- Imagine if your pet dog was stolen and then sold for food. Unreported World went to Vietnam, where reporter Nelufar Hedayat discovered thieves steal dogs for the lucrative dog meat trade. This report from October 2014 contains footage of the preparation of dogs for food and cruelty to dogs that some may find upsetting.

My chihuahua ran away and a few months later I saw someone in my neighborhood walking it on a leash. We had a discussion and he spent a lot of money getting it vaccinated and microchipped so I let him keep it.
You can clearly see pure terror in the dog's eyes.
I'd be afraid to if someone put me in a cage with other people then randomly chose the guy next to me, killed him, chopped him up in front of me, cooked him and served him to be eaten and all in a business as usual manner.

That's what they actually do to thrives there. My father is weird, but he did show me a clip of it that was shared on Facebook of someone getting their hands chopped off for stealing. I'm sure it was for something extreme, like stealing dogs or lots of money.

In fact, when you speak about the koreans, for example, most of them do not eat dog or would even think about eating dog meat anyway. This is how some the consuming of animals that we would never even think of consuming can become normalized for a certain population. Now, of course this doesn't justify the abuse and the way the animals are treated but it definitely prevents us from making dangerous affirmations. I think that instead of pointing fingers, we should think of ways to help communities get better conditions and provide education to people so they make better choices for them and the environment, as well. It's very easy to pick on an argument a judge other people but generalization will never solve the matter.

I was born and raised on a farm in vietnam and i remember the villagers catching a dog thief and they cut his arms and legs off and left him writhing on the ground as a torso until he died, then they buried him.

This shit still happens everyday in Vietnam. Now they even catch cats because they invented an effective kind of trap and cats are often let out more. It’s sick that we can’t do anything about it, as it is hard to define whether a cat/dog is owned or not once they are out of their home. Sick.

In the west dogs are overwhelmingly seen as pets and absolutely never food, but you have to understand not every country holds the same cultural values and not everyone is like you, in the east a dog holds a very different cultural role and that's all there is to it. My mother's dog been snatched in the early 80s in Hanoi - three times. The first time, a neighbour noticed it and saved my mum's dog. The second time, the dog went missing for days. My mother and some policemen somehow found the snatchers who dyed the dog's fur yellow (he was some terrier sort with black and white fur). But when my mum called for him, he came running back to her and the police dealt with the snatchers. Sadly, the third time he was gone forever.
Our family lives in Germany now, I've got a lovely shepherd mix whom my mum needed some time to get used to because she's still so upset about losing her dog back then. She keeps blaming herself for not keeping the dog on a leash (it was the 80s, it was Vietnam), but seeing this video gave me a sad and twisted reassurance that even if she kept her dog on a leash, it might have gotten snatched either way.

I couldn't watch anymore after the man brought his own pet to be killed. I don't have a dog but I have a cat, and I would never, under any circumstances, hand my cat over to a slaughterhouse. That man wasn't even in need of food. It's just... how could you do this to your own pet?

I am a Vietnamese and yes... These situations are happening everyday here... My 2 dogs got stolen away too... Bless their souls. They usually use a stun gun to knock out the dogs unconsciously and take them away in seconds with their motor vehicle. I really hope that our situation will be better...
@Sandra Lie not everyone ties their dogs. Some people will let them run freely like my grandmother who has a backyard. However, thieves can also climb over the fence and steal them. So those who are fine with letting the dogs in their house, they bring their dogs in at night. Over here we treat animals as our friends. From one side, dog owners in "villages" want to save their pets from being stolen,but from the other side, dog eaters in "cities" want to enjoy a friday night with friends eating their favorite meat. A completely paradoxical situation filled with stigma. From one point it is about culture, from another one it is about education. Let's raise up our children by educating them in a society that avoid cruelty and recognize animal rights. Up until then villages won't have better alternatives than doing what they can to stop this slaughter. Thieves and dog eaters won't understand til it happens to them
