Here is my new favorite shotgun mic for film work. It's the Rode NTG 4+. I have previously also used a Rode microphone but it was an older model the Rode NTG 2. This new version has better audio sensitivity and also a built in battery so it doesn't require phantom power.
This is my video review of the mic with audio samples. Also I show you my whole setup with the boom pole, shock mount and recorder.

"And now here's the sound on the boat with the built in camera microphone" *LPFBLPFBPFLBPFLPBLFPBLFPLBPFLPLFBLPFLB*
Thank you for this comment, it prepared me to turn my volume down!
this was really helpful! Its a bit more but the quality sounds great!
Great mic! Love the set up with the blimp. Thx Tom!!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for this great review and audio comparison !
I never even thought of mounting the Zoom recorder on the boom pole like in your boat video. Brilliant!
Omg Tom, thank you so much for sharing. The comparison @ 11:50 was awesome. So GREAT results from this protection. I was really really skeptical of your setup but you blew me away.
Thank you for this video. I'm a wildlife filmmaker and photographer and I have been wanting to step up my audio for a while now. I will definitely be saving up for this microphone setup without the boom pole and extra cables. It may be a while until I can afford it, but it's definitely going to be worth it! Your video has been the most useful filmmaking related video I have ever watched, great job!
I like that you showed examples of each equipment and what it would be like without it!
Was looking for a easy solution for handling a boom and a recorder for years. Your solution is so easy and simply.
Thank you so much Tom, awsome. Your video on this equipment was very informative loved it!! keep up the good work my friend. 👏
This was EXACTLY the video I have been looking for. Thank you my friend!
This video was really, really well done. Thank you for all of your hard work and reviews :)
thanks Tom - as always. You gave me some real life scenario and now I am selling some of my old stuff and buy this exact combination because not every film has the budget for a sound guy, but my assistant can work fine with my Zoom H5. Perfect video!
Glad you hear you found my advice helpful. It definitely works for my indie productions.

I did a parallel recording with the NTG2 and NGT4+ as separate tracks on a Zoom F8. I preferred the sound from the NTG2, but that's just me :) you can't go wrong with either.
Awesome training video, very helpful. I have everything but the blimp, saving up for that. Thank you.
Such a pleasure to watch someone's video who knows what he is talking about!
just many many many thanks! I just love the way you're explaining thins.
Great video Tom! Love the straightforward talk and real life examples :) I just about to get a Xoom H5 hence your video helped me a lot to make a final decision :D
Just got this whole setup n let me tell you, WAYYYYY BETTER THAN JUST MY RODE VIDEO MICRO.
Really brilliantly explained. Never seen any video like this before. Good job👍and thanks 😊
Awesome. Good recommendations. It'd be nice if you did a tutorial on the settings for the Zoom and this Rode microphone. Thanks
Great Video Tom, loved the clamp attachment on the boom...got one now thanks!
What a brilliant video. So very helpful and practical. Thank you!
Thank you so much Tom Antos. this video was very helpful and insightful.
Great review. Nice to how powerful this mic is
OMG always i been having that problem and this is the way your fix the problem. I will wait for the chance to buy one. Greating from Texas Tom
Extremely helpful! great review and with all the product links included this couldn't be easier. Thank you very much!
When I search something I need to learn and see Tom Antos has a video about it. I feel like a retreating soldier who reaches the getaway helicopter! Only way to put it haha Thanks Tom!
Nice to see you're back to active, keep up the good work Tom !
Thnx!
Thanks for sharing the experience. Excellent set up and video.
Best video of it's type that I've found. Thank you so much! Great job!
This video convinced and help me to improve my audio setup. Thanks much!
Hi Tom. Great video as usual. I just made a video about how we record sound on location and referred to this video (as a reference for more detail on the NTG4 and the Blimp) and gave a link to it in my description. Thanks again for producing this video, it certainly helped me when making choices. Cheers Michael
Great .. everything, lots of useful sound information, tips, comparisons, setup, etc. Thank you!
You have done the best review so far. thanks
Fantastic video the best one I've seen answers a lot of questions for me I really appreciate it I'm going to upgrade my sound and I'm really struggling with sound because of a road quite close to me and the metal roof on my shed hopefully this will solve all my problems thank you very much for your video
Best mic review I've seen yet! Thank you so much for this! Please keep making videos like this!
Thank you!
Thanks a lot for your advice, Tom!
Very good video just what i was looking for. Thank you
Seriously awesome! You’ve answered & helped so much😢
Thank you! Great demonstration, so useful. Thanks for the help.
Funny term that makes me chuckle is that fur for blimps is usually called a "dead wombat" since it's so much bigger. Thanks for the demos!
Always super helpful. Thanks again.
TOM You are the best As All the Time ....... You answered Exactly What I Wanna Know .... Love ya BRO!!!!
Wow! Great video! It sounds really nice, thank you so much for the review!

And you gave me all the answers i needed to record my first movie. Its really clear you give example of everything and i wanna thank you from the bottom of my hearth ❤️💪🏽
Thank you for your kind words. 🙏
Great, thanks! You might want to check out the Cheero Power Plus 3. It's a battery pack, but it's 20,100mAh and you can hook three things at a time up to it.

Nicely explained !
Great video as always 👍🏾

That NTG 2 with that blimp and dead cat could sound so clean. That inspired.
Wooooow. This is simply amazing.
Nice review, well explained 👍
Thank you my friend , your video helped
so thankful for you thanks man love you!
Excellent job, thank you!
Very nice review, Tom! Congratulations!
By the way, have you ever worked with the Rode NTG3? If so, which of them you prefer (NTG3 or NTG4)?
Thanks for this so much.
amazing and very informative video
Great content!
8:11 "Which if you've ever used (rubber band style shock mounts) you know how annoying it is, because if one of them snaps or falls off it's always a hassle putting it back in."
*gets 'Nam flashbacks to film school* Brrr!
Solid video, thank you
just for you review ,am buy this set ! so tanks!
Hey I have a question for you! I am trying to decide between getting the zoom h1 or the h2n. Is there a significant quality difference when I am using a dual system audio setup and using the zoom as a preamp? Also ** Would it be worthwhile to skip those altogether and spend the extra money on a mic and zoom with xlr? Such as the h4n
super! Wish you all the luck in life!
Great video - thanks a lot!!
Very good starter video
Great presentation! :)
wow the difference at 11 minutes is unbelievable
Funny, in the second example the built in mic (?) sounds better, although, I'm convinced that the sound you captured is something like a hided ME2, or something, maybe even rode link.
One of my favorite cinematographers that can explain details and shows how to create awesome films 👍🏻👍🏻 also is the Canon T7i good or should invest in the 800d
They're both great cameras just depends what features are more important for you.
Great setup, would it be ideal to use the zoom xy mics for recording ambience and room tone in stereo instead of using the shotgun? I plan to use this setup but I have the Ntg3 instead of the ntg4+
Thanks Tom for these videos.
Maybe you can help me with blimps? Is there a difference between the Rode BLIMPR and the Rode Blimp 2?
They both feature the Rycote suspension system, and appear identical. Thanks again!
What is the difference netween NTG4+ and NTG5?
They are both super cardioid 4+ is longer has a wider frequency response and more versatile because it has an internal battery so no 48v required and also buttons for filters like lowpass and highpass. You may have to adjust the gain higher as the 4+ is low in sensitivity and they sound different in the high end being that 5 seems to boost highs and that could be a good or bad thing depending on what your doing. 5 does slightly better job at rejecting from the back and thats all I got
Hi Tom, Lovely review. I was wondering how does this compare to the NTG3 Microphone considering its almost double the price of the NTG4+. Tnx
I love these, thanks a lot!! Two pretty basic/general questions here: how does cable length and/or geometry factor in on audio quality, are the unavoidable losses significant or do you not really notice much? And how do you handle rainy weather conditions with this setup? I guess an umbrella could probably suffice if what you're filming should stay dry as well, but if your subject is supposed to be rained on I assume you'd use some kind of mic cover. What do you use for that?
Great questions! Cable length is not an issue up to 20ft if the mic is powered like this one. Longer than 20ft and you might notice signal strength loss. Second answer about the rain. I just use a plastic bag on top of the mic if it's really badly raining. Make sure the front end of the mic is not covered though. But if the rain is light I just use the blimp and deadcat on it. It will get wet but won't damage the mic since the mic doesn't touch it. After a day of filming in the rain I just dry out the blimp and deadcat.
Alright, thanks so much for the insights!
Thanks Tom, just discovered your channel and I subscribed, I really appreciate your work. I'm a new student film maker, and I'm about to buy a shotgun mic, with a small budget, do you think the NTG-2 is a good choice? Thank you.
