Esther El Hayani no ,couscous is actually Algerian & got spread in all north Africa , Algeria has the biggest variety of couscous , like twice that of Tunisia & Morocco combined
The only reason Moroccan cuisine is famous is due to the fact that Morocco is a touristic destination , unlike Algeria . but surely Morocco has been influenced heavenly by Algeria especially the north east of Morocco , many Algerian dishes are served in north east Morocco & they date back to the ottoman era in Algeria , well needless to say Morocco was not part of the ottoman empire , they got influenced by Algeria .

    Good evening,
I'm an algerian-french (algerian born french), muslim culturally and I've discovered your very interesting documentary about algerian-israelian people in Israel.
Surprinsigly, my mother told me that her grand-grand mother was a jewish algerian converted to islam.
I don't deny the fact and I am quite proud of being a kind of alien «Sunny muslim of jewish sepharadic roots».
In fact, I understand the fear of the people because I would like to discover one day Israel but I'm really scared of israelian customs and of the civilians.
I just hope that one we, as human beings, could go further that this «hate» and begin to learn from each other.

At the end of French rule in Algeria in 1962, the Jewish community (perhaps 100,000, out of the 1 million French citizens (pieds noirs) who left the country on independence) nearly all moved to France, adding to the French Jewish population. Very few of them moved to Israel. Algerian Jews were French citizens and spoke and were educated in French. Some moved on to Israel but broadly Algeria is the one Middle Eastern country from where the Jews did not move to Israel in the 1949-65 period (the era of granting independence by the European Empires). Finding people in Israel who are from Jewish families who lived in Algeria until 1962 is not easy as their numbers are low.

Most people who hate Zionism don't know what it is for example it has nothing to do with hating Arabs but it has to do with things like reviving the ancient Hebrew language and with celebrating. There are barely no more Jews in most Arab countries so being anti-Zionist is to be against them. Against the current home of almost all Yemenite Jews, Algerian Jews and Ethiopian Jews but a lot of people mistakenly want to believe that Zionism has anything to do with European colonialism.

Even though I am Jewish he treats me like a son and he's one of the nicest, kindest, smartest people I know but he did receive an education of hatred and stereotypes about the Jews and he still has difficulty differentiating the rich in power in Algeria with the Jews probably because the despotic rich people in power use the old trick of anti-Semitism in order for the bulk of society to take their frustrations on "the Jews" or "the Zionists"

So which ethnic group from Algeria are we talking about ? Also, You can not say "do you speak Algerian " because there is no such thing as "algerian language " ! There are many Algerian languages! Algerian has two official language : Tamazight (Berber) and Arabic ( the version that no one speaks in Algeria ) . ņиʞɔноuʁ ņоʚоɓоdоɹ
re "Ashkenazim, have been described as viewing themselves as superior to Sephardim and other Jews of colour generally. They are accused of maintaining an elite position in Israeli society, with some describing the attitudes of Ashkenazim as racist or of being a manifestation of racism. Other authorities describe the discrimination by Ashkenazi as class-based, not race-based.For example, the differences between (Mizrahi) Sephardic Jews (N. Africans, Middle Easterners, Yemenites, etc.) are referred to as Adatiyut caste-differences"
The author of the article you are copying/pasting from offers no fact-based evidence in the above paragraph and commits at the outset clear errors in fact (e.g., referring to Sefaradim as "Jews of colour" WTF is that even supposed to mean!?). The word "adatiyut" is deliberately mistranslated as "caste differences" when in fact "edah" in the Israeli-Jewish context means the Diaspora community that a Jewish citizen of Israel can trace ancestry to and the customs associated with that community. "Caste," on the other hand, refers to socieconomic, racial, ethnic and class barriers that are practically insurmountable. Clearly, in Israel of 2016, where so many Israeli Jews are the product of "intermarriages" (not even a good word to use since Jews are in essence one national community) of different "edoth" the word "caste" to describe some of the divisions in Israeli-Jewish society is hilariously inapplicable. It might be more accurate to use "caste" to describe the "edah" differences that exist within Israeli-Arab society, however (or as some now insist on calling it , "Israeli-Palestinian" society). Israeli Arab Druze, Muslims, and Christians and Bedouin rarely marry across communal/religious lines (with the possible exception of Christian-Arab women who marry Arab-Muslim men, to the consternation of the Christian-Arab communities in Israel).
"Israeli society in general - and Ashkenazi Jews in particular - have been described as holding discriminatory attitudes towards Jews of Middle Eastern and North African descent, known as Mizrahi Jews, Sephardic Jews, and Oriental Jews."
Described by people who have an axe to grind against Israel. To the extent this existed, it is largely a thing of the past, a relic of the 1950s that only vociferous critics hell-bent on defaming Israel bring up incessantly.
"A variety of Mizrahi critics of Israeli policy have cited "past ill-treatment, including the maabarot, the squalid tent cities into which Mizrahim were placed upon arrival in Israel; the humiliation of Moroccan and other Mizrahi Jews when Israeli immigration authorities shaved their heads and sprayed their bodies with the pesticide DDT"
Overlooking the fact that Ashkenazi immigrants in the early years of the state were also sent to the maabarot camps, Ashkenazi immigrants were also sprayed with pesticide (and so were British army recruits). People were afraid of lice then and DDT was viewed as an effective deterrent. Now people know better. It had nothing to do with humiliating Jewish immigrants to Israel because they came from Morocco. My aunt, who came from a Mizrahi/Sefaradi family resident for many generations in Jerusalem, was a nurse in the 1950s/1960s and worked in maabarot clinics. She administered DDT, of course, not only to North African Jewish children, but to Ashkenazi immigrant children from Romania, Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
      "the socialist elite's enforced secularization"
This is a valid criticism, but again, it was an example of an ideological elite that wanted to impose its own particular view of secular/socialist Zionism on a new immigrant class and remake them in its own image than it was an example of trying to stamp out Mizrahi/Sefaradi culture because it wasn't Ashkenazi. The Labour Zionists also attempted to remold Ashkenazi orphan children from ultra-Orthodox backgrounds into secular kibbutzniks (even going back to the years before the state).
"the destruction of traditional family structure, and the reduced status of the patriarch by years of poverty and sporadic unemployment"
These phenomena are often a byproduct of immigration to a new society even in the best of circumstances; moving to Israel, a poor country beset by war in the 1950s, was not without its share of hardships that had a negative social impact on many. But there is no doubt that Israel was a better place to be a Jew than someplace like Algeria, Iraq, Morocco, Yemen and Egypt *then and now*. There's a reason that Israeli Jews whose families used to live in places like that are overall fervently Zionist and love Israel. The descendants of that aliyah flourish and thrive in Israel.

    • @mustapha1403
      @mustapha1403 Před 8 lety +5

Yes, some damage would be caused to Jews, especially if they were colons who took land and fought along with France, this damage though would be done mostly by thieves who will make it look like the motives were revolutionary or hate crimes against Judaism, Howevrr the state won't allow itself to treat Jews or Christians as 2nd class citizens. While Jews who were originally Algerian didn't feel the need to flee, because they fought for the county that we share, a lot of them stayed, same in Morocco too , yet if Algerian Muslims themselves are fleeing to Europe, wouldn't you expect Jews to do so too.
Israel is a Jewish state, so its priority is to do what is the best for Jews as a priority then the rest comes after, Israel is obsessed with the lust for that the state turns to 100 Jewish, it explains why there were protests againt bringing in refugees, and trying to get rid of Muslims as well who form a good part of Israeli society

They preferred France purely for economic reasons ... the Algerian FLN (that started the revolution and ruled Algeria after independence ) had invited Jews to be part of New Algeria but they refused......very little Algerian Jews Emigrated then to Israel.. most have chosen France.
In Morocco the State of Israel offered huge amount of money to the kingdom of Morocco to facilitate their emigration to Israel.... most were poor and Israel represented new economic opportunity for them.

Okay I am late to comment on this video but these people are right to forget about Algeria and continue their life. There is a difficult history between Algeria and Jews and it has nothing to do with the religion itself or Palestine. There were thousands of Jews living here for centuries. They used to be the richest and the most influential on the society. When France invaded Algeria, the Jews BETRAYED the Algerians with whom they lived their whole life and sided with France. At the time of war of independence, the front of liberation FLN gave the Algerian Jews a choice, either they stand by Algerians and fight with them and continue to live with us and we forget about their treachery or they stand against us and leave the country if they lose. Not only they sided with France, but they were part of the terrorist organization that killed both Algerians and French people. We can never forget what happened and history cannot be changed. You made a choice, you paid for it. Period.
