 59 in August. IF was the catalyst to get me going.

Alcohol is the priority when it enters your liver regardless of the caloric value. The liver will cease burning fat for 24 to 48hrs while dealing with the booze.

    • @jackcrow6453
      @jackcrow6453 Před 7 lety +2

This is only partially correct. It only stops burning fat while it handles the alcohol, which does not take very long at all (depending on the person of course). Your liver does NOT require 24-48 hours to process alcohol. The liver needs approximately one hour per ounce of alcohol to process. There are a few factors that can affect this, but it's not that long. Unless you go full binge: then you will need a while to process it.

I've been doing IF/high-fat, low-carb/fasted workouts for several months and it's worked beautifully. I took a year off from the gym (longest break ever for me in the last 15 years) due to graduate school/parenthood, and my body very, very quickly got back into shape. I actually stayed the same weight +/- 3 or so pounds (depending of level of hydration and sodium intake) while losing 3 inches around my waist. So I basically lost 15 pounds of fat and recovered 15 pounds of muscle simultaneously. I say recovered because that's what it was - getting back lost gains, which I find is easier to do than to make the gains in the first place (excluding beginner gains, that is).
As someone in a research-driven field, I also appreciate your controlling of variables to focus in on your dependent variables as deftly as possible. It's nice to see other intelligent/scientifically minded folks taking an empirical approach to fitness.
May I ask what you majored in at MIT? Are you going to do graduate school? I earned a full academic scholarship to an Tier 1-rated academic university and graduated 1 of 1,156 while participating in the honors college, upping the challenge, but it was no biggie (I've always taken to intellectual pursuits like a fish-to-water). I was blessed to perform at the same level in both of my grad programs too.
