This song/album was a HUGE hit for Gerry back in ‘78. I was 19 when this came out and the song was a monster! Gerry was in a previous band called “Steeler’s Wheels” who had a hit song called “stuck in the middle with you.
Baker street was such a huge hit, Gerry never was able to come close to its success with his following releases. He slipped into depression and sadly drank himself to death years later.
Every song by Rafferty is my favorite. Prolific artist and songwriter. RIP

Another of Scotland's great artists. Couldn't escape hearing this everywhere in 1978. This album finally dethroned the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack from #1 on the Billboard album chart! His first name is pronounced like "Jerry," not "Gary."

I bought this on a 45 way back when. I have the single version which wasn't as long as this, thus missing out on the extended instrumentation. And I've always been a sucker for the sax. I think it's the sexiest instrument.
Love this song. It came out the same year as 'Year of the Cat'. Both are very unique with top notch instrumentation and smooth jazzy production.

Baker Street is in London and, goodness me, it certainly is a soulless place now. Actually, it was lovely when this song was released.

Just FYI, the intro song by DMX titled "Slippin'" sampled some instrumental melodies from "Moonstreams" by the late, great Grover Washington, Jr.
