  • A wonderful AC-DC set from Old Blighty. A three hour round trip saw me secure this beautiful little radio in front of hordes of other people. It has FM which is difficult to find in a valve radio in Oz. Join me as I attempt to breathe new life into this forgotten gem.

      You'll hear different ages mentioned as being best for PCA screening. My urologist was quite frank with me... You should start PCA testing once you hit forty and include it in an annual blood screening which should also test your liver / kidney function and general blood chemistry. Don't wait... it's a simple matter of drawing blood to be tested. I do this once a year...no problem at all.

    Hi Dave,
    I read comments that state it is a good job you caught it early: I too will ditto that. I will add, get checked over as regular as possible, which I know you will my friend.
    Now onto the Bush radio. Older radios and televisions were given to apprentices to repair. Starting from 1971 through to 1976 I repaired a significant number of them.
    For some odd reason, certain mid to late 1950s models produced by Bush, Ekco, Pye, Murphy, GEC, Thorn EMI, Regentone etc. incorporated wire wound resistors on the underside of the chassis. As you know, heat is one of the chief causes for hastening the demise of components. As a consequence the underside of chassis could become very warm. It was not the best of design ideas, especially on small compact valve radios like the Bush radio you brilliantly repaired.
    Cheers my friend, Phil.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  Pƙed 3 lety

      Hi Phil, I agree, vigilance is the key.
      I believe this Bush radio design originally had a high heat resistor mounted underneath but was moved topside in later production. As an apprentice myself I was given all the menial jobs but sometimes the tradesman would do the menial job and let me do something more important under his watchful eye. Something I carried over in my career.
      Thanks Phil, take care 🙂

    As far as dial lights go, I have found that when I cannot locate the proper voltage, I often resort to either clear or amber LED'S. Simply calculate the resistor value and solder them into the circuit. I have several radios in my collection that now depend on the LED system replacement and look very close to the original, or at least how I imagine the original to have looked. You can do a lot with todays modern LED'S in different colors and powers. I really do enjoy your videos and am happy to see you came out on top of the cancer. I am fighting that myself now, just lost my right kidney to the damn illness but the left seems to be keeping up with the work. I have had to give up a few meds that are hard on the kidneys and have a lot more pain that way but nothing I cannot handle.

      Hi Jerry, yes I have used LEDs in the past for dial lights I managed to get some in the 3000K range to more closely mimic the original lamp output. LEDs tend to be more focused than globes radiating light over about 270 degrees where LEDs are about 70 degrees max. I don't remember why I didn't use LEDs in this radio, it might have been a good option. Glad to hear you are recovering well Jerry 👍😊

    Hi Dave, sorry to hear about the cancer. I recommend researching every treatment method used by the medical people so you know what to expect (recovery period, resulting disabilities, and so on). The medical profession tends to give the impression they have all the answers but, there are several other ways to be treated. If possible, please keep us updated with your progress.
    That Bush radio is quite interesting and it cleaned up very nicely. I have never come across a table radio with 6 poles of IF filtering (the average radio has 4 poles) which, should make for improved selectivity, most noticable when trying to receive a weak station adjacent to a strong station.
    That grounding problem on the tuning capacitor is a guaranteed failure, where the connection is through a piece of hardware. I would recommend using a wire (ideally copper braid) soldered from the tuning capacitor frame to the chassis, without going through any terminal lugs. In like manner, I have never seen a bulk filter capacitor that gets its can ground from a mounting bracket; another failure waiting to happen.
    I wish you all the best Dave and my prayers are with you.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  Pƙed 3 lety +1

      Thanks Bill. I will update on progress but it's not about me, I was concerned about getting the message across to us bulletproof men. A soldered jumper would have been better on reflection although I think the chassis is aluminium and we aren't allowed to solder ground connections for the mains supply lead as they say the solder can fail and it needs to be a mechanical join. Yours is a good suggestion though as with the filter caps. Thanks Bill 🙂

    I love your videos, I've been hooked on radio restoration since I was a kid but can't do it now due eyes, so these are almost as good as. And I think that this particular set was the first radio I ever repaired around forty years ago - a friend of the family gave it to my parents for me to play with, I had no idea what I was doing, but I learned - parents, don't give your kid a hot chassis set as a toy. Wemt to the library, found some radio books, eventually found an open circuit inductor that I soldered better with a screwdriver heated in the kitchen gas ring. The first time I scraped a screwdriver across the FM aerial inputs and heard a crackle from the speaker - a moment I'll never forget.
    So really delighted to see this restoration. Really pissed to hear your news. Can you get your doc to do a rstoration video on you in the same style?

    Hi David, I'm feeling sad for your health issues: I too have had TURP 2 years ago for an awfully enlarged prostate. We have to be careful and stay away from wine and spicy foods. Up to more cheerful subjects, I have a VHF 70 in my collection, which is quite the same radio, same schematics. It was a gift in times when I was single, quite some time ago! Its main fault, that I still have to fix, is a leaky valve socket in the IF, making the AVC inoperative in AM (the 70 model has LW as well as MW). And yes, the dial lamps are dim too, though not AS dim !
