In the simplest way possible, Edward VIII didnt want to be king as he preferred a playboy lifestyle with his lover Wallace and hated the ceremony of being monarch. George VI didnt want the throne because he was an incredibly shy and timid man with a crippling speach impediment.

The best question asked - "Why would the King give up his throne for a twice-divorced American?" The answer depends very much on opinion, although the king always maintained that was for love." But let's take a closer look.
At the outbreak of the First World War, the future King - at that time a young prince - became a soldier and indeed served in the trenches; he was also quite popular with the troops, as he was likeable, personable and a dashing young man. One must remember though, that he was the eldest son of Queen Victoria's children....but his father - Victoria's husband - was a German (who could not speak English)!
By the mid-late 1930's, rumour had it that Germany was likely to head towards another war, and moreso when some Guy called Hitler managed to get himself elected as Chancellor of Germany. It was then becoming increasingly clear that a war was in the offing. Edward was soon to marry this Amercan commoner, but as a newly-appointed King, such a marriage was aginst all the Constitutional Rules. In the meantime, he had visited Germany ...AND Hitler ...and it was thought that his loyalties to the UK were fading in favour of his apparent Nazi sympathies. It was then that he made the decision to abdicate for love of this woman.
It did not go down well in any British circles - especially in the Royal Family and the British Government. However, he made his decision, and so the crown fell to his brother George. George was of a more fragile person than Edward, and he presumably felt that becoming the Monarch had never been in his mind, for whatever reason. nevertheless, he took on the role, and as it turned out, he was a very popular king, something that came to the fore during the 2nd World War. Evacuation of the Royal Family from London was high on the Government's agenda, but the King preferred to remain steadfastly "With his people" - which greatly increased his popularity.
Due to his dealings with Germany, in combination with the marriage to the Amercan, Edward lost all of his royal privileges, and they spent the rest of their lives alternately in America and France (by this time, after Germany's collapse, they would not have been welcomed in Germany)!
You can perhaps see the parallels regarding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - a love affair between a British prince and a divorced American - a prime case of deja vu!
I hope this potted version answers your questions.

    • @TheGarryq

@@StonedDragons I don't think many would argue that, although your point is superfluous to the point. For a second-in-line for the throne to flout the constitutional role by marrying an American divorcee, it was history repeating itself with Harry's break. Both princes were popular in their youth, but once they married a non-British commoner and turned their back on their own family, popular support waned very quickly. In Edward's case, his Nazi sympathies made it impossible for him to remain in the UK. With Harry, it was denigrating his own family (and who could forget his insensitivity in dressing-up in a Nazi uniform)? It's doubtful if the British public would ever welcome him back to British shores.

    • @StonedDragons
      @StonedDragons Před 3 lety

@@reggriffiths5769 They (the public) welcomed him back whole heartedly the few times he visited to the extent the royal family, well made a very pointed matter of 'there can only be one king of England' and I suspect privately drove home that he should stay in the USA and not muck things up at home anymore.
The problem wasn't that he married a commoner, that would of been completely legal and hardly the first time it's happened. The problem was she was a divorcee, twice over and that interfered with the future kings role as head of the Anglican church.
Also it should be noted the UK has no written constitution, the closest to that would be the magna carta and it carries legal force only in determining the spirit of current law. At least outside the USA where it ironically has more legal force being included, in full, in several state constitutions as it was used as the basis for arguments relating to American independence.

Duty is a big part of being a Royal but there technically is a choice especially for those just outside of direct succession. Zara Tindall has lived a successful private life only turning up for family events and doing private charity work. If William really was against the idea of Being King he could have spoken up or sent a signal like a small private wedding. What would he want to do instead at least with Charles we know what that would be, his hobbies of farming and gardening are well known. What are Williams hobbies what does he enjoy outside of Royal duties.
That's one of the reasons why Harry and Meghan are so hated now in the UK as they had a big state wedding and got big titles. When they said "I DO" as it was a state wedding there was an implied vow there that said I give myself and commit myself to duty and charitable works. When they said on Oprah that the public wedding was an act it was a slap in the face to royalists, it was saying I want privilege but not responsibility. If H & M had had a small non state wedding with little pageantry and maybe didn't get entitled people would have expected them to step back and be happy for them. Don't forget all the public pageantry is mostly a 19th and 20th century invention as the public wanted to be more involved with the Royalty.
The Question is what's so wrong with following in the family business especially if you enjoy it or at least don't detest it and can't think of anything better. I always used to think from the pictures that Harry liked Royal duties more than William. I guess the biggest downside of Royalty is the Press, they are like predators just waiting to pounce on the slightest slip even if the public aren't too bothered. Like those pics of Kate when she had a reasonable expectation of privacy. The fact the pictures were published was condemned more than the actions portrayed in the picture itself.

Parliament or Crown, debate was had Parliament won. Poor old, mad George doubt he remembered much. Edward also had links to the Nazi party, was a good time boy, so politics came into it, again. Unwritten rule Crown must be apolitical. Queen's husband died, spectacular funeral, yesterday. Well worth a watch. Nearly all the Royal families in Europe are related.

  • @Skerdy

Edward did NOT abandon the Crown for some American... he actually thought he could make it work. He married who he wanted and he was the King and that was that... but the Parliament and the Prime Minister at the time had other ideas, so they forced the issue, and he had to abdicate. (You may fuck who you want, but that doesn't mean you may marry who you fuck, you get me?)
His brother George, on the other hand was very shy, a family man that didn't want the responsibilities and had a speech impediment... he really did not want to be in the spotlight. He did his job egregiously, but he hated every second of it, and indeed this brought him to an early grave just due to the stress of the position. George's wife always hated her American sister-in-law, because without her, her George would have NOT been King and he would have been far more happier and probably would have lived longer.
George often used to refer to his family (his wife and 2 daughter) as the "the four of us", and it was very clear that THAT was what really mattered to him: "the four of them".
But he did his duty to the very end! That's a King I can follow.

The abdication of Edward over his American floozy actually saved the country from defeat in WWII. Wallis Simpson had affairs with some prominent Nazis and Edward himself was a supporter of Hitler. His quiet brother, George VI, was an infinitely better king.
George was a shy man, with a stutter, who had never wanted any attention. His wife always believed that the strain of being king led to his early death. She was also a treasure. When Buckingham Palace was bombed, she said she could now look the East End (which was being bombed every night) in the face.

    • @martingibbs1179
      @martingibbs1179 Před 3 lety

Perhaps that's so but Royalty is not an elected position of the most popular, that's what leads to "very messy times". Either you respect the institution or you don't, HRH Prince Charles is unlucky in that the generation that identifies with him and shares his ideals are all dying of old age. Right now people want HRH Prince William as he identifies with the younger generation more but odds are by the time the Crown comes to William the people will want George more. Well if the Royalty allow themselves to be overly influenced by celebrity culture then odds are we will do away with them. Celebrities are too polarising and don't please everyone. Royalty only works if they are popular by a large amount, imagine if Trump were a King he would have likely ended up like Charles 1st.
Though I can see a benefit of the Crown skipping Charles as it will prevent Archie from ever being entitled to be a Prince. That should please Meghan who wanted her son to be raised "normal".

Edward VII was totally committed to marrying Mrs Simpson and he was a total party boy. He loved the socialite lifestyle, he loved to party and didn’t fancy the responsibility of being Monarch. It is often stated that he also said he’d abdicate if I can’t have her, be a party boy and King... he wanted it all and he expected the rules to be changed for him, and did not get his way, so he took his toys and left.
George VI grew up as “the Spare” he never expected to be Monarch, he didn’t wish to be Monarch, he was far more reserved than his brother, he was pretty shy, and had a speech impediment. He was also already married and had 2 young daughters: Elizabeth and Margaret. He didn’t want to force the Monarchy upon his daughters. Once his brother took the crown and produced his “heir and a spare” Edward would know his daughters would be free to live their own lives (within royal rules of course).
But Edward fecked of, and suddenly Bertie (George) was King and his eldest Daughter, Elizabeth would succeed him. Elizabeth had barely married herself when George passed and the young Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II.
What they failed to mention here is that Elizabeth actually in recent years re-wrote the Rules of Succession... Now the next Monarch is not Male then to Female if no Male. Now ANY older child becomes the Monarch, Male or Female.
This won’t affect for several Years/generations, because next in line is Charles: William: George: ??
What would normally happen here is that if George were to fail to succeed Princess Charlotte should be skipped over and the crown go to Prince Louis. But now should George not be crowned. Charlotte is older than Louis, and therefore she would take the throne.
This also means that when George starts his family, his eldest child will be Heir to the Monarchy, whether this child is Male or Female.
Meaning from now on Daughters will no longer be skipped in line by younger brothers...
This still means we have will not have another Queen Regent in our lifetimes... as it’s a long time before Young George will be passing the crown to his descendant... be they Male or Female. So once we lose Her Majesty Elizabeth II, we will have at least 3 kings in a row on the throne.
Although many in the UK do NOT wish Charles to take the Throne and it’s often joked that Elizabeth is determined to outlive Charles because he pissed her off with the whole Diana/Camilla debacle.
Most Brits would rather see the Throne pass from Elizabeth II to William.

As king, your time is scheduled from morning to night, your life is not really your own. King George VI paid approx. £300,000 to Edward for two houses. He received an annual allowance. He had his love, he had freedom and he had money.

Being the monarch isn't all it's cracked up to be. With great power comes great responsibility., perhaps Edward didn't want the responsibility. I'm sorry his decision lead to the inadvertent death of his younger brother, I'm sure he was, but at least we got to have one of the greatest (if not the greatest) monarchs in British history because of it.
Also, you remark at the end that it's not _that_ crazy. But this was EXTREMELY simplified. It gets more crazy the deeper you delve. I used to have a wooden ruler with a list of the British monarchs written on the back and I thought the same as you for a while. But every time I've tried to go into it a little deeper I've spent hours trawling through wiki article after wiki article and I've realised it's very messy!

HRH King George VI was reluctant to be King because he had a terrible stammer and as 2nd son had not been raised studying the Constiution. Reluctant as he may have been he was a fantastic King and gave us an amazing Monarch when he died. HRH Queen Elizabeth II. His brother Edward abdicated the throne for love. Parliament refused to let him marry her as she was a divorcee. They were both linked as being Nazi supporters during the war and assured Germany that if they kept bombing Britain that we would give up. Thank goodness for King George VI and Sir Winston Churchill. HRH Queen Elizabeth then a Princess repaired military vehicles and drove an ambulance during the war. HRH Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh served in the navy. Our Queen is one strong lady. Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson were communist sympathisers since WWI. The Nazi Embassy used to send her a dozen carnations everyday. She was still married to a smuck in Chicago and was also cheating on King Edward VIII behind his back. They were also Nazi sympathisers who visited Hitler before WWII. The Monarch may also never divorce period. At the time The future Monarch could not marry a divorcee either, being the head of The Church. So he was unofficially set aside before his coronation as king and was shipped off to France with his Mrs Simpson. HM Queen Elizabeth II never forgave nor pardoned him for his Nazi sympathies. She did pay his life long bills and expenses. For the remainder of his life, he wasn't allowed back on UK soil. He tried but HM put a stop to it. He only came to the UK in a box ready for his burial in 1972. Wallis Simpson passed in 1986 in France. Both were allowed to be buried together at Royal burial ground, Frogmore in Berkshire UK. At the time they were considered massively huge security risks.

King Edsward VIII was a playing and a friend of Hitler. Nobody doubts he loved Mrs. Simpson but it is also possible he fancied being King but having a 'strong' man (Hitler) to run the place for him. Marrying a divorcee would separate him from the church, which would then have no claim on him. His brother (Albert) had a serious stammer and was shy, so there had been no effort to prepare him for the throne.A couple of years of unpopularity as King ( George VI) followed y a couple of years of unpopular war should make the public willing to take him back as King with Adolf doing all the work for him.. This plan went past-shaped because Chuchill and the Battenburgs wanted to get their families on the throne.Just finally check Churchill's middle. Name. Also Diana's surname. You might see where all this is leading A glance at Philip Battenburg's first four years, his mother's did-interest and some Swedish people called 'Oldendatrf ' might also help.
