To anyone watching in 2021, I'm pleased to say that the component troubles have been fixed! The markers are MUCH more visible on the map, the reverse side of the board is a straight brown-and-tan sepia map that any marker would show up very well on, and the compass features a little wing-nut to adjust the tightness, and a very sturdy rubber band in case the pen holder breaks. It's real good!
Are you referring to the expansion components? Or is that for the base game box?

I feel your pain. I had that exact experience after I purchased Warhammer Diskwars, and then watched the SU&SD review of it before playing it. Still ended up quite enjoying Diskwars though.
To be fair, them disliking a game doesn't mean it's bad! They didn't like root, and I loved it. Bought it *based* on their review, even :D
Your production values have improved so much! The closeup with the scurvy alert was incredibly soft lighting, and the audio quality is so much nicer than your early work. Thanks for continuing to put out great content - and working hard on making it funny as well as interesting!

Great review of a fun game. 🙂 They left out in their description what I think might be the most important rule in the game - that if a player searches for treasure and Long John Silver isn’t sure if they found the treasure then they found it. This helps mitigate a good deal of possible vagueness in when someone wins the game.
Another interesting technical bit they left out, Long John has two sets of clues he can give, “normal” clues and clues that give less than normal amounts of information. The hitch is that he can only give out the less useful clues if he first gives one of the other players a token that gives them a bonus of some sort like a free action. So Long John has to choose between giving useful clues and giving less useful ones but also helping the players another way.
Doug Rosengard If there's one weakness to this (not yet played by me) box, I'd say it's the rulebook. I've read it multiple times and had overlooked this specific rule. It's definitely in there, but was described in such a way that I had to jump to a different part of the booklet to read about them before understanding the general flow of play. Thanks for noting it, and I agree that it's another clever way of generating asymmetry in the information the players have while searching.

I'm glad you guys said something about the board's contrast. Both my production and graphic design sensibilities were offended immediately by the hard-to-see markers. Seems like a really obvious thing that the authors should've caught at any one point in testing.
It sounds like the game would work really well with chalk pens though
I feel like a classic parchment map would've both suited the theme and played better...
I'm surprised Matagot didn't learn from Captain Sonar that the best way is a perspex cover for the map!
As a fellow graphic designer, I agree. I guess the game designer felt everything should be bright saturated colors like other board games. But they should make the map sepia color with dark brown lines and shading like a real treasure map from the 1700s.
Always Falling Short yeah. I don’t know if they show it or not but there is another side of board that is much easier to see.
My favorite thing about SUSD is you can tell how much quinns loves a game by how goofy he is in the review. Laughed out loud at him looking for his pen jammed in his ear

I bought and love this game, and had the same issue with the caliper. I found a really easy way to fix it, though! Judy twist the bolt -clockwise! It was easy enough that I, a relatively weak lass, can do it with my bare hands easily.

You're not alone. I found their channel two weeks ago when a friend of mine said he was buying a new game. Haven't hit the podcasts yet, but I just finished the last bit of backlogged video about an hour ago.
I even have hobbies, a regular game group, and a very busy career. It's thanks to my second monitor that any of this was possible.

Phil Watkins Their production value is far better but Quinns and Paul had auch a great synergy. Don’t get me wrong I love Matt and think his solo stuff is great but I feel that he and Quinns are a bit too much alike to make a great duo.
Matt shouting “it’s a family show” in the background got me good.
Our compass became loose as well, but you use a screwdriver to tighten it back up and it works again.

I've found that the metallic colored ones, especially brass colored, tend to work great for showing up on anything. I don't know if they make dry erase ones in brass but it's something to consider.
Never been this early. Tip: if you're getting scurvy skittles will cure it. Or like literally anything.

This is one of my most favorite games to teach to tables (I teach board games as my job). This game is not for everyone but once people figure it out omg it's amazing. It's one where everyone wants to be long John. My friends play in a different way where long John never draws on the board. That's what the players need to do. It causes the players to work more than long john
I remember you guys talking about playing the prototype with Rodney Smith at the gathering of friends on your podcast. Since then, I couldn't stand in place and wait to get it.

this feels like a non co-op version of Fury of Dracula and that is one of my favorite board games so I have to give this a shot!
If anyone here in the future (or in the FUTURE future) is still having trouble with pen visibility, I'd like to suggest that you try using a chalk marker. They show up well on most everything and wipe clean off of most surfaces as well.

My solution to the markup longevity would be to get a clear/semi opaque piece of white plastic and use that. It would probably show up better as well, although you would have to store it separately and not in the game box.
I'm worried this game would just be too finicky and easily devolve into a game of "Well the dot was there and your search circle was 1mm to the left so...". There's always competitive people in my group where I worry about this.
This actually is covered in the rules: "If the circle contains or touches the location of the treasure, the treasure is found!" and then, more importantly, "If Long John Silver has any doubts about the accuracy of his answer, he must declare the treasure as being found."
It actually forces LJS to be more methodical when he's hiding it, i.e... knowing that if a pirate searches a part of the building that he's hid it in, it's assumed that they've searched the whole building.
First off, Quinns, is that a Netrunner Link tattoo? Second off, hats off to you guys continuing to drive me into the poor house. But when I'm finally on the streets I'll at least be able to make a fort out of my board games.

The solution to your business foundation problem is to adopt Long John Silver's methods. Point a loaded 18 pound cannon at your "customers" and then ask for donations.
POSCA marker pens or chalk pens should be good for this. A slightly damp cloth would wipe it off clean as long as the surface is non-permeable.
A+ for Quinn's straight face at 14:00. Masterful composure.
I love this game. Extremely exciting, thematic and unique. But the times were not kind to the map. Despite silica gel bags, the area around the folding lines are just screwed 😂 also, don't get me started on the compass. I literally have back up compasses and a screw driver in the game box. I still can't dislike the game!
Finally I can combine treasure hunts and board games in one transcendental experience. The second coming is here.

Surely then, the board has a sepia "play" side and a nice looking background on the other side. The sepia side also has red outlines of im assuming places Long John couldn't have buried it.

I dont have this game so I cant test it, but maybe use a liquid chalk marker? It is opaque enough that everyone can see the ink. Tho you'll need some wet wipes or damp towell to erase it all
