      It simply doesn’t work like that, boo. Like Staci said, there are so many cultures across the world. I don’t know anyone (unless it is their profession, or are studying to actually GO there one day) who does this. As we have our own country to worry about, and the MANY cultures in it, and introduced to it.
      America is a tapestry of cultures, so trust me when I say we have our fair share of that as well.

    The Eurovision Song Contest is not remotely comparable to The Voice or American Idol. It is not a vocal talent show, it is a song contest that had been running annually since 1956. Previous winners include Celine Dion and Abba. Each country sends an original song each year, and the winner is the decided by 50/50 split expert jury and public vote.

      @leylakeyne2607 Před 5 lety +31

      True, and the vote isn't really about their voice/stage presence. It's basically which country has more allies, politically or just neighbouring countries. As each country can't vote for themselves.

    • @Sanchordia
      @Sanchordia Před 5 lety +23

      Leyla, I don't think that is really true either. If it were just which country had the most friends, then the same country would win every year. Israel for example has no neighbours in the contest, are politically isolated, and yet were victorious this year. Austria won the whole contest in 2014, yet in 2015 received no points at all. The most popular act wins, that is all there really is to it.

      Leyla I love watching the Eurovision Song Contest just to guess the amount of points awarded to one country by another country. My mum and I got really really good at it because like you said, it’s a bit of a popularity contest and a lot of the countries will give 12, 10 and 8 points to the same country every year. Also, we’re in the UK so we get the points in English and in French (I guess England and France shares the same presenters and broadcast or whatever) so when we guessed the number of points we’d say it in English and then repeat it in French like they do on the TV.

    First of all, don't be afraid to listen to a European Song Competition. This was the reality show before reality shows were a thing. Everything already said here all true. Israel is a country in the middle East that has been permitted to join this European competition probably for political reasons of being a secluded country living amongst countries who doubt its legitimacy. The reason this son won despite all these comments is first because it's super catchy and super weird, so it stuck out of the 36 other songs, some of which were incredible. It is also important to note, that while each country voted with its points the song didn't lead, but once the popular vote came in, it did. This win is important because it showed that people liked the message of being the underdog. Netta spoke about being the girl that was called ugly that doesn't deserve to be a winner and many many people identified with that idea, strengthening her and telling her she can be their hero and she can be beautiful despite what society says about beauty. Lastly, she's got MAD pipes! She can sing the shit out of the dictionary, she's amazing!!! She deserves this win and she will have a huge career because her beat boxing is also incredible and her entire package is unique and excellent.

    In Eurovision 2016 the hosts Petra Mede and Måns Zelmerlöw (who won the competition the previous year) did an interval act during one of the semifinals. It's called "Story of ESC (That's Eurovision)". It's a song which basically explains how the contest started and how it works.
    During the grand final they did another interval act called "Love Love, Peace Peace" and it's a MASTERPIECE. Basically it's a parody of the festival. They did a synthesis of elements that many ESC songs have in common. They also mentioned and did a recreation of iconic entries from (mostly) the last decade. And some former winners appear too, like Alexander Rybak or Lordi.
    So if you wanna know more about Eurovision you should check those performances. Especially Love Love Peace Peace. It's so good you don't even need to understand the references to enjoy it.

    Looking at all the comments I notice something that everybody gets wrong.... it's NOT a singing competition, it really is a POLITICAL game. What country gives what country points. And what's so obvious about it is is because the points of the audience at home is always very different to what country points go to. All the neighbour countries give eachother their points, stuff like that

      The jury is different then the televise because the jury is made of music professionals or those involved in media and entertainment, so they’re judging based on musicality and vocals and artistic-ness of the performance. Basically a way so that something incredibley flashy or silly doesn’t win just because of ridiculousness. Televote are the people, so sometimes they’re swayed by flashy staging or costumes rather than the song content, that’s why with the split, it’s a good middle ground to find where they meet. It was why Ukraine was awarded basically no points from the jury (he comes out of a coffin and proceeds to sit and play at a burning piano) and why Austria did well (nice genre of song, great vocals) but Israel won the televote and scored very high with the jury, so it’s a combination of this that actually contributes to the final winner. Some countries are politically voting for their neighbors (Greece/Cyrprus, Scandinavia, balkans, etc) but you don’t just give one vote, it’s a Gaussian distribution from 12 to 1 point so even If you give Greece 12 points, you gotta award who you actually like a decent amount too. Also no European countries owe Israel anything. Same with Portugal last year who stole number one in both televote and jury.

    • @Edandush
      @Edandush Před 5 lety +39

    So basically everyone wants their country to win Eurovision. Also, we have no idea how Australia got into Eurovision last year, we, europeans, are as confused as everyone else. But that’s not the point. People having the contest all over the country searching for the best contestant for like a month, can be a professional singer or just a amazing unknown singer whatever. Then, usually in may, the semifinals and finals are happening. It’s kinda like the olympics but for singers and just for Europe (except for Australia but I don’t care I love that country tho). If my country won I don’t know if they’d afford hosting all those foreign singer I swear to God but I still want it to win just for the sake of it because I think we never did 😂😂

    If I'm gonna try to explain it in american terms Eurovision is about as big as Super bowl. A bit like the Olympics for music.
    Everyone watches it. Every country sends in a song and they compete.
    But the whole show is fabulously wonderfully weird. Like this song, nothing on how weird it can get.
    It's been going on since the 50's and are in some ways part of a long going peace effort in the EU. Talent Shows has nothing to do with this.
    You should watch it. It's really is something special. It's always a lot, and definitely not only in a good way.
    I would recommend watching it with the BBC commentary, they are pretty much considered to have the best and funniest commentary.
    And who the host country is really matters. Like the production value is all over the place. Sweden have been highly praised as a host country, either malmö 2013 or stockholm 2016 are both good.
    But last year in portugal was good. If you want to see the context for this performance.

    Man, so many angry man-children in the
    comments here.
    Anyway, it's entirely goddamn unnecessary to insult him for not knowing what Eurovision is about and struggling to understand the lyrics. There's not a whole lot of Eurovision coverage or even promotional material for it here in Amerclca. The lyrics being difficult to pick out throughout some spots have nothing to do with accents, and everything to do with the speed, the other musical elements that at times make it simply hard to hear the words, and most importantly, the _intentional_ stylized pronunciation that every singer employs to some degree. In that regard, she reminds me a bit of Adele, who is often difficult to understand.
    But I digress. What I originally wanted to do here, before everyone else's ignorance frustrated me, was make a request! Would you consider reacting to Elina Ivashchenko performing "1944" on The Voice Kids Ukraine? That is the song that won Eurovision in 2016, but I believe Elina's performance far surpasses the original, which is already a fantastic song to begin with!

    I wouldnt compare this to an american idol and voice cuz every country has a competitions like these ones.. Eurovision is international.... each country that wants to compete chooses a one representative singer with a song .... one of them winns.. now that Netta from Israel won, the next eurovision is going to take place in israel.... its always the winning country to host the competition. american idol and voice and european competitions being a coppy of these two happen only inside of a country and usually there are people who arent famous and recognised. In eurovision, the contestants are already a singers recognised in their own country.. for example if the united states wanted to attend eurovision, you guys would pick an already existing singer and song which u think is the best one and has a chance to win ... and u send the singer to perform the song to the country where the eurovision is being hosted.... thats it... its not about talent... its not a talent competition cuz they already are talented and are singers..... its about the best song and the best performance... Im surprised u didnt understand what she was singing because the sang the whole song in english...not everybody does that many contestants sing in their native language.....sometimes the message is not important and the song is just catchy and they have a good performance.... in this song, the message was important for you to understand whats going on.. good thing she was singing in english

    As a European I’ve grown up with Eurovision and it was never confusing, so let me try to explain it simply for everyone that doesn’t know what it is.
    Every European country that wants to compete sends a representative whether this is trough a own competition in their country like the Scandinavian countries does or something else.
    Then every country except Germany, France, the uk, Italy, Spain (the big five) and last years winning country goes trough two semi finals where they preform their song and ten countries from each one goes trough to the actual final. In the final each country preforms their song again and a jury from each country hands out points from 1-12 to their favourite artists, then they add the television votes and the one with the highest score combined wins.
    Bonus fact:
    This voting system is very new and makes Alexander Rybak, the winner of 2009 still have the actual highest score from Eurovision, because if you were to convert the highest score after the change, his would still be the highest. This is why he’s known as the king or prince of Eurovision.
    This is the easiest way to explain Eurovision so I hope it wasn’t too confusing and too long.
