British viewers have the Royal Yacht Association so this video is really good for the American market. However is was really cool to watch

Highly recommend ASA. I did 101 in November and it gave me a ton of confidence. Turns out I knew more than I thought and everything came pretty natural. Can't wait to do 102 in San Diego later this year.

Just finished 101,103 and 104 courses from Colgate offshore in Captiva Island, Florida. It was an excellent course including three ASA tests. I highly recommend it for thorough and quick introduction to sailing

Got my keelboat Cert through my Yacht Club in San Diego.
    Harbor Yacht Club.
Nice thing about that is I flew in from Alaska, with the Yacht club next to the Airport. Hotel at the Harbor Nxt to club house and across the street from San Diego International Airport.
$500 to join and $45 a month membership. They bank $25/month for renting fleet boats when you show up to rent.
We made that work for about 7 years or so. My wife and I got our KB Certs with membership discount. Was a good way.

This is a very helpful video...thanks. I imagine that a new sailor's skills and confidence will improve significantly as they work their way through these courses. Thanks for advertising the ASA...it's a great resource for all of us. Cheers.

Your local sailing club might also promote regular races and boat owners need crew on those! Show up 2h before the race and network, you might get on a boat for free, regularly, and learn a ton!

very helpful to get a basic idea about it. also very nice to hear that it's doable to start going at it fairly quickly without the need of years of training or anything. (obvi more experience is better, but if you're like me and just want to start out, it's nice to hear that its less daunting than it looks and that you can actually get started on the 'fun part' fairly quickly :p )
TL;DR for the next paragraph: if you're not living in the USA and are watching this vid, do keep in mind that local regulations may differ and you might need to get certified and do more/less (and pay more/less) to get certified.
    what I mean is:
after looking into it, it seems like an ICC certificate is a good idea to have for worldwide sailing (some marinas want to see certification before allowing you to dock) but getting that certification via 'my countries methods' means first getting a local 'limited cert' for inland sailing (rivers/lakes/..), then a 'general certification' to sail the shores as well. for which you need to do both the theory and practical exam for sailing and motor boats (with an nice accompanying pricetag, of course); AND then convert it into an ICC certification. (at least the general sailing cert is enough for private cruising anywhere, for commercial sailing you'd need another extra 'skipper' certification on top of it.)
so there's still a decent pricetag to the certification over here, apparently a few years ago you could just buy a boat and start going without any experience (if it was a sub 50ft boat that couldn't go more than about 10 knots) but that got changed recently. I understand why, of course, but it went from being free, and getting certified by proving experience, to being fairly expensive to be allowed to make your first trip. ( but at least the general cert is enough to get an ICC cert which should make international sailing easier, right?)

I wonder if taking sailing classes would have gave me more knowledge than I have being self-taught. I've done Coastal cruising already, I actually started out doing Coastal cruising. I didn't even know I was doing it I just thought I was going from place to place on my sailboat that I bought for $100 in Long Beach California. A 30 ft Sloop built like a tank, a Pearson Vanguard. Some of the guys at the marina help me clean it up, I didn't even know them, they just came out of the woodwork and helped me clean up the boat. They showed me how to raise the sails, I got the engine running and sailed solo to Catalina Island not too long after. I think confidence goes a long way, I think Common Sense goes a very long way, I never really went so far out that I couldn't easily check the weather for the next few days.

When you describe the courses they seem pretty easy. As a canadian, if you look at the courses given by SAIL CANADA, they look very in depth and complicated. Wonder what the différences are. I thought to myself...OMG!!! We do tend to go "overboard" (see what I did there...) with safety and the rest. Thoughts?

hello there is only one America, named after Américo Vespucci, ( vespunci ) a subject of the kingdom of Aragon and Castilla . America occupy the north and south hemisphere of planet Earth, divide in a imaginary line called by cartographers , LATITUDE 0. Only English cartographers erroneously name the continent, in North, South, Central, and Caribbean Islands, too divide it is people that fought a war of independence from England. Thanks so much for correctly naming the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ( you are one of a few that is not conditioned by the English ). saludos
