    4:54 Fauna's "mommy energy" comes much more from her demeanor than from her voice itself. She's kind, calm, empathetic, and nurturing. Basically, she's a "hugs you and tells you 'you did a good job and things will be okay'" mommy. Not a "please step on me" mommy.
    At least, until she pulls out the deep voice. Then things change.

    I think a lot of the perception of Fauna as mommy is just people projecting their expectation + by design, she's "mother nature", but I would say that if you listen to her yapping she's that dorky classmate in high school / college straight from 2009.

  • @sugarqbs
    @sugarqbs Před 2 měsíci +68

    As a follower of Vtubers, I think the Mommy thing comes from what we call "gap-moe": the cuteness/appeal that comes when the expectation of a character is juxtaposed with their reality. VTubers draw a lot from Japanese media and anime in particular, mediums that love to feature opposed traits within the same character (like a terrifying mob boss who loves his kids or a clumsy god of death). Fauna's general personality is very dorky, nerdy, soft-spoken, and caring, so she kinda fits the motherly mold in terms of nurturing aspects but (as you alluded to) doesn't match the typical archetype of deep-voiced, commanding, "dommy mommy" energy. 99% of the time, she's more of "mom" or "big sis" than "mommy." This is where the gap-moe comes in.
    There is another vtuber in Fauna's generation with a much more consistently "mommy" voice: Ouro Kronii, and she spends the majority of her time in the lower part of her register, giving her that classic mommy voice. Her fanbase is also rabid about this, but Fauna has specifically won the title of mommy because she's generally not mommy: the overall presentation of this friendly girl-next-door character makes the switch to "ara-ara" Fauna particularly striking. On top of that, Fauna has a history with soft-spoken ASMR and other more traditionally parasocial techniques that have cause the saplings (her fanbase) to view her particularly in this familial role.
    For a more technical psychological explanation, this fits pretty well into how delayed gratification functions in gambling: by denying the reward in proper ratios, viewer retention is actually increased and the response to the reward is heightened.
    TLDR: Fauna is mommy because she uses it sparingly and wields it like a hidden power.

    • @NonJohns
      @NonJohns Před 2 měsíci +6

      nah, i think you're mixing up juxtaposition with the archetype
      Kind of like if a car normally goes from 1 mph to 20 mph, the gap ratio is rather insane, but you wouldn't call it a fast car
      with that in mind, fauna's mommy power is huge, but not because she has sparing gap moe, but because shes mommy ALL the time
      a perfect example would be the Kronii Fauna Asmr stream, where kronii would bully and fauna would be soft and caring (which i think are ideal for the mommy archetype)
      my tldr:
      fauna is mommy all the time. so when she does amp up, it feels like an honest extension of her character, and not just fanservice

She feels like a caring teacher carefully directing her class of young children, or a child's tv show host in the way that she addresses chat a lot of the time.

    Suprising to see a voice analysis for a vtuber, but very interesting. It's true that this must be pretty difficult to keep up. Sometimes you really notice her voice cracking a bit, not much but it is really noticable because of the things mentioned in the video. Always wondered about why that is before.
    Truth be told I also never got the "mommy" image with her besides the intentional low voice she rarely does on purpose. Maybe it's just the meme that stuck since her debut or her general model design, but as she mentioned in the past it's more like the typical young "sister" voice type she tries to accomplish.
    So this means that she must be very aware of her voice tone and probably puts a lot of effort in it (I kind of knew, but this video made me a bit more aware of it than before).

How she acts is very mature and nice and calm for the most part even though she's dorky af also the kind of dependency she's fostered in her saplings is very reminiscent of a mom leaving her kids to do something for like 10 minutes to come back and find em crying. I don't know what an "empty" voice would sound like, even if I now understand that Fauna has a "full" voice.
    I'm also curious of your opinion regarding if Fauna sounds like this naturally, or if you think she might be making an active effort. Her aparent inability to go low without unintentionally using her ASMR sensual voice tells me that this is probably her natural register, but the fact that it's so perfect makes me think it's the result of years of training (which I know she has). She's gentle and soft spoken, which maybe reminds the viewers of the nostalgia where they would be pampered by their mothers when going to sleep. It's why her ASMR streams are one of, if not the best out there. It's what I think anyway.

    I think the main reason is she is "mother" nature play apart of it, but if you look at one of the top actual HoloMom. Pekora mom's voice are also similar to Fauna in a sense it try to make it higher, cuter and younger, but be an actual mom make that voice sounds mommy

    Fauna's voice is 20-30 year old sweet caring mom not 30-45 smoker/drunk, cougar trying to dominate younger guy.

    Didn't know this thing is called uptalk. It will be interesting if you'll make similar videos about other vtuber's voices, for example Towa.
    (I highly recommend checking her stream called "Unpacking")

    Yeah i am personally addicted to fauna's voice and i like her enunciation, and uptalk patterns
    like
    "because- REALLY _i don't know,_ whats going ooooon?"
    its very expressive and maintains perfect trio despite the ranges in which she speaks at
    and for enunciation, she says button instead of buh'’n and various other habits
    i used to listen to fauna streams and mimick her because i wanted to emulate what was so charming
    still haven't figured it out but oh well

    I haven't listened to Fauna and have relied on comments saying that she's got the "mommy" energy of HoloEN. Now after your analysis I'm also confused. I assume it's her streams or maybe there's a cutesy type of "mommies" that I'm not aware of.

  • @cognitivebreak8312
    @cognitivebreak8312 Před 2 měsíci

    IIRC Fauna has a similar opinion, and views herself more as a sister figure than anything, but doesn't mind saplings viewing it differently.
    It fits the mother nature lore, occasional deep voice, and some of the asmr, so I can see how people get that view. I don't think 'Mommy' fits her usual voice, though maybe 'Mom' would?

      I don't know how much that holds up across languages, but in my native language it works exactly like that too. Questions end with up, others end with down, ending a sentence that not a question with an up is technically incorrect, and sounds unnatural, way more so than in English.

    This video goes a long way to helping me understand why I love Fauna's voice, but a lot of similar high-pitch, low-weight anime girl voices get grating.
    A lot of her 'mommy energy' comes from her ASMR, where she has to regulate her voice both to get the desired ASMR effect and to balance against the sensitivity of the mic.

    If you're game for checking out members who primarily speak Japanese -- they'll typically BE Japanese -- then I'd be interested in seeing an analysis of Oozora Subaru. I can't really call the voice she uses cute or sexy, and yet, while I love voices like Fubuki's, Sora's, Zeta's, Fuwawa's, Mumei's, and, yes, Fauna's... Subaru's usual voice still has some kind of appeal.

    • @Miriiverse
      @Miriiverse  Před 2 měsíci

      Maybe I will! Certain parts of how voices work carry over between languages and cultures, and some things are totally different. I don't have a lot of knowledge/experience with the nuances of Japanese speech but it could be fun to research for a video.

    Have you guys ever heard VideogameDunkey's wife LeahBee? Since Fauna's debut I'm not entirely convinced they're not the same person.
    I'm pretty sure the mommy thing is more of a degenerate thing that just kinda stuck with her being a representation of mother nature lol

  • @RawBlue

    According to other EN members, Fauna speaks like this always on and off stream. Similar to how Kiara has done, I believe it has become her normal voice. Pretty interesting

  • @whong09
    @whong09 Před 2 měsíci

    Fauna's gone beyond mommy and become granny, something she sometimes embraces. She jokes about being 4.5 bn years old, her concerns and tastes as she describes them are more stereotypically associated with old women. That's part of what makes her Fauna, the clash between being perceived as old and being perceived as young.

    The person in the video talks as if the vtubers themself are intentionally speaking the way they do, which is interesting
    Where I feel like it's more likely just their natural speaking voice and I feel like to do all this stuff intentional, you already have to be familiar with all the technical knowledge that this person has

      If you're looking for references for her range, I'd suggest her video "【DON'T SCREAM】She'll be my emotional support right? ...right?【with ‪@KaelaKovalskia‬ 】" around minutes 101-110 if it doesn't get clipped. Her voice really changes quite drastically due to it being a horror game, it's uninterrupted for the most part!
