All depends on the person's decision... i was a company driver for one year two months and became an owner operator, but my friend who had a semi and a tow truck, who has never driven a trailer had his CDL on Friday and started as an owner operator on Monday, I convinced him to have a bit of training and he never listened....he has been an owner operator for almost a year and he's doing great 👍... people are not the same... where you face challenges is where another person looks it so simple...

I’m almost a year in with a megacarrier and I’m based in the southwest USA. I run the Western 11 states and the Midwest, in the USA. I have a few thoughts.
There’s just so much to learn in the first year that no academy, no matter how good, can teach you. Things like finding parking for your 10s, how to work with your company to deal with breakdowns, how to navigate customer relationships, being well-prepared to ace an inspection, dealing with a shady shipper who might try to illegally overload you, running a reefer trailer and food safety, and so on.
My training experience was pretty good and I trained through the same company that I work for now. I had the full 4-week training, with no corners cut. However, I still struggled with backing and tight-quarters maneuvering, and I needed the time with a company mentor to really get to where I had an ok-ish understanding of backing to upgrade to being a solo truck driver.
From there, my focus as a new driver is not necessarily on getting a crap-ton of miles and making the most money but on establishing a safety record. Experienced drivers often are skeptical of new drivers, and have good reason to be, because many will give up on the lifestyle of professional over-the-road driving and tragically, many others will make mistakes and have preventable accidents.
So it is up to me as a new driver to prove my worth. I’m now going into my 9th month with my company, with no accidents or incidents, with a consistent track record of getting loads delivered on time, and with an accident-free and incident-free safety record that I can be proud of. My goal is to continue to prove my worth so that I can look people in the eye and say “yes I’ve proved that I’m a safe driver in all types of terrain and tight spaces and weather, and here’s my safety record”.
That is what new drivers need to do.

When I went back to trucking after twenty years of other jobs, I bought a truck off an owner-op at a small local company that came with a local job. The truck was paid for and since I was a mechanic,I refurbish the old '86 LTL 9000 and did a couple of runs each day, oakville to toronto and back. I would fuel up once a week and be home by 4pm every day.Jobs like this are extremly rare and for the time it lasted, I made out like a bandit. Six months later, the boss drops the contract and wants me to run the midwest. In a 9yr old truck and no experience, I said no thanks and left his employ (he did buy my truck and I even made a little on it) You need experience and time before you attempt a $170,000 nut to carry. Your advise was proper in my opinion.

I don't know how things work in Canada, but in the United States, all of the mega carriers offer training, they also push lease purchases. They tell new drivers how much money they will make if they just sign on the dotted line. Isn't that the same thing as a new driver, not knowing anything trying to buy a truck? But you're trying to discourage them, but here it's all part of the business model of most large trucking companies?

    • @NorthAmerican-Trucking-News

Mega Carriers in Canada also offer training. Ronen isn't trying to discourage drivers. He wants all drivers to be successful and not cut corners. WELL F#@KING said, we use to hire guys that hadto have a minimum of 4yrs under their belts, even highway drivers with experience would have to be tested as the oil patch was a different beast and in the winter truly dangerous. When I gave a guy a pail of chains and said these will be your best friend on lease roads or doing heavy haul through B.C. or on lease sites and they responded that they don't need chains or won't use them I usually knew they were green and I'd wish them luck, take my pail of chains back and send them on their merry way. Who knows Ronen maybe I'll come a knockin on your door for a highway job.

As much as he is eager to get on the road, and I would bet many newly licensed drivers are, I agree that he needs to get some seat time before jumping right into owner operator. The timing as well is not good either, like you mentioned, with winter approaching. I have been researching and considering becoming a driver, going to a certified trucking school in Ontario, then getting on with a company that offers an internship before I go solo. I would also time my training so that I would start driving in the spring/summer to give me lots of hours driving in good weather conditions. Becoming an owner operator would be a goal but not a starting point for me. I am a confident driver with 35+ years driving experience and have driven all over Canada and the US but I still wouldn’t rush the process. I know I would be a great truck driver but I would want to confirm that with some experience first in the truck. Great video.

I've been driving for 2-3 years now and by no means am I an expert driver. All the points you made are valid and refreshing. Your honesty had me floored tbh. But definitely 5-10 years into the gig someone can/should look into being an O/OP. No sooner. This is too dangerous and costly for a brand new driver to buy a truck out right.

I got a truck after 11 months exp I think. Now I have been been an owner operator for years.
I think a few months exp exp is enough if you have a strong financial situation. The learning curve plateaus very fast. If you own a truck.. the only difference is now you have to drop it at a shop for maintenance or repair.. everything else is the same as your role I'd you were to work as a driver except dispatch can push you less and you earn way more.
3-4 months exp you should have. Also have 10-15k cash on hand at least for repairs. Other than that it's easy and anyone should do it :D
