  • Victor Grikes had part of his larynx removed at 70 years old. Now 90, he's been communicating with a stoma for 20 years.
Victor joined the New Voice Club to help with his rehabilitation - he's been a member ever since his surgery.

This needs to be promoted. People need to see and u understand that people do lose their voices and its NORMAL we need to see this so that these people will not feel miserable when they talk like this in public.

When the larynx is removed, the food & air tubes have to be separated. The air tube has to go somewhere so the patient can breathe, so it exits through a hole in the throat; this hole is called a stoma and this is what she breathes through instead of her nose or mouth.
Anyways, she probably has COPD or something similar and needs supplemental oxygen. It's the same thing as someone wearing an oxygen mask with a tank at home, but.. wearing it like that won't do her any good since she cannot breathe through her mouth or nose. So it goes over her stoma instead.

It is a moisture for the stoma and traquea. They must "vape" 3 times per day to keep it clean and moistured. Those are lucky ones. Many people get stoma recurrence after total laryngectomy and they are left behind. They usually let them die. But no body talks about it. Kids from young age should be introduced to laryngectomy patients, hopefully some would not start smoking.
