Verdi’s 'Anvil Chorus' from Il trovatore (The Royal Opera)

  • Even for those who have never set foot in an opera house, Verdi's 'Anvil Chorus' is likely to be a familiar tune. Its rousing tune and rhythmic percussion - including, frequently, anvils played on stage on and off the beat - makes it something of an archetype for a bold, cheery Italian chorus.

My parents bought me up listening to Opera and classical music and this is one of my favourite operas. I use to sit with my late Dad listening to this and I use to sing along with it not really knowing what they were singing I was only 7or 8 yrs old. I loved the anvil it was so loud and strong. I have bought my son up with music but I am not sure if he really shares my love of opera and classical music. As my Dad use to say to me this music will live forever. And if he was still alive he'd be watching this with me... Thank you for bringing back happy memories for me. Happy 2022 may you all be safe...

Everything you wrote applies exactly to me. My mum sang in a choir and il Trovatore was one of her favourites. My dad was great at whistling tunes. He loved the rigoletto more. My son does love this music too. He's 21.

I'm kinda the odd one out in my family. Everybody else listens to hip hop, rap music, trance etc but I'm all about the opera. I used to be into dance music in my teens but wouldn't touch it with a barge pole now. Opera helps me to relax, enriches my life, excites my mind and educates my ears. I much prefer sopranos over tenors as they can reach much higher notes which I like. I would say that Cecelia Bartoli and Anna Netrebko are my favorite singers of the opera but that Angela Gheorghiu also deserves a mention ...

You do realize Giuseppi Verde is sitting up in heaven, looking down on this production, and going "most excellent!" The production designers had SUCH fun with this one...an old caravan, a broken down car, John Waters' Divine, a weightlifter and a guy in a bear suit...can't beat it!

And back in 2004 I was in an amateur production of Gilbert and Sullivan's _Ruddigore_ that re-set the operetta in 1960's Carnaby Street--complete with a mural showing Gilbert and Sullivan in the yellow submarine with the Beatles.
