Sorry for your trial and tribulations of getting your project started re axle housing a year ago, but I think you did an excellent video which will help me here in Vancouver,BC to get my handrail repainted with great success.
I admire you for your honesty and at first I also had problems getting the correct sand. Your video is a must watch for anybody wanting to do a project with the SELKIE sandblasting attachment.

Great review, and I laughed out loud when you made it obvious you were going with that sand (before you said you were going to sieve it). I thought, "Oh man, he's gonna get so many pebbles clogging that damn thing!" I'm curious how that would work with other media.

I used one of those with baking soda (50 pound bag from Harbor Freight) to soda blast the calcium off my swimming pool waterline tile. Worked great, but I did have to keep going back to the bag to jiggle the pickup like you did. So yeah a tapered hopper would be better. Especially if you could rig some kind of vibrator/ agitator to it.

    1. always thought you had to have the sand intake up not down.. down allows water to seep back into the sand bucket. 2. If you keep leaving your PW running while filling sand bucket etc you run the risk of burning up your PW pump. otherwise good vid

  • @disenfranchisedcitizen1432

The instructions that I saw said to keep the sand suction port with the red hose facing up instead of down to prevent moot from getting into the red hose causing pulsing.

Great video and as you point out dry media is critical. Your results prove that even a cheap water blaster attachment works really well!
Like many people watching your video I also purchased the same blaster off Amazon (Australia).
Exactly the same device BUT...... it didn't work! The elephant in the room is the pressure water machine spec you need to create enough suction to get the media into the nozzle. Which means it may not work if your machine is electric (!)
These machines do not seem to provide enough flow rate or pressure to suck in the media.
t looks like everyone reporting success is using a gas driven pressure washer that is delivering around 3000 psi and 2.5 - 4 GPM. Electric washers like my professional Karcher 5/12C does not deliver the guts to suck in the media. I was using expensive 80 Grit Garnet that was dry and uniform.
Looks like I may need to upgrade to a petrol pressure washer!

On the Driving 4 Answers channel, he had his engine block sand blasted, but even though he cleaned the block thoroughly afterwards, there was still microscopic bits of sand embedded in the metal. The embedded sand then destroyed the internals of his engine when running in. Not sure if this problem will be an issue with the diff gearing on this project?

I am a big fan of Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer and always seem to have some going in the shop. I thought I heard you say you were going to spray the inside of your axle with it? In that case I would be very careful. Rusty Metal Primer cures with a soft finish as it is made to be overcoated and in my experience it can be cut with petroleum products months after it has fully cured. So I would be worried about it dissolving in the hot oil of a differential and I am not at all sure of how much damage the metals in suspension from the paint will do to bearings and gears?? On the outside it is great and even greater with a finish paint on top of it. Good stuff. If I were to paint the inside I would use an epoxy etching primer or something on that order that is impervious to hot oil. Probably best to just leave it bare and depend on the hot oil to soak the steel for protection. Interesting to see your use of the sand blaster. I have thought of getting one many times. If I did I would get a bag of sand blasting media (glass, walnut, whatever floats your boat) from my local hardware dealer as it is even quicker than just sand and should not clog. I agree a hopper would save much grief. Harbor Freight makes a small one that seems to work well when dry blasting.
