    Enjoyed the plowing action, Tony. The little 25hp was using every one of its 25 ponies and still it was a bit of a struggle to break that ground but your maneuvering made the plow do the right thing. I don't know squat about plowing but sure enjoyed watching your plowing action. Loved the blue pig action with Gizmo. Hey Tony, watching this it looked to me like a 25 hp was just fine. You were breaking traction and your first assessment of not enough weight is correct. The second thing to look at is those tires. Turf tires are the wrong thing for this tractor pulling a plow. If you would’ve had R1 tires, it would’ve been no problem.

    • @TonysTractorAdventure
      @TonysTractorAdventure  Před rokem +2

      They are not turf tires. It has R4 tires. R1 would do better, but It was running out of HP. I am not a big fan of R1 tires for most jobs. We transition between gravel, dirt and pavement to often for R1 tires. I plowed again today. I played around with fine tuning the plow and adding a load of dirt in the bucket. It was better, but this plow is a little much for the tractor.

It included traction booster function in which implements were automatically raised and lowered to keep traction constant and automatic delay for example to raise the rear cultivator later than the front cultivator. Every single implement of larger tractors was available, pickup plows, pickup discs, cultivators, belly mowers, brush hogs, sickle bars, flail mowers, rakes, balers, front end loader, grader blade, etc. If you wanted to be able to use implements of other vendors, there were ferguson/3pt hitch kits. hey Mr Tony, I have a Kubota b3300su, which is 33 hp, I’ve been looking at plows and everyone I have talked to says get a one row plow cause my tractors hydrostatic transmission can’t handle a two row plow, after watching your videos and yes I’ve subscribed cause your videos are awesome, should I get a one row or try a two row, my tires are filled and I have same tires as yours, and I also have 4wd, I’m really confused after watching your videos and a bunch of other videos that show guys pulling two row plows with subcompact tractors and having no problems, your advice and thoughts would be much appreciated sir and keep them videos coming, Ty.

      Hydrostatic transmission gets such a bad rap, but they are bulletproof nowadays. If you only have a small garden, then I would go with one 14". Your tractor should pull this double bottom plow with 12" cutters. There are to many variables for me to give you a solid answer.

    Hey Tony.. I had a double bottom plow for my 35hp Branson 3510.. depending on the ground, it usually did good, but sometimes it took two passes to get it deep.. Are the rear tires filled with fluid of any kind..? Drop some PSI in them as well.. softer ride and more traction. Yeah.. it was struggling.. but if setup to cut 8 to 10"... it would be maxxed out.. but could do it. MY biggest plow job once was 2 acres. It was a fuel burner.. and then I rototilled it afterwards.. rototilling is slow going. It should have been disced after plowing. but it's what the customer wanted

    It looks to me like you need to extend the right side lift arm down to level the plow side to side, and lengthen the third arm to level the plow front to back. Other than that if you had another 1000 pounds on the rear tires and R-1 tires you would have plenty of traction. Twenty five horse is plenty to pull a two bottom plow, but a gear drive transmission would work better for plowing.

    Great video as usual……. So what size tractor do you think a beginner homesteader should get? 25 or bigger?

    • @theElderberryFarmer
      @theElderberryFarmer Před rokem

      It really depends on what you plan to do with your tractor.
      Your planned tasks will dictate what implements you need, and PTO driven implements will have a minimum PTO horsepower requirement to run them. That's going to factor into how much HP you need from a tractor. Your task size will also drive implement selection. For example, if you have 20 acres of fields that you want to mow periodically, it will take WAY longer to get the job done with a 4-foot wide mower (flail or rotary) than it will with a 6-foot mower. A 6 foot mower is going to require a bigger tractor to pull it than a 4-foot mower will. A 12-foot batwing mower is going to require a larger tractor still, but will get the job done in 1/2 the time compared to a 6-foot mower.
      A good tractor dealer can help you pick the right size. If the sales guy isn't asking you these sorts of questions (what tasks, how big, how often, how much time do you want to spend), he may not be the right dealer for you.
      Take care and God Bless.

      @@theElderberryFarmer thank you so much for your response……I want to bush hog, plow a garden, start milling, clean out chicken pens, and build a shooting range… I assume a 25 horse will do most of that. I’m wondering if the milling might require a larger tractor with more lifting capacity? I have looked at several that have a backhoe attached, I’m strongly inclined towards one like that. Or am I wasting money?

    • @theElderberryFarmer
      @theElderberryFarmer Před rokem

      @@BadJuJuAdventures1701 It's good that you have started to list out what you want to use your tractor to do. That should help you come to the right decision about how much tractor you need to buy.
      The backhoe is a tough call. I chose not to get that because I didn't think I would be using it enough to justify tying up $6k or more in one implement. I figure I can rent a mini excavator many times for that amount of money, and not have a large implement to store and maintain.
      When it comes to building a shooting range - you will find that a tractor is better at moving dirt than digging dirt. You can't really use the bucket to dig the way that you can with a skid steer. I've found that I have better success in doing dirt work by first using either a disc harrow or a tiller to break up the dirt, then use the bucket and front end loader to scoop and/or push the loose dirt. It works ok, but is much slower than using a skid steer.
      I ended up getting a 50 hp tractor for my 21 acre homestead. I cut about 7 acres of fields every couple of weeks with a 6' rotary cutter, and I've tilled up about 3/4 acres of garden and orchard space. I used a disc harrow to break up dirt/topsoil for a 400' driveway, scooped it out with the bucket, and used a box blade and a landscape rake to spread the gravel. I've used pallet forks to move branches and tree trunks around after doing some selective tree removal.
      My tractor is a Kioti DK5310SE with a hydrostatic transmission and a cab. I've been happy that I did not get a smaller tractor - but again, your situation is almost certainly different than mine. You may be completely satisfied with a 25 hp tractor. I might have been able to get by with a 25 hp tractor, but everything I do would take longer. Since I'm not getting any younger (or more patient LOL), I decided that my time was worth more to me than saving the money by buying a smaller tractor.
      Take care and God Bless.

    • @TonysTractorAdventure
      @TonysTractorAdventure  Před rokem +1

      It boils down to three things. How much will you need to lift. How fast do you want to get done, and how much money do you want to spend. Make a list of what you will be doing. Make a list of implements you will need. The size of the implement will dictate how fast your job goes. Make a list of the tractors that will pull your implement needs me. Buy the right tractor. Buying the tractor should be the last part of the plan, but the first thing you buy.

    I agree with you, that tractor is too small for that job. Will it do it once? Maybe twice? what about long term? the biggest problem i see is not horsepower but weight. I don't know if those tires have water in them but if they don't perhaps some wheel weights might help. My ford 3930 will bury all three blades and mold boards on my ford 3 point plow without even slowing down. Another point, you don't have enough pull to break the shear pins in the plow. If I hit a large root the tractor doesn't bog down but i will break a shear pin. I've always heard that rule of thumb is that it takes 10 horsepower per plow point. However, traction is a major factor with smaller tractors and that is a function of weight.

    Reading either the Ford or the Ferguson plow book would help you a lot. Can’t tell in the video, but you shouldn’t be using your stabilizers. The plow will track properly behind the tractor when set up properly. The beams should be level with the ground for and aft and left to right when the plow is at depth. The wheels on your tractor need to be spaced properly also. There’s a lot to know, so do your self a favor and read up on it because the plows pull much easier when set up properly. That plow is a Ford 101 plow and is probably supposed to have a rolling landslide on the rear bottom. By the way your plow doesn’t have 16” bottoms they aren’t even 14” that plows beams are spaced for 2-12” bottoms, and an 8n ford will walk off with those plows.

    Actually you're about the same horsepower as an 8n Ford and they could do 2-12s, looks like you're doing 2-14s, it appears your weight is fine for 25HP, no need for any fluid in tires!

      This has 2 16" plows. We had 9N and two 8Ns growing up. They couldn't pull through this soil with 32" of plow on their best day. They are great tractors, but soil type matters.

    Probably would do better with 14" bottoms instead of those 16".

    Could have got you a bucket full of dirt for a little extra weight

    If you would take the front loader off, you would gain a horse or two.

      That makes no sense to me. What is your thinking?

      @@TonysTractorAdventure taking off the 900lb fel unit will make it feel like it gained a couple horses. Then loaded the rear tires would fix your lack of traction.

      Taking the fel off will also transfer the weight from the front to your rear wheels. Which will give you more traction. Please try it and post a video on your channel.

      I agree with your logic for the most part. I don't think it will gain HP, but it would redistribute the load. I did another plow video this morning. I wished I had read your comments before. I will try it this fall.

      Hey, Thank you for your opinion. I like the little tractor for what it is, as do 99% of the owners. I would bet you have never used one, so we will all take your comment with that in mind. Enjoy your cat.

      Not really sure what your comment meant. Did you mean correctly? if you meant correctly, I believe I mentioned that it wasn't set up correctly in the video. It's hard to figure out a new plow in the garden. You're done before you really get it set up.
