I love my daughter more than anything but you have to separate that relationship at times so your kids can develop their own identity. This is not healthy.

As someone whose wife had a similar relationship with their mom at the beginning of our relationship (We met in highschool so it wasn't that weird to me and it wasn't THIS extreme.) , I can confirm this takes a huge mental toll on the daughters. When she started to distance herself from her mother, she (mom) would spite me for it. Then as revenge she started being extremely abusive towards her.
She raised my wife to baby her, not to be an adult. Her phycologist said the same thing, so one could imagine who did all of the domestic leads and and who was silenced when they were feeling sad because the other cAnT dEal WitH iT. (SPOILER: it wasn't my mother in law). It's a very disturbing situation and worst of all is that the kids rarely notice it. I'm very happy with how my wife is recovering but the mental anguish that this shi causes is too much.

It’s a common result of a negligent parenting, where the principal caregiver does not allow the child to do things on their own or say things like “I’ll do it because you won’t do it right”, “You’ll take care of me when I’m older”, etc, or they give the impression to the child that they will die if their kids are not around. Then the mom/dad wants to be best friends with their children, so they behave like their children’s age. And the adults do it because that’s what they live on their own childhood or because they grew up with an absent parent. (Just an abstract, it’s a pretty complex topic). Hope this helps.🙌🏼

My mom was the opposite. She migrated from Jamaica at a young age to America, and like damn near every immigrant parent, she had very few expectations, shut up, get straight A's, and be obedient. I actually didn't mind the structure and how strict she was. Due to mental disability, I struggled with staying on task and timeliness, so my mom would sit with me every night and we would go over all my homework, I used to hate it since she'd always be like "Go bak to di mat seckshun Adam. Mi wan chek it wan moer time." every five minutes. My mom is the world to me, but if I dared pull any of this crap with showering with her even when I was a toddler, I remember shutting me down real quick. The mother has made her grown child SO dependant, she can't even feel comfortable letting other people in her mom's life when they say their closeness is unormal.
There's a type of disorder where children don't want to leave their parents at all, but they outgrow from it as they get older. How i see it, the mom didn't let Brittany grow out to be independent, and it obviously made her unready to be by herself.
