    My kicker core failed after 1 1/2 years. I could hear a ball bearing rolling around in the housing. WAHOO did replace it at no cost. They sent me a refurbished unit very quickly and at at no charge. Including a label for mailing it (old broken unit)back in at no charge. Which was nice. I used it a lot during the winter months , maybe 6 hours a week…. Not so much during the summer months, 3-4 hours a week. I was just surprised it didn’t last longer for $1,000!
    So, dont worry about which one is the loudest. Get the one that will last. I don’t know which one that is.

    Hi Ray. thanks a million for a great video - and all your stuff in general!
    What about deep rumble sounds/vibrations - how do these trainers behave in that regard?
    I live in an old flat with wooden floors, and have had to build a vibration dampening base for my kickr '15, to be able to maintain a good relationship with the folks below me :-) It basically sets the flor in motion (without the base). I tried a Neo gen.1 and that made even more vibrations. I assume, when using a trainer on a concrete floor, this won't be a problem, but are there indications of vibrations on the rocker plate, that you are using? Also, it would be very helpful for people with the same problem as me, if you could test the trainers on a stage or some kind of "resonance box" to get an impression of vibrations.

    Thanks man for the video - I'm new to smart trainers and I got little confused about Kickr and Kickr core. 2017 Kickr is at $900 now , same as Kickr Core 2018. Since 2017 Kickr is loud and it is basically 2018 Kicker Core without folding legs + 2018 core is pretty quiet I think it makes sense to go for 2018 core ......

    I’ve owned a Tacx Neo Smart for 4 years. Recently the EDCO hub failed (been failing for over a year or so). Bought a replacement hub from Garmin (they now own Tacx). The hub they sent is from Neo 2 but my Shimano lockring does not screw on to the hub no matter what! Ticket still open with Garmin now for 2 weeks.
    Meantime to keep training I bit the bullet and bought a Kickr 18 as need a backup trainer anyway. To my surprise it’s quieter than the Neo and has way better realistic road feel. Using both trainers on Zwift on the big ring at high speed the Kickr is way quieter but similar in small ring at lower speed.

    Excellent content, and thanks for putting this together. The rapid fire 1-2-3 comparison was really helpful. I noticed that at 6:53, the video says TACX NEO but it's the KICKR CORE at that point in the video. Not sure which audio we're hearing... I'm assuming KICKR CORE. If someone else already pointed this out, my bad. Thanks again!

  • @hngldr
    @hngldr Před 6 lety +1

    Agreed that at that point it doesn't matter anymore. In particular because of the pitch of the noise - if it was the same loudness but sounded like say, a cheap dog whistle, then it'd totally still be a bit annoying and noticeable.
    This generation of smart trainers is awesome - can't wait to be able to get one. Sadly bought the KICKR 17 and then had surgery which went bad such that I didn't get to ride it long. Not sure I'd still be able to sell the 17 in time either.
    Ah well. Someday at least.

    The Tacx Neo is louder because the design echoes through it's hollow belly on the wooden board it is standing on. If you had put it on a rubber mat, it would have been the most silent of all because it has the least moving parts.

  • @Advcrazy
    @Advcrazy Před 6 lety +2

    Thanks for the comparison Ray!
    Do you know which one is the best in terms of minimizing vibrations through the floor? I borrowed a kickr (‘16 or ‘17 model I think) and the wirring noise isn’t too loud but It did vibrate my Appartment floor a bit even though it was on a couple inches of foam. The neighbour downstairs isn’t home at the moment so can’t know if he heard anything. But I’m suspecting the lack of flywheel in the Neo would make it vibrate less and be better for 4th floor apartments with wooden floors...?

    • @asgerhj754
      @asgerhj754 Před 6 lety +1

      Don't make that assumption per default. As I wrote on this thread as well, I borrowed a Neo and the vibrations from that one was much more pronounced than from my Kickr 1.gen. (It was also a 1.gen Neo, and I've never tried other Neos, so I cannot tell if that Neo is any different from others)

    Your Neo review is nearly three years old, is this because not much has changed? I found that odd bearing in mind you said that it was the ‘leader’.
    I’m looking to upgrade a 4 year old Bkool Pro so was looking at kickr or Neo, not too concerned about cost as this will not be changed for a number of years so I want to get it right. Is the road feel bit of the Neo a gimmick or does it get you a bit closer to a real road feel?
    Love the idea of that base!

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Nuttin' has changed. In the case of the Neo they slightly tweaked the external case design in summer 2017 just to address bikes with different disc brake configurations. But otherwise, same-same. Funny how well it's stood the test of time.

      @m0redave Před 6 lety +2

      DC Rainmaker I don't know man... I had a 2016 Neo replaced with a 2018 one (warranty issue) and it doesn't have the high pitched noise you could hear on your video, which my 2016 one did at high RPMs. They also changed the freehub. Tacx definitely changed SOMETHING.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 6 lety +3

      Most of the changes you describe were more production/manuf changes. They did a lot of little random things like tweaking how they grease stuff and some minor components. But they didn't rev the numbers. The Tacx Flux is actually a good example of that. If you compare a Flux 2 to a Flux 1 to a Flux 1 from 2 years ago, the Flux 1 original to Flux 1 now is actually a fair bit different. It's almost entirely stuff consumers wouldn't notice (except when Tacx screwed up in manuf), but is more things to maintain better service.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 6 lety +3

      RE: KICKR/CLIMB vs NEO: I don't know, that's a tough one. I actually really like the cobblestones and driving forward feel of the Neo. But I also kinda like the CLIMB. I think in some ways I still like the Neo better, potentially just cause I have this inherent trust on the accuracy numbers. It always JUST WORKS. Oh, and it doesn't require power.

    I’ve been thinking about getting a direct drive trainer, but I’ve had one question I’ve not been able to get answer for. I wasn’t to use my direct drive trainer as a progressive resistance trainer, the harder I pedal, the more resistance I get. I don’t want the resistance to be controlled in a “smart” way. Do these trainers come with an option like that?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Yup, resistance controlled trainers have a few modes, but the two biggies are: ERG mode and SIM mode. In Erg mode it's for a set wattage (i.e. 250w), whereas in Sim (short for simulation), it's a set incline level - i.e. 6%. In this video the trainer was effectively in sim mode on a 'flat' road (0%), so it reacted the same as your trainer where I had to change gearing to go harder.

      Purely depends on sound and how much you care. If you don't mind your sound, the feel/etc will be all the same (except it won't work with CLIMB). You might be surprised how much you can get for the 2016 one if you sell it off. Probably not too much lower than the CORE price.

    I guess there is no love of making the classic wheel-roller trainers silent? Because of its nature?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  Před 6 lety

      Yeah, I think general loss of love for a few reasons. First is of course the noise issue, but second is actually just that with a wheel-on trainer you need to calibrate more often because you have to account for tire pressure) - direct drive doesn't need to, and some trainers like the Tacx Neo never need calibration (don't even have the option). And then finally there's the lack of slip issue that wheel-on trainers can have. I suspect we'll continue to see direct-drive trainers push lower and lower, likely down into the $400 range in the next couple years.

    The kicker core has bearing problems causing awful noises and abnormal vibrations. Please don’t promote a bad product. Just help protect customer rights. Wahoo acknowledge faults and do not provide feasible solutions

    Why did you waste your time to find which one is more silent. It is not what a trainer is made for. I do not understand !!!!!!!!!

      People live in apartments and want to train without upsetting their neighbors? Or significant others who work nights and need sleep? Or...? Many reasons why this can matter a lot.
