  • Let's make a glass gray palette! I'll show you how to do this, it's very easy. Benefits of a gray palette:
    • On a gray palette your colors look way better and It's easier to judge them. On a white palette your perception gets tricked, because it's too bright and every color looks way too dark on it.
    • You can make it in a size you prefer
    • Glass is easy to clean

    I like the idea of having the painted paper under the clear glass. Being able to stick the reference photo under the mixing surface is an awesome idea! Thanks! And it led me to the idea that I wouldn't be limited to just a neutral gray paper under the glass. I'm thinking that if I toned my canvas with, say a yellow ochre, I could stick a painted paper under the glass that would match that color. Could be helpful if I'm doing a drybrush scumbling technique where that undercolor may peek through. Thanks! You've inspired me!

      And that's a thing that I never thought about, good idea! There was a time that I had to make two paintings on very bright blue canvases, it was very confusing and hard to mix colors, this might have helped!😂👍👍👍

    I use a glass cutting board for my pallet, no sharp edges. 🎨

    Taping the back also protects the painted side from scratches and chipping. How do I know this?

    • @toon-nagtegaal

      🤣🤣🤣 But... let's say you didn't tape it on purpose to scientifically examine scratchmarkpatterns in painted surfaces, only very intelligent people do these kind of things!!!

    Hello! Thank you for your fun videos. I have a question. Which black is best to use to make that gray for the palette? I have Mars Black, Ivory Black and Lamp Black. I have not found a regular Black color. I am using Windsor & Newton paint.

    • @toon-nagtegaal
      @toon-nagtegaal  Před 5 měsíci +1

      That's a good question! Every black pigment has it's own characteristics. In this case you could use either Mars or Ivory black. Mars black is rather neutral to slightly cool and Ivory black is rather neutral as well, but has a slightly warm bias. These differences in temperature don't matter that much in the end, most important thing is that a kind of middle gray palette is way better than white.
      By the way: Ivory has a low tinting strength and Mars has a high tinting strength. So with the Mars black, gradually add small amounts to the gesso, because it changes the white gesso rapidly.
      Good luck with creating the palette, it's sure to turn out great!

    Again, an informative video. How come you get to have a studio with all that room, huh? And, you don't have family members bothering you....oh, sorry,...I meant, family members checking up on you because they miss you and cannot seem to get along without talking to you every few minutes! Do a video on setting some boundaries.....I dare You! Just (sorta) kidding Toon
