NS 9649 Close Call with Pedestrian - Chesterton, IN

- Eastbound NS intermodal train hauls through Chesterton, just seconds from hitting people that were fouling the track. In the beginning, you can hear 61C blow its horn, warning them to get off the track. After the people leave, Chesterton police ended up showing up looking for them by the crossing.
The engineer looked angry and flipped off when he seen people on the main line

Think he stuck up the finger.
"Hey let's see how close we can get to a train without actually getting hit."
"Sounds like a plan. We'll bring our kid too!"

I can only imagine the stress level for the engineer - knowing that all it takes is for the idiot to stumble and there would be absolutely nothing he could do but watch as his train takes somebody's life in front of their family.

Videographer should have called the Rail Road Police, not the regular police. They would have either arrested them for trespass with that video as evidence, or fined them with a court date. That was clearly dangerous and could have led to a derailment if the engineer applied his brakes too hard.
But if she had fallen, it would've made for a great video. But you'd never see it because CZcams has to back up the liberals liberals will tell you they run the world and everything is perfect when they're in charge so nothing actually happened here don't look. I read an article that at least half of all train engineers have experienced a fatal incident while operating a train. I didn't confirm that fact but based on these videos, I would say it's close.
The engineer of the second train was blowing the horn at those trespassers that were on his track up ahead. He was probably saying; Get the hell outta the way!
He layed on that horn too. No crossing sequence, just one long angry scream
I went to middle school and high school in the area and would always walk over to this spot after school to go railfanning. I would see reckless behavior like this all the time. They're trying to get the area to become a quiet zone. With frequent stuff like this I don't see that going so well.
It could send them to the quiet zone someday...
Although I do understand that you would be annoyed by the horns if living close by. And I wonder if they are really necessary. They don't use them for crossings here in Sweden.

When this happens the conductor is supposed to tell the dispatcher about what happened and the dispatcher will notify local authorities.
He should have called the Rail Road Police, not the regular police. They would have either arrested them for trespass with that video as evidence, or fined them with a court date. That was clearly dangerous and could have led to a derailment if the engineer applied his brakes too hard.

Does the derailment in Ohio not too long ago ring no bells? Seriously, while that was due to track issues, if he tries to stop too hard to not end her, he risks a derailment. He is right to be angry, but maybe he ought to just hit the horn and keep on keeping on. She's no match for that train.

I'm from New South Wales Australia n most of my family worked on the railway lines fixing them up n what not.
1 day my uncle invited me to walk the tracks with him n his work crew to make sure that there's no damages to the track n we saw a person hit n killed by a teain. He has every right to be pissed off. His n the family of those ppl he almost killed because of their stupidity.

I understand that people want to take pictures with trains. I get it. I like trains too. I also love motorcycles and classic cars. That doesn't mean that I stand on the freeway waiting for one to come by so I can grab a selfie with it.
These are TRAINS. They can't stop like cars can. They can't swerve like can. They can't do ANYTHING except keep rolling on the same track. I don't understand why people have so much difficulty grasping this fact.
MAybe I missed something but where were they doing that? IT looked like they were just walking about, again maybe I missed something (I tend to do that sometimes. 😂)

Good thing, too, I love these horns, but would soon get fed up of the racket. Besides, our railways are almost exclusively fenced off, so there's no need for all the flashing lights, bells and multi-chime horns that North American trains have.

That wasn't a close call! It *may* have been a strange, new railroad variant of the Lot Lizard... but it wasn't a close call.
On the Norfolk Southern's "Chicago Line" (North) and the NS' former "Nickel Pate Road" Line (South) those Intermodal Trains run on very tight schedules, and when they pass up the street from where I live, they are flying through like a BAT OUT OF HELL! Yet, people like to play GAMES...far too many times with deadly results!
That K5LA is soothing even from a km away and especially they were not wearing PPE like reflective safety vests with NS logo, hard hats, earplugs and safety shoes

I know this video is about the near miss but HOLY COW DOES NS 8372 HAVE A GOOD HORN! Magical 1st gen 70s K5LA, so much better than the raised letter 3rd gen K5LA on NS 9649. Despite all being K5LA horns, they're not even in the same league when it comes to sound quailty. The OG horns were made with so much more craftsmanship, effort, and skill. Not like the modern day ones made by soulless machines.

I was a railroad conductor for a while and it’s definitely something that would ruin your day I almost hit a guy on the railroad tracks and it scared me and also pissed me off train tracks are not a safe place to just walk on especially a main line like that
