The blocked off areas at the mall are where they filmed.
It is interesting that some locations they have allowed to be significantly changed (Melvalds and the police station). Clearly they are finished using these locations. But others (the mall and the school) are being preserved unchanged. They apparently plan to use them again. At the school in Stockbridge, they recently re-erected the "middle school student drop-off" sign, which was seen in the first episode. So, clearly, they are going back to the school.

Huh, that completely makes me re-think what I saw in Atlanta. They're also filming a big portion in New Mexico, but it's great that I got to see what the mall and the school looked like while they were using it for season 4. I say that because they started filming a little before the pandemic happened, and they're still waiting to continue the damn thing. Thanks for the Byers location, too!

    • @markmccain468
      @markmccain468 Před 3 lety +17

If you google the address for the Byers house, it is now listed for sale (at went on the market very recently). That area is growing rapidly, so it will probably be bought by a developer, who will tear it down.

I was at the school area back on Sunday May 9th 2021 and it had ALL SORTS of prop stuff on the grounds like military tents and Hawkins news vans and Hawkins school busses and a Hawkins ambulance parked..i think i saw a Hawkins blood & trauma mobile center or something. So in season 4 something HUGE happens at the school. Like it might become a triage center or something. They also repainted the spot where it said " Hawkins middle school" and it now says "Hawkins high school" and its painted differently. Like more elaborate. It was pretty cool.

One thing I can say about my home state of Georgia, there's locations everywhere that represents every decade of the 20th and 21st centuries. Midtown Atlanta and Buckhead are modern. Downtown is kinda like inner city scratch. Jackson, Ga is what we call small time country town. Same with Douglasville. Gwinnett County has everything city, suburbs, towns, and upper class, and country. Gwinnett Place Mall has been a dead mall for years. That's why they chose to film there. Idk why people think it's a regular operating mall. It's was a dying mall even before they found a girl's dead body behind one of the restaurants in the food court. Tucker, Ga is where the van flip scene was filmed. Pretty much an old school 80s-ish suburban neighborhood. A lot of older people live there. And everything else was self explanatory.
The film industry here is the largest outside of Hollywood, Ca and NY City.
    Filmed in Georgia:
    Stranger Things.
    The Walking Dead.
    Ozark.
    Vampire Diaries.
    Avengers: Infinity War.
    Avengers: Endgame.
    Black Panther.
Spiderman.... Basically most the Marvel movies.
    Baby Driver.
Friday the 13th part 6: Jason Lives.
    Forrest Gump.
    Fried Green Tomatoes.
    Zombieland.
    Cape Fear.
    And many more.
It's easy to see why Ray Charles sung "Georgia on My Mind."

Gwinnett Place WAS a dying mall (county/city purchased it recently). It was one of the largest malls, but Sugarloaf (formerly Discover) and Mall of Georgia in Buford ate into the market. Now it’s just a Korean grocery store left, and the rest of the mall has been closed off. They were using it as a testing site for… well, you know.
The actors said it was sketchy when they filmed there too, as if it has something ominous about it.
I had visited it back in late 2017 in like October or November with my now ex gf. We entered the mall at about 8 PM and it was dark (not sure if it’s because they closed at that time or what), like suspiciously dark as if they forgot to pay the light bill… couldn’t see 10 ft in front of you. She complained that we should go home because she didn’t feel right about it, so we did.
I ended up coming across a news piece in January or February 2018 where they had found a homicide victim in the food court at Subway, and the dude that did it fled to NY. Kinda creepy because of the timeframe and the circumstances.

i've lived near Gwinnett Place mall from 2014-17. around 2014-2015 the mall was active, at least more than it is now. every space inside had a store except for maybe 2 and it was a good mall. never really understood as to why it even had a decline in the first place. but judging on the comment above mine, i would assume that sugarloaf mills is the leading reason as to why it started to die. been there myself and it most certainly had better interior and more interesting stores. airsoft area, detective game area, an entire area dedicated to bass pro fishing, movie theatre that was actually very good, a medieval showcase area (not too sure what it is i havent been inside of it). my only reason i would go to sugarloaf was that it had a gamestop, something that gwinnett place lacked. last time i've been to the dying mall was 2018. there was a festival in the parking lots nearby, caught a glimpse of the mall and there wasnt even that many cars to begin with, this was around the busiest times it would normally have when i remembered it. apparently the mall closed down in 2021. not even stranger things filming there could save the malls death

Another place you can visit is the Peachtree Mall in Columbus GA, it's a lot more open, more stores and much more space within the mall, but shootings happen at the mall pretty often. You can probably visit it but it doesn't resemble Starcourt Mall much, still a pretty good mall to compare Starcourt to :)

Living in Atlanta I have been on a bunch of movie sets including Avengers Infinity War and Fast and Furious. I can tell you that they will fix an abandoned building up for filming then remove everything they added after they are done filming at that location. An Avengers scene was shot on a downtown street and the film crew put up fake store exteriors down the entire street on top of existing businesses. I had to go through one of the fake facades to go to a corner store I shopped at.

Good job on this film, young man. I live on the NW outskirts of Atlanta, so the town names are familiar to me. Yes! You need to be very careful going into particular parts of the city. Very sketchy. To me these days, malls are just depressing in general. But thanks for the nice quiet ride showing different parts of the show's recording areas. I enjoyed your film.
