    Thanks so much for the comparison and your view on the Kindle Paperwhite. I was tempted, but ultimately stuck with my 2018 Paperwhite as I didn't see enough improvements to want me to upgrade. When they come out with a color eInk display though - then I'll reconsider :)

    I bought the Kindle 2021 (non-signature edition) per recommendations from you and other CZcams Channels and have not regretted it. It’s a wonderful device that has all the things I want in an e-reader. I agree that wireless charging and even the auto-brightness is just gimmicky. I wouldn’t use them. As for the storage I don’t have any audiobooks, manga, or comics. Just about 50 books downloaded and there’s plenty of space.
    Thank you telling me that around 2,500 books downloaded I might go over the 8 gig limit. I can’t imagine I would keep that many on the device and even if I did that’s what Amazon cloud is for.
    Great review! I simply adore your videos about the books you read and try to watch your new videos when I can.

      Did you pay to have the adverts removed ? Does your device also refresh for no reason like the signature model ? If your answer is “ yes “ to both these questions, then I’d rather stick on to my 7th gen paperwhite model, and buy a clip on blue light filter ( I wear glasses ), for night reading. As for extra space on the device, I just have to delete some old books - but we can also rely on Amazon cloud for more space. In my opinion, these new paper whites are not worth the money paid for them. I’m waiting for the model that will easily convert a book to the bionic font for rapid reading. The money I saved to get the new paperwhite will now be spent on that great bread machine I’ve been eyeing for a while !

    Excellent review of the Signature and your round up comments on the different kindles at the end. Thank you.
    I have a Paperwhite 7th edition plus an Oasis 9th ed 8gb. I have posted (at amazons cost) my Oasis to Amazon under there trade up offer. I will receive £60 for the Oasis together with 20% discount on a new Kindle. I did not use the Oasis much in fact it stayed at home, I preferred to take the 7th edition with me on my travels. it is smaller and fits very comfortably into jacket pocket or inside pocket. the Oasis I found would not fit into pockets easily. The battery on the 7 lasted much longer than the oasis.
    In conclusion the new 8gb Paperwhite will suit my needs perfectly, pocketable and I don't need the wireless charging or the auto back light function.
    I was leaning towards the Signature but your excellent comments made me realise that the entry level is the way to go, plus I can spend the money I will save on more ebooks.

    I want to buy one of these on Prime day tomorrow. I went to a local store to check them out. I love the way the Oasis feels in the hand. It is so balanced plus the buttons. However the Oasis screen had a lot of ghosting, like screen burn in, and the contrast didn't seem as good as the Paperwhite. The blacks on the Paperwhite looked darker while the Oasis screen looked washed out. They had them in some sort of demo mode so I couldn't play with brightness settings and the store lighting was
    very bright. Still not sure which to get.

    the battery life is absolutely incredible. even if you notice it's getting low, you can still read for a bit before it runs out, compared to phones or tablets where after it gets to 10% you have a little over an hour before it turns off, if you don't really use it. instead, if you want to read and you notice the battery is low, you can probably read normally until you're home or you can charge it for an hour. best thing ever

    Interesting. I don't know that I've noted the poor battery life with my Oasis. I'll have to pay more attention. Weirdly enough, I notice the tiny extra bit of screen size of the Oasis over the Paperwhite (.2") and it feels like a major deal for me. At the same time, I like the warmer hand-feel of the Paperwhite over the metal of the Oasis, although I live in Minnesota, so perhaps my Oasis just naturally colder much of the year!

The last Kindle I bought was a 4th edition purchased in either 2011 or 2012. For the last few years I have been reading eBooks using my iPad. It was your previous review that convinced me that I needed this iteration of the Kindle in my life! I ordered it for my birthday in April, so I've had it a couple months now and I love it! 📚 I love the screen size on the Paperwhite Signature, too! It's a big difference from my previous Kindle Paperwhite (2017? I think...) and it's much snappier. 😬 How odd that yours is randomly rebooting on you! Is it possibly getting software updates when that happens? I don't know if you've done this and I know you didn't ask for advice, 😆 but I would completely shut it down for a few minutes to see if that makes a difference. For me the Oasis wins hands down! Why? First and foremost, the ergonomic grip cannot be beat for ease of holding. It’s a pleasure to hold which is enhanced by the autorotate feature allowing you to change hands and still enjoy the ergonomic grip. And then there’s the page turn buttons 😊. Regarding battery life: I leave mine in airplane mode most of the time and it helps a lot. Though the truth is, I usually plug it in daily just like my phone so it’s not a big deal. For those who don’t like the “coldness” or slipperiness of the back, I’d suggest buying a kindle skin. It adds some grip but doesn’t increase weight like a case. When I take it out and about, I put it in a Kindle sleeve.

      @@CriminOllyBlog Yes, That is the intent, but it is a great idea for adults. It often goes on sale for less than the cost of a regular Paperwhite, and it has that fantastic warranty. That warranty is worth a bit of cash. The only difference between the models (of the standard paperwhite and the kid's paperwhite) is that the kid's version comes with a FEW pre-installed apps or discounts for some kid's books that Amazon wants to promote. AND they can be deleted.
      So for the EXACT SAME PRICE, you get a no-questions warranty on breakage for any reason, a case (the black one is very adult-looking).

    I love my Kindle Fire.

  • @ellagoreyshorrorstories7524

    I've owned several Kindle Fires. The first one died because something went weird with the power cord. The one I replaced that with got shattered and my poltergeist later decided to pick it up and try to break it in half. I wish I'd been able to get that on film or at least SEE it, because I heard it happening. I'd left it in a padded envelope on my bed, and I went to the bathroom, and I heard this "'pop pop pop" sound coming from my room. When I came back I found it on my bed, out of the envelope where I'd left it. It was bent and the casing was partially popped open, but no one was in the room at the time! I replaced it with another Kindle Fire. The first one got a shattered screen, which Amazon replaced. Then the replacement got a big scratch across the screen; I have no doubts it was the poltergeist that caused both, but I told Amazon it came out of the package that way! So they took it back and replaced it again. AMAZON'S CUSTOMER SERVICE IS FUCKING AMAZING. I've kept an eagle eye on my most recent, but it's still been bent (light leak and one pixel out!) and the poltergeist got hold of it and broke the power cord. It broke my headphones at the same time; funny enough, that's the last time the poltergeist came into my room. Now it just throws stuff at my bedroom door and writes me nasty messages--might even be a different poltergeist. Anyway, I love my Kindle Fire. I use it for reading, but also for watching CZcams and Netflix when I don't feel like setting up my laptop and want to watch something bigger than my phone! And one more time for those in the back, Amazon's customer service is BOMB. They are awesome!

Do you sometimes hold it with three fingers on the back and the kindle then resting on your little finger on the bottom. I've had the Signature Edition since launch, replacing my elderly Oasis and can only say good things about it. Unlike you, I use the wireless charging exclusively - I just plonk it on the wireless charger and pick it up later on, there's no fiddling with cords or plugs (even say that, USB-C is a huge leap over the old micro-USB plugs). In terms of hand-feel, I use one of the Kindle cases because it has the front flap that protects the screen when I chuck it in a bag etc. The case (cork) also gives me a bit more security in terms of holding the device. I've never once had mine spontaneously reboot - I'm wondering whether yours is down to a problem with your device. Another plus side to the latest Kindles is the speed of the processors - the Oasis I had before was almost unbearably slow in terms of navigating the interface where the Signature edition is so much more responsive.

    I always have a question regards PW5&PW5S: Will PW5S slowdown if it’s fully loaded? If I remember correctly, the signature-edition has the same RAM just like a regular KP5, so can it really handle that many files (like use more than 75% of the storages space, especially with e-books not audiobooks) on a device? It’s probably a dumb question but I’m just so curious.

    • @CriminOllyBlog
      @CriminOllyBlog  Před 2 lety +2

      I can't see that being a problem. If I understand how these things work correctly, then RAM is only used for active processes. So RAM usage would be identical regardless of how many books are on the device - as would just be the book you actually have open

    1. I actually wish it were smaller!
    2. Side buttons would be good (like the Nook).

    My problems are the random reboots, it takes multiple taps (2-3x) before an ebook downloads, no ePub book covers in the library, power button on the bottom, and frequent slowdowns when navigating through the UI. Another issue I have is the Paperwhite will download multiple copies of the same ebook. I don't understand why. I have the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. I love the last Kindle Oasis released, but the battery life is horrible. My Oasis drains in 1 day. I wish the Kindle Oasis had USB Type C, better battery life and a rubberized back for grip. It could have a 7.8" screen as well. I have over 6K ebooks on my Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition. 6,369 ebooks last check. I love horror books!!!

      I’ve not had the issue of multiple copies of a book being downloaded. Agree that having the power button at the bottom is a terrible design choice though.
      If they can fix the battery life I’d buy a 7.8” rubberised Oasis with USBC in a heartbeat!
      And I thought I had a lot of books!!!!

    • @CriminOllyBlog
      @CriminOllyBlog  Před 2 lety

      Hi there. Kindle Unlimited is a subscription service from Amazon that gives you access to free kindle books and audiobooks. The range is limited but there is a lot of good stuff there. You pay a monthly fee but can cancel anytime. You can also add it at any time, so if you’re not sure you want it I would select without for now.
      Lock Screen ads basically means that when your kindle is not being used Amazon will show ads for books it think you’ll like on the screen (just a static image). It’s not too intrusive but can be a bit annoying.

    I use my tablet if I have to read an ebook, but I prefer to read a physical copy. I had a kindle DX at one time, and it was terrible. I got the DX for my sister because of the large screen and text to voice, but it was too difficult for her to use because of her disability. So I ended up trying to use it, but the page turning was way too slow, and before long the battery would not hold a charge. I probably didn't read a complete book on it before disposing of it. $400 CAN wasted. Since I don't enjoy reading with the kindle app on my tablet, I assume a modern kindle would not be much better. A tablet or kindle would be great on the go, but in the summer I don't have a pocket big enough for my 8 in tablet. So I grab a pocket book when I am going somewhere. I did read ebooks on my phone for a while, but then it would take a year or more to read a book, since I would only read it when out somewhere and had to wait around.

      I think you’re the first person I know who owned a DX! I’ve always been intrigued by it because it seemed like a bit of a crazy device. I think you’d find page turns and so on much quicker on a newer kindle

      Current Kindles are much faster than the DX. Not sure what happened with your battery, but I still use an ereader from 2011 and the battery still lasts at least a week.
      Reading on a black and white eink screen is different than reading on a phone or tablet. Closer to a printed page. If you are in a store and see a Kindle or a Kobo, I'd suggest at least checking them out to see how they are.
