    At 30 years after leaving the factory my 928 had no mods, no rust, no fender or door dents, just a few minor nose dings from stones. Built like a tank, drove like a dream with the 5 speed.

    Great information. I just bought a red '89 GT with 16 thousand miles on it. It's like brand new. Cost me $88 thousand USD. Doing a major service, replacing belts, pumps, tires, etc is another $15 thousand or so. I'll only drive it between March and end of Sept and swap it every other day with my 911 to keep the miles down.

    It’s great seeing these informational videos on the 928. I searched for nearly a year before landing one that checked all the boxes you mentioned. 1990 auto, 2 owner with mileage correct miles, and interior in great shape. You’re a 100% right about the low mileage cars. The ones I had inspected were pure and simply money pits. They are truly a drivers car. Keep these videos coming, and I’ll grab a bag of popcorn. 1000% correct about the interiors. You will spend a fortune trying to fix an interior in these cars and it will never look right or feel like it's supposed to. Cheap and easy to fix the mechanicals like you said, especially if you can do the work yourself. These cars are great but never buy one with a roached out interior

    So true about the interiors from what I have been seeing. Just sold my two 944’s that I have had for decades and my dream classic Porsche has been a red, 5 speed 86 928S or an early 928 auto in silver (yeah risky business) but man is it hard to find examples that have good interiors.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes Kristian, it’s almost all about the interiors with 928’s. You can still buy a new dashboard from Porsche for about $2k US, but that’s just the dashboard...the Pod is an extra $900. How about the rest of the interior? Big $$$. Take your time and find the nicest one, they’re still many... Also, the hunt is part of the fun 😎

    You’re mileage may vary. My 928 needed deferred maintenance and parts are really expensive. $10k to $15k is the generally agreed budget to get a car current and reliable (just the deferred maint.). Especially if you want to drive them regularly and for big distances. True words about wiring and previous owner “upgrades” and sun damage. Very true.

    2 weeks ago on my 87 S4 the heat exchanger for the gear box oil ruptured in the radiator, auto trans oil in the engine coolant (looks like a strawberry milkshake), probably water in the gear box too. The radiator is not that big of a deal to replace, same for cleaning out the engine coolant, but the auto trans might need a full rebuild as the water unglues the friction material from the wet clutch plates. My radiator appears to be original and has been fine up until now but in hind sight probably should have replaced it.

    Bought an '88 928 S4 auto back in 2007 or so. It arrived off the truck with the timing belt tensioner light on... and thus it began. ;-) Turned out the timing belt service wasn't too big of a deal to do. Steering rack went next and surprisingly it wasn't that horrible to do either. Then the bearing in the torque tube went. That was, uh, a bit more work. ;-) Dropped the rear transaxle out of the car with the suspension in a friend's shop and got a rebuilt tube from 928 International. The only nerve wracking part was getting the new torque tube in to perfect spec to avoid crankshaft damage. I'm not mechanic but these cars aren't nearly as bad to work on as many say.

    Hi, I just came across your videos.
    Long story short,...I am highly interested in buying a 928.
    I am no Porsche expert by any means so, let me ask.
    If I buy a good one a really good shape and parts are needed, does Porsche still make official parts for the 928?
    You mention the seats and dashboard being cracked, does Porsche sell the dashboard and seats for the 928?
    Thank you so much.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Před 9 měsíci

      Yesss, Porsche is still making original parts + there’s also lots of aftermarket solutions for any issues. I think you’ll find that the Porsche 928 has more support/resources than most cars….it’s actually one of the biggest reasons to buy one: The Community. CHECK OUT: Rennlist 928 forums.
      The dashboards are still available new, but you might have to call around different dealers. Most people want black, so that’s the hardest to find…but you can easily paint a new burgundy dashboard black with SEM Dyes (worth it!). Seats are not as easy to find, but if the car has under 100k miles…the seats should be perfect 💯💯
      The best time to buy is the Winter, prices easily drop 15%-20%. Take your time to find a minty one☝️

      You’ll love an early manual 928! Define better? It’s already a great gearbox, it just should not be speed shifted. These cars were often driven like race cars, and well…the sincros don’t like that. But if the transmission on the car is shifting perfectly, chances are really good that it will stay that way for a loooong time. Hope you find a cool one, the hunt is half the fun!

      @HernanSpeed  Před 3 lety

      It’s part of its history.. Does it have a rebuilt/branded title? Or was it a fender bender? A CarFax will show if it was serious, or just a small accident. If the owner has the receipt of the work done, even better ✅

    Honest Question, if i find a 928 with a bad interior and i plan to add new seats and re-do it, is it still ok to get one with a bad interior?

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Před 2 lety

      Hi Noah, checkout prices on interior parts in ebay. To redo a cracked Dashboard, it’s $1300+…just the dash, not the pod. That being said, there are lots of ways to do it on the cheap if you don’t mind it looking ‘just ok’. A plastic dashcap is cheap, but warps fast. You can also add 944 seats, they bolt on….but it starts looking… you get the idea.

    what manual trans model years have the synchros like glass?

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Před 2 lety

      The Porsche made transmissions from 1978-1984 have the weaker synchros. They’re still great! But can’t be speed shifted like modern transmissions. If care is taken, they also last a long time.
      The newer updated Borg Warner designed transmissions came in after 1985 + . These drive like any normal manual and very little attention is needed when shifting gears ⚙️
      If you’re looking to buy a Porsche 928, I would go for condition first. If the car has been maintained properly, you’ll have lots of fun and nooo headaches😎

    🥲😳🥲 well I saw this video 2 weeks to late. I bought a 79 928 with 73k. Arizona sun beat the interior to crap. I thought it was going to be easy getting it restored inside now this vid has scared me. I hope I don’t end up regretting my purchase.

      @HernanSpeed  Před 3 lety +1

      JJ thanks for watching! 🔥🔥 Congrats on your purchase! 1979 is a great year, it’s got the CIS fuel injection…simple-simple ( a good thing!). If the car is running well, restore as you enjoy. Half the fun in owning a classic is finding parts and restoring. Put up a search alert on Google for the dashboard/pod, those will be the hardest to find (but they’re out there!).
      Don’t stress, it’s a beautiful car and when you finish restoring it… you’ll soon be looking for the 2nd one! 😁

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Před 3 lety +1

      Also, if you’re not picky about originality. Newer front Porsche seats will bolt right on, all 964 993 944 968 seats will bolt on… no mods needed! Boxster 996 997 seats will need the tracks modded, but it’s also done all the time.

Thankfully I am somewhat mechanically inclined. My dad an I restored a 64 Corvair the only thing we sent to the shop was the interior and paint, but we pulled everything out and reinstalled everything ourselves. Motor and trans we took apart and put it back together in the back yard. I’m excited to tear into this 928. This will be my first project on my own

      I’ve discovered that the best solution is getting a parts car that already has a good interior, they pop up for sale all the time on FB marketplace.
      Many of these 928’s get parked for extended periods, the fuel pump freezes and they get sold as non-runners. These are the deals if you’re willing to do the work. -Get parts you need, and resell the rest… You might even make a few 💵👊

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Před 2 lety +1

      The automatics on the 928’s are GREAT! The manuals are a little bit more fun, but the autos are fun also! The 928’s engine has so much flexible power, you’re skipping gears during normal driving on the manual anyways. Drive both and you’ll see what I mean.
      If buying an auto, I’d go for the 1983+ years.. Why? Those are 4 speeds VS 3 speeds in the earlier cars. Big difference in driving. The transmission is a Mercedes unit, so it also lasts a loooong time!
