BRICS countries are not aligned ideologically, and therefore cannot be a military alliance. NATO is primarily a military alliance. I think a better comparison is BRICS vs the EU vs NFTA.

BRICS is a economic development forum like the G7 and G20, whereas NATO is a military alliance which was introduced to halt soviet influence around the North Atlantic region.

Most people say that NATO and BRICS must not be compared because one is about military and the other about economy. Nevertheless, it is also recognised by some that the war is the extension of economy by other ways. And other would also qualify the economy has being ar the service of the military. So those 2 fields can not be separated and it can also be considered that the announced aspect of those alliances actually hides the other aspect.
Military alliance VS Economic alliance. One start wars and chaos with more threats, another one creat jobs and build wealth with more opportunities.

As tech grows it becomes scary, smaller countries that do not realize what would happen if they fired one off at another country are more likely to start a catastrophic event. Example, N Korea develops a Nuclear warhead to fit on an ICBM and fires it "over" japan to deter US but miscalculates and strikes the country, USA with no option once nuclear arms are in the air eradicates N Korea with the push of a button, China getting nuclear fallout in their country fires nucs and so on an so on. This is something the Large superpowers with thousands of scientists understand and is a reason why we do not want smaller countries to have nuclear weapons, seems unfair I know but the realization is that nuclear warfare will end this planet. period.

BRICS is definitely more of a economic alliance, since things between China and India and Russia and India are a little tense. BRICS isnt something I think we would see going into a military alliance against something like NATO because of the above mentioned tensions.
