  • During a recent trip up to Washington D.C., I made a side visit to Jerry Yagen's Military Aviation Museum. I thought it would be good to visit Jerry and check out his place. As you'll see, it looks very very familiar . . . a lot like another aviation attraction and facility I know of. Anyway, come on along with me and check out the great collection of planes, and get a glimpse of a little air show that was going on at the time of my visit.
    Note: My trip to Washington D.C. was before the last Presidential election. I brought my Ostynn the Ostrich book and the spirit of unity to the political beltway to promote the message,
    IT TAKES TWO WINGS TO FLY!

    So, on the B-25 "Wild Cargo"--- I'm the guy who hand built the belly section aft of the bombay doors.-(along with a million other things)
    We were restoring her in Woodstock GA.
    It was a big job, building that belly! I still talk about it and show pictures!
    I haven't seen her in about 18 years! Until i stumbled upon this video... I recognized the name Jerry Yeagan and wondered if it might be seen in the video, and sure enough, there she is!
    Thank you Kermit for making this video! I was so excited to see "my" b25 sitting there!

    I met Jerry Yagen at Ardmore Airfield in Auckland where his Mossie was built. He got me and some other random visitors into the hangar where the plane had been built for a look around. He was generous with his time and unfailingly informative. You could just see the sheer pride he had in the plane. Top guy!

    I live 80 miles from Fantasy of Flight (Daytona), drove past it on I4 many times, but never knew what it really was. Thought it might be some sort of tourist trap. At some point I learned that there were WWII airplanes there, so I took a trip over there one day and was blown away. I loved the restoration shop tour and the "back lot" tour. Went home and told all of my friends about it. Went back a year later with my dad and found that it was closed. I'm a WWII buff and I work at an aviation university, but never knew this treasure was in my backyard. Many of my co-workers were also unaware as to how extensive it was. I think the advertising was not effective. I sure hope it comes back to soon. Fly a banner up and down the beach or something. Anxiously awaiting the reopening.

      I was born and raised in Daytona....not to far from where you work. If you haven't checked them out yet, visit American Aero at the New Smyrna Airport and the NAS Deland Museum at the Deland airport. @TVCJohn Před 4 lety +1

      @@UmustBk1dd1ng...the cool thing about the Deland airplane is it was recovered out of Lake Michigan. The Navy gave it to the museum to put back together. AA is nice because they have an open hanger(s) to go thru. You can get up close and see the magnificent work the mechs do there. You will see fliers and other aircraft in various stages of restoration. Sadly...that is where the Collins Foundation B-17 spends it's time off season.

Don't know who owned it back then but great to see still flying! Thanks for the tour Kermit! PS - Why do many airshows insist on blaring music over the sounds of vintage aircraft :-P! Hearing the sounds of old radials, Merlin V-12's, etc. what people come to listen to not a soundtrack of era music, drives me nuts. Was very grateful at recent Pike's Peak Airshow in Colorado Springs I attended last month they didn't blare the music.

      Agree with the sentiments about FOF vs. III & loved the movie 633 Squadron. Totally disagree about the soundtrack for think most do not need/want to hear the theme music of a 55 y/o fictional movie (which anyone could hear anytime they choose..) when there is a real (& very rare) mosquito flying around. Incredibly annoying in my book. Much rather hear the Merlin's sing their duet A cappella.

      @@NesconProductions Yes, I have found myself feeling annoyed at airshow "soundtrack" music before now.
      I may be biased in this case though as it was a movie my grandmother took me to see at the cinema when I was 8 years old.
      As a musician and sound engineer by trade, I do think that that piece of music is particularly stirring, but I also love the unadulterated sound of Merlins flying by.
      At around the same period I was "buzzed" by a Hawker Hurricane at low level at RAF St Athan.
      That was a Merlin Moment never to be forgotten by this 63 year old kid ...
      Replaying that memory I also see that I was stood next to a radar controlled Bofors gun which tracked it's every move ... probably wouldn't be allowed to be so close to such things these days, Health & Safety and all that.

    • @NesconProductions
      @NesconProductions Před 4 lety +1

      @@KozmykJ Gave you a thumb for your comment though I'd counter that with I've found myself at airshows on numerous occasions having to sit/stand very near where speakers were located & having to endure hours era music/commentary blaring in my ears to the point it by the end of the show was half deaf (like after going to a rock concert and sitting in the front row). I'd get to airshows early for a good view of the flight line/runway & to record such and unfortunately that's exactly where many airshows put their speakers. Because a lot of the audience are elderly think they try to compensate by cranking the volume even louder. Instead of hearing the engines of aircraft, in my recording mostly what I'd get was - 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (from Company B)', 'In the Mood', etc. plus a lot of commentary on the aircraft from announcers. I actually like Big Band music (come from a family of musicians who played such) but not the time or place at an airshow. Same goes when displaying modern jets and get treated to 'Highway Into the Danger Zone' (personally thought Top Gun was ridiculous/terrible movie yet any airshow with fighter jets seems always on playlist :-P) or some patriotic tunes with speakers trying to match the volume of jet engines - uggg! PS - USAF Thunderbirds/USN Blue Angels: guilty as charged. Now if it is an important message like don't touch the aircraft or a lost child such are necessary interruptions. If someone wants to hear era music anyone can go on CZcams & look songs up or go out and buy records or CD's of such. If people don't know what sort or aircraft is flying the audience can get a program or read about them beforehand or after. But at an airshow wish the announcers would just shut up & and let the aircraft do the talking. Point is your comment while innocent enough (in my eye..) encourages bad airshow announcer behavior & hope you understand where I'm coming from. Off soapbox.

    Gerry's place looks very very cool but I think you have him beat. I love his collection, and especially his Mosquito, but I've just seen your three vlogs on your Mosquito and you have him completely beat. Your Mosquito, with the extended bomb bay doors looks fricking awesome, and better looking than the standard machine, I love all the signatures in the bomb bay and all its history. Great videos and thanks for posting. Roll on next Wednesday!

    The trouble today is that both wings won't meet in the middle.

    I've wanted to ask for a long time, if the Merlin is 12 cylinders, why only 5 exhaust stacks each side of the engine on the Mossie?

    • @Rudi-Mhz
      @Rudi-Mhz Před 4 lety +1

      They had to collect the Exaust more efficiently away from the wooden Construktion of the Wing. (Some had an intakte of cool Air at the first Exaust behinde the Prop, let it spin around the hot Exaust in between. ) So they collect the last two cylinders in one Exaust.

    We tend to fly on one wing nowadays, Kermit. Which may explain why we seem to be in a constant spin.

      Been closed for a few years now. Only thing open is the Museum Lite, which is open seasonally. Check the FoF website for dates and times. www.fantasyofflight.com/collection/contact-info/2015-calendar/
      As far as re-opening . . . Act III is in the design and development phase, and I hope to have it open in the next few years.

    ...another thing...looking at all these Russian aircraft, reminds me of something that has always puzzled me...I always noticed most ww2 Russian, many Japanese, and some German, French, Italian and other European ww2 aircraft have, what looks to me, very small vertical stabilizers and rudders....I always read about various American ww2-era aircraft having their stabilizers and rudders"enlarged"during development because of "poor directional stability" and excessive yaw...so...were the Russian, etc. aircraft stable even with their small vertical tail surfaces, or was it just that Americans were the only ones concerned about it, and all the others just shrugged it off and dealt with it?...always wondered about that....
