I didn't even know that Gavin MacLeod had passed away. I liked him to his two roles of news writer Murray Slaughter on the Mary Tyler Moore show and Captain Stubing on The Love Boat. It is nice to know that he wrote his own autobiography "This Is Your Captain Speaking" a few years ago.
I worked as a Musical Director for princess cruises for eight years from 84-92 and it was a blast. One of my great disappointments was I never got to meet Gavin MacLeod who would come aboard the ships on occasion. Our paths never crossed unfortunately.

My favorite Gavin MacLeod role was "Moriarty" the chronic, complaining tank mechanic in "Kelly's Heroes". Gavin and Donald Sutherland had hilarious interaction as "Oddball and Moriarty", always with the "negative waves". Gavin was okay as PT crewman "Happy" in McHales Navy, but was frustrated and (almost) invisible in such a large cast. He quit to seek new acting opportunities. Great actor.
