I can't put into words how grateful I am that you're celebrating Joey Santiago like this. So iconic and memorable in everthing he does as a musician.
Joey is exactly the kind of guitar player I’d love to be. Those songs. My god, those songs are just incredible and every note he plays feels like a crucial part.
This is a tremendous video. Your content always fantastic. Thank you.
As a drummer, i always thought the same exact thing.
You can't overlook that the lion's share of his catalogue is working with Charles and Charles is a force of nature himself. So you need someone that is willing to sit back and work around 'the main guy' as it were. He is like a sniper, sits back until the target is in sight and lets rip then fades away again. No full on assault like most lead guitarists. This was a great analysis of an endearing musician.
Perfect analysis.
Just saw Pixies in Chicago last night. Joey was on fire!
Great video. I'd be interested in a similar take on Malkmus but he's hard to nail down
You don’t have to play all the time. That’s the best and maybe most important thing I’ve learned in the past couple of years. Thanks, Eric; your channel not only fits my style of playing but also my sensibility and life philosophy in general. Keep it up!
What a fantastic description of the elements of Joey's playing. Patreon'd.
This was so great, Eric! You looked like you were having a great time and we love to see that! ✌️😌🎸
I love his unison bends on 'dead' so simple and it just makes you want to blast that song as loud as you can
Amazing ! Joey is a very underrated guitarist to me. There's no show off in his playing, just the cool stuffs that will serve the songs the best. Thanks for sharing these great techniques - which will be great only if we manage to make them fit the context of a song as well as Joey does.
Hey Eric. If you were not at Cubs game in Chicago, there's a doppelganger out there!
What I love so much about artists like Joey Santiago - and, as always, major kudos to Eric for bringing so many of us into his experience of the musical world - is how Joey developed his own sound and approach to the music he created, yet he cites guitar inspirations familiar to us all and often cited by others in vastly different genres as their inspirations too. Shows us that knowing and understanding so many great guitarists across the musical spectrum can lead us to a place of our own.🌟
What an excellent video and a very worthwhile subject. He is the goat of dissonant guitar playing.
Mastering when not to play is the hardest musical skill to nail down, appreciate this lesson.
This tribute to Joey reminded me of one of the reasons I play guitar. Amazing highlight man! LOVE it!
I have been following you for a while, partly because you offered nice Pixies tabs early on. I have always loved Joey's playing, and I loved how much you appreciated him too. Thanks for this.
Great video man! Really interesting. Would love to see more videos in this same vein of lesser discussed players.
Everyone talks about Hendrix, Clapton and Page but you never see videos talking about the Joey Santiago’s of the world. I think Nick Valensi would make for an interesting case study video.
This is great. Thank you.
Love your tone on this lesson, Eric!
Love this! Thanks. You may want to credit the Pixies with the quiet loud aesthetic though, I think most do. At least in the grunge rock pop genre.
Fantastic video, thanks again!!
Amazing, vital video. Thanks so much for this.
Thanks for giving Joey his props ❤
What a great topic!
Love your style!
What a great video. Thanks for the analysis of the approaches of our alternative guitar heroes.
Thanks Mr. Haugen!
Adrian of Anyone Can Play Guitar uploaded a Serge Gainsbourg analysis, and now this has been uploaded. That’s my weekend sorted. Thanks for facilitating my Champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget. 🫡👍🥳
Thanks I will check that out. I love a bit of Serge!!
Eric Haugen’s channel and Anyone Can Play Guitar, Adrian’s channel, are two of the best out there. They each have their own signature style and voice as players and teachers, and I always recommend their channels to anyone interested in guitar and music.🌟🌟
The two best guitar CZcamsrs out there
One of your best!
Good advice, restraint is a skill, a skill most metal shredder don’t have.
A cracker of a tutorial video. When I saw it was only 10+ minutes I was thinking "How's he gonna cover Joey S in such a short vid?!" But you totally nailed it Eric, you're the master distiller of guitar genius! 😊
thanks a lot. loved it.
Cool listen!
Joey Santiago is such a dude. I love these named motifs - twinkle etc. Didn't hear about those before. I love the Pixies weird structures like 3 bar loops. Usually I can get them, but Dig For Fire still eludes! Very cool episode, thank you Eric.
(Rock Me) Joey Santiago is wildly underrated. None other than Bowie tried to hire him -- and he said no. Thanks for this shout out, sir.
fantastic video
Finding singable “phrases” in everything you play. That’s one of the many things I got from him. And the unison bends, for sure. And not playing all 6 strings at once, one or two is enough.
I love his noise
He's one of my favourites, thanks for doing this! Love what he brings to the songs. Reckon a day of listening to the Pixies is on the cards.
Love it! Fugazi next? ❤
I hate the Pixies - hard to play their songs all alone! Seriously, one of my favourite bands, a great guitar duo, and Joey is such an underrated guitarist. Great analysis Eric!
The Wes thing = The Cherub Rock thing. Or the 3rd stone from the Sun thing
This was sick! Joey Santiago is one of my top 5! another one is John Reis, I know you did one for drive like Jehu! But one on specifically John would be rad. His style, especially with drive like Jehu but also hot snakes absolutely rewired me on how I approach my guitar.
Anyways thanks man! Much love and keep playing 🤙🏼
Someone once told me after a show that I reminded them of his playing. I’ll take it.
It was nice of Steve Zissou to grant you shore leave.
I was listening to double nickels on the dime and I heard some stuff I think influenced Joey…these pixie like under n over blended discordant ambiance stuff…also on buskers flip yer wig I hear frank black style chord progressions…pixies broke so fresh but they were big listeners themselves
Huskers…not buskers lol
Bended not blended-
Yes! Such a tasteful player to study. Saw them in Stockholm last year and I also think he has a "Neil" thing! He did a wild one note Cinnamon Girl style solo.. very Pixies!
you should look at some primus riffs. despite being so bass focused i think larry has some great underrated riffs
Vamos!
I need to watch the first 3 mins of this video before every rehearsal/ gig/ recording session..haha!
The rest of the video is awesome too 😉 you Bone Machine sounds legit, saw them in '88 at the Roxy in Hollywood after hearing that song on KROQ, been a fan ever since, Joey's such an inventive, understated player, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Great video and the insight into the philosophy behind it is what makes it so, so good. I love Joey's work on the Pixies and it was foundational for me. At the time, I love the Frank Black solo stuff maybe even more due to Lyle Workman's play on similar chords/themes. What do you think of Workman?
Now that's a nice herringbone tweed. Along with guitars, Eric has the nicest jackets.

Dig the BobCat bite😁👍
😎✌👍❤🖖
A lot, I think! Pixies is one of my favourite bands
Great video. Would love to play pixies songs with you!
By the way, a minor note on double stops - here in the UK, my guitar teacher referred to the bend such as the Hey chorus a a double stop, I wonder if that's what Joey was referring to! (Although in music class at school, they established double stops in the violin-type definition too)
Sometimes less is more
The not always playing is something I really have to work on. I could also carry that over to talking 😊 What was is that Mia Wallace said about uncomfortable silences?? 😆
That Vox is epic sounding! How’s the output on these pickups?
Low! They're basically strat pickups - it makes for a very unique sound for sure!
Rock me Joe ❤
Gday mate
That Supro sounds awesome here
If that’s what you’re using
👍🇦🇺
That Amulet is INFALLIBLE! It always just sounds right.
Can you do some Dinosaur Jr maybe even Start Choppin??? seems yo ur alley! Thanks for all the wonderful info, i’m in a band now because if teachers like you :)
Such an interesting human being.
I think that Glenn Branca’s style would really interest you.
nice jacket

gouge away!!!!
Thanks, Eric
dang whats the song in the end?
Bone Machine! Such a siiiiiik riff
HEY
BEEN TRYIN TO MEET YOU
so weird- I was just thinking of Joey Santiago. He kinda reminds me of Kirk Hammett
One of the great Filipino music heroes!
The balance between the volume of your voice and the guitar is off in this video, Eric. I have to turn the volume way up to be able to hear what you say and then you blast a guitar part and my neighbours probably splash their coffee downstairs.
noted!
(I obsess over this by the way)
@@EricHaugenGuitar your videos are some of the best
