I feel like cutting Puberty was the right choice, because unlike the others it isn’t actually a defined feeling. Sure, a LOT of people feel awkward and moody when they go though puberty, but for some it can help grow their confidence and ultimately make them feel more comfortable. Limiting emotions to definable, relatable things was the right choice for the movie.
Fun fact: Gloom was going to be the villain of the movie, the one who turned the console black when Riley was running away and couldn’t feel anything, but the writers eventually decided not to personify it.
I mean, there’s definitely more main emotions than happy, sad, angry, disgusted, fearful. What about being in pain? Confusion? Stressed? Definitely could have made the movie better with having those guys as a cutaway gag, or if we saw more of what their home looked like. From what I remember, there’s books, tv memories, and… that’s it.
@@DonutTPOTer that's really interesting but it would imply Riley didn't feel love before which is.. concerning, children usually start feeling childish version of love as they are maybe 4/5, maybe it could appear as a background character in this baby form and during Riley's puberty it would grow as a symbol of deepening meaningful emotions as you grow up? And then it could be the emotion that merges the others at the end as you said
I can totally see that! Envy’s jealous that his team of “lesser emotions” only get to do the side stuff and don’t get to man the real controls and so he tries to get rid of the prime emotions to make way for him and his team but mostly him and then he gets rid of his team to go solo on controlling Riley and then the prime emotions team up with the “lesser emotions”
Truth be told I think that would miss the point of the movie which is that there are no bad emotionts and we need to allow ourselves to feel and express all of them. Envy is not pleasant nor nice thing to feel, sure, but I think having it be the antagonist goes a bit against this message- envy also has it's purpose and it's better to allow yourself to feel it sometimes and be honest about it with yourself.
@@ZundelArt maybe envy can start off as an antagonistic figure but eventually the prime emotions realize envy’s positive roles like pushing Riley to improve herself instead of feeling sorry for herself or taking it out on others. Maybe there can be a musical number to represent how society treats emotions like envy. “We don’t talk about envy”
Yeah! I like how ambiguous it looked. Maybe Love would eventually take shape as Riley grew up, but representing love as an amorphous blob is pretty damn accurate for a lot of people.
Envy is coming to the sequel. Though it has a completely different appearance than this concept art. It seems to look like a cute girl that’s colored turquoise, and has starry eyes.
Fun fact: Gloom appears very briefly, where the darkness took over the control panel EDIT: Pete Docter said that the reason why he was unused is because Gloom personified depression too much, and the team didn't want to trivialize that depression would go away that easily, and thus, Gloom was scrapped from the film
Love's design, along with what it is, it definitely feels like it would be important to the climax and considered in some way the first and strongest emotion
@@Wyatt_BrownI feel like it would act more as an ethereal figure if it were a character. Like a vague guidance rather than like how Joy is portrayed
@@Wyatt_BrownI think the cool thing about it is love isn’t always a positive emotion. Love can hurt like bloody hell. It can make us angry and disgusted and afraid and sad and joyful. Love can, in various contexts, be the catalyst for all of the other emotions, because love itself isn’t an emotion. It’s more a state of being. Affection and attraction could be considered emotions, but not love itself. It could have been a really cool theme within the story.
@@wanderingbelleasmr1054 That's true. Though the main moment I was thinking of is when the family is at the dinner table and Riley's remaining emotions are trying to basically stay positive, the moment wouldn't work if they had the option to be affectionate or something lol

After seeing the teaser for inside out 2 we could safely say that envy is in the movie, or someone similar, they teased envy and in the poster art for the movie there is a head with a pointy nose
Here’s an idea for a sequel, these scrapped characters could be like those “office workers” working under one or more of the main 5 emotions or “bosses”/“managers” they correspond to. Scrapping those characters can also add a lot of character depth to the ones we were given when you think about it. It also highlights the sun genres of emotions themselves. Joy herself is an incredibly optimistic and Hopeful character. Jealousy goes hand in hand with fear, disgust, and anger in that one scene where the girl’s old friend talks about the new team member. Then there’s when Riley reunited with her parents after almost running away where a combination of happiness and sadness allowed her to deal at peace and content with this new change she’s finally accepted. There’s so much that goes into simple emotions and amalgamations of multiple and I think this movie does a beautiful job of highlighting that.
