This should've been a movie instead of a series.
Die say seris are always like a movie stretch more than it should
I find a lot of TV series struggle to justify their excessive runtime.
This is a MINI-SERIES. It's the middle ground between a movie and a show.
I didn’t even know it was a series until it came out
and then it runs its course too far and everyone hates it?
just let media be how it is before it goes sour
I’ve noticed that Disney shows in general really have much better villains than their movies do. Like, aside from Iwaju, look at The owl house with Belos or Gravity Falls with Bill. And I think thats because it’s the show runners making the big decisions a lot of the time, not the execs
Despite the animation having a very low budget, Iwájú managed to do some good things I didn't saw coming though
I actually think the animation was pretty super.
@@nash6568 Yeah it looks better than most Dreamworks tv series
I was going to say "it's a TV show. Most of Disney's recent TV show villains are great!" And then I remembered I'm thinking of the ones from Disney TV Animation. This series is actually made by Walt Disney Animation. And it has a good villain? It's about time!
Same, I was about to comment gushing about emperor bells before I realised that.
No, it was actually made by an african entertainment industry called Kugali, disney just marketed it.
@@elsinaattheworkshop oh! Never mind
I had heard NOTHING about this, and regularly watch Disney +….
I wish this show would’ve gotten more marketing tbh
Its likely that they didn't provide a solution to class division because they didn't have one, or they did, but disney shot it down for monopoly reasons.
Or - me being a bit of a cynic at this point - it was just there (and that's understanding the cultural stuff) to bash Capitalism, something Disney has done or promoted before.
I was impressed and surprised that they went as hard as they did in their capitalist critique! I was sadly *not* surprised that they wimped out in the end.
@@dinosaysrawr Surprised? Why would you be surprised? Every other show or movie released nowadays injects something like that into it all the time.
@@SockieTheSockPuppet , it was surprising in light of it being a show clearly targeted mainly at younger kids, as opposed to teenagers or adults.
Also, even when a movie or show condemns poverty or homelessness or has an evil capitalist as its main villain, it's more unusual for media to implicate the protagonists and/or the protagonists' friends and allies in that system.
@@dinosaysrawr Worse has been put into kids' shows.
The lizard is basically to Iwaju what the Star was to Wish
But not pointlessly dumbed down in order to them more “marketable”.
This Is the face of someone who watches you sleep or goes to the bathroom.
Spooky
Literally didn’t know this existed until you reviewed it. That’s how little they marketed it.
It's sad that the good modern Disney Stuff get less advertise as the bad Stuff.
The owl house got some good ardvertising tho
@@ginocanterino258 until they killed the third season lol, disney hates its good media :(
@@pandaworld8166 I wouldn't say it's all disney's fault. After all many countries didn't liked the lgbtq+ messages in the show and if disney wanted to keep earning money from those countries they had to end the show sooner.
At least Magnifico wasn't another twist villain revealed at the very last minute
Same
Yeah that's why I think that King Magnifico isn't the worst Disney villain. It's definitely Hans for me.
I’m just gonna say this, he had POTENTIAL. Ruined, yes, but he had a chance to be good
My family is from Nigeria if you have any questions. Tbh, this is the first time I heard about this show, so thanks for the info. Will check it out.
How extreme is the class division in Nigeria?
As a Nigerian my siblings and mother loved it. Especially my mom who grew up
Magnifico victim cameo is so good and so real lol 😭 poor guy
Lets be honest, their best original villains of the past decade or so seem to come from their TV shows..... Bill Cypher, Toffee, The Core, King Andrias, Emperor Belos....
First time I ever heard of it. Disney forgot that they gotta market things if they want people to care.
I don't think it needed to be a movie, if anything, it needed to have more episodes than just SIX.
Its sad how much this show got under the radar because of the lack of marketing (i got an ad for it at least two weeks after release if not more). It was pretty enjoyable and also told and original story in a culture that isnt showcased in tv shows which is very cool
It also came a day before megamind 2, so all the attention went to crap on that... Thing.
When he says Bode in the thumbnail did he like, like Bode’s character in Jedi Survivor?
As a Disney villain fan, I gotta say, hopefully GREAT.
Between this and My Dad the Bounty Hunter, there’s seems to be good shows that displayed African culture respectfully.
Dang this show looks amazing. Sucks I didn’t see much advertising
Sounds like Nigerian Silco from Arcane only minus the fatherly bonds.
Honestly, the idea of a Silco -like character being taken and adapted by different cultures sounds super interesting. That comparison might just make this show immediately more marketable to outsiders with that alone.
Who doesn’t like Silco? So that would be neat. ^^
IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!!
Disney STILL calling it the "Don't Say Gay" Bill?
Well of course, they have to in order to peddle their agenda swill.
@@SockieTheSockPuppet yee
I genuinely thought it was a movie when i saw the trailer,
People who tell these stories should understand when to make ot a movie or a show,
5:52 I think Disney already has enough dead moms.
Anime teaches that there is never going to be enough unalived mothers
I'm glad to see other people talk about Bode. I thought he was a pretty solid Disney villain all things considered, even if they watered him down a bit.
4:08 that was kind of like me with King Magnifico (before I was forced to face the facts)
Will this upcoming video be about Disney villains or villains in general?
Bode is like the African version of Sykes from oliver and company I haven't seen a good Nigeria villain since wraith from dead by daylight
i have literally never heard of this show before in my life. I believe you on it not being marketed.
Reminds me of a book I read as a child called The eye, the ear, and the arm. Except it took place in cyberpunk Zimbabwe and the father hires a team of mutant detectives to find his kids.
Personally I don't think it should come as much of a surprise to everyone the Disney can can create great villains especially when you look at some of the greatest like Maleficent, Cruella, jafar, the evil queen, the queen of hearts, scar, and so many others the only problem is over the year as lgbtq, feminine rights, and so forth are becoming more common in Media Disney's focusing solely more on those aspects in their movies I'm not giving enough depth to their villain to the point where some of them are unrecognizable to the animated counterparts Disney knows how to create great villains but over the years they have softened because it's all about the money for them, when they do not realize people would be paying so much more to have classic villainy back but hey that's just my opinion
I bless the shows set in Africa?
I see what you did there 😉
This series' premise of a futuristic Nigeria reminds me of a novel I read called THE EAR, THE EYE, AND THE ARM
I love dark and realistic villains like Sykes.
Everyone lnows that wish didn't do well and thats Because of the corporate meddling that ruined it
This is literally Black panther; futuristic African country setting but mixed in with real African societal problems
Except Black panther was about Black panther and set in the Marvel universe, and Wakanda was its own country, showing a mix of African cultures, while this is based specifically in Uganda.
Its like calling Back to the future and Terminator "basically the same" because it has Americans and Time travel.
@@brown7180 You mean Nigeria?
It’s a genre called Afro-Futurism
That is the most cured thumbnail ever bruh. Uncanny as hell
Every second you're not running, he's getting closer.
I think the whole conversation about if a show or a movie should’ve been vice versa has been surprisingly popping up a lot with Disney, or Hulu, or Netflix projects
4:24 i called the weed
Waiting for the moon girl review
Yes, bring in the love of villians!!
What’s the music you used at the beginning? It sounds familiar somehow.
Honestly it seems really cool! It’s sad that it seems rare that a show is well-written and has such a great depiction of a culture while being written by people from that culture. Most of the time it’s rewriting existing characters to fulfill an agenda.
It’s an absolute treat to see original characters, I hope it goes well and that the setting and characters inspire future people.
This is out of topic but it their a chance to review a movie called Unicorn wars. It adult movie about teddy bear fighting Unicorns and I think it good movie that convey it themes. I especially like the main characters.
Treasure Planet 🤝 Iwájú
Death by low marketing
I loved Iwájú! It really deserved more love and attention, not to mention more episodes. (It felt like it ended just as it had begun.) It was definitely more for kids, but I really enjoyed and respected all of the care and passion that went into the worldbuilding, and I had great fun Googling Nigerian culture and slang. This is what Raya and the Last Dragon could've and should've been.
Have you by any chance seen ColinLookBack villain retrospective ?
I don’t understand what the comment at the end was referring to
Yeah, Bode's my new favorite villain. I see that it's inspired by the kidnappings in Lagos and elsewhere, and the whole ransom thing.
Also, you ought to learn Yoruba; you really butchered "Ajegunle."
You damn right
FINALLY someone that calls out Disney's Homphobic bs oH MY GOD- I swear it feels like people keep forgetting they pushed hard for those bills
uuuhhhh this animation looks weird
its good dont get me wrong but weird
i was kinda afraid that we wont ever get a good villain from anything besides games and maybe power rangers
ESPECIALLY FROM DISNEY
Makes sense since Disney technically didn't make this project. XD
Wait, this wasn't a movie? I saw a trailer for this once and thought it looked cool, but I forgot about it.
Ok the fact that someone called you trash for not liking the director from nimona is sickening because not only is it stupid but I think he or she had never read the graphic novel in which I have and the graphic novel told a more dark and gritty story well the movie does take its creative liberties and changed the story to make it more family friendly it was for the good but I have to admit that the director was the biggest downgrade in the graphic novel she was a more sadistic and cunning villain who didn't care about anybody that died guards were killed in many brutal ways in the original story and also didn't care about anybodys safety and was even a human like goblin and I don't know why they changed that it would have been cool and was smart enough to trap nimona in a container that even she couldn't get out of and finally she will torture prisoners and please show this comment in your villains review because it might prove a point and we still got a good movie but the director was the biggest downgrade from the graphic novel
until i saw this video i had no idea this show existed
My personal theory is that Iwaju was original ment to be disney 2024 release but after the failure of wish, moana 2 and iwaju swapped places where the former would be a tv show turned movie and the later would be a movie turned tv show.
also i feel like i didn't explain this well enough why magnifico is a villain but i will fix it
yeah like i said there's no evidence for the bad wishes, so you can't use that arguement because there is no evidence for it, that be like saying films with the be youself message is bad because they could be a sexual deviant, a racist or a violent pyscho and it's gaslighting because they don't show those.
then if he cared about the people for anything other than praise, he would take Asha's advice and return the wish, especially since wishes are pretty much what all their souls are and Asha's grandpa is 100 so he doesn't much time left, especially since Asha's dad pasted away so she doesn't want her grandpa to suffer the same fate.
TV disney villains are great 👿👿👿
3:34 good?
the lizard and the pig from moana got way too hyped up in the trailers
I know I don't mainly because I never really liked Streaming.
Just channels made exclusive. Wish all of them would just be bundled together, like how tv stations are.
yeah it was really weird to me too that i havent heard anyone talking about this show
just flew under everyones radar
Yeah I feel the same way about the show.
Seems ironic that Disney Television Animation is having better villains than Disney Animation studios lately.
03:53 Absolute W reference. That Vine is hilarious!
i love how your video feels straight from 2011
Disney:"does not market a series"
Series:"isnt popular"
Disney:hOW dID ThIs hApPeNd!!!!!!1111!!
Disney held back the writers, it had to be it, you can just tell there was a vision that was beaten over with a hammer by executives
Just to be honest I live here in Nigeria.
Which side?
@@OmarAlikaj The nation capital Abuja
I watched Iwaju and that's have some boundaries with rich and not so you know?
mans forgot about Bill Cipher for a hot minute. dudes chaotic for the chaos and that is the best villain
That's from TV, not Walt Disney Animation Studios.
@@RaisorBlade that's fair. i was counting more Disney property than you were describing, which... my bad honestly. sorry
Once again, I'm really sad that decent shows like this one are shoved under the rug by Disney and get absolutley zero marketing and thus zero recognition. I'm really glad that this video exists, because I've never heard of this show (Surprise surprise). I seriously can't help but wonder, does Disney actually PROFIT off of their releases getting a bad retention? Why else would they intentionally sabotage their own creations then?!
3:50 Emperor Belos: Allow me to introduce myself...
Seriously, you're talking about there being no good villains in Disney, but that just tells me that you haven't seen The Owl House. Belos is a villain who is a strange mix between the Horned King vives apearence and Frollo personallity , mother gothel manipulative gaslighting, and a more historically acurrate Gobernador Ratcliffe whit his genocidal and colonial tendecies.
but much more unhinged.
becoming much more threatening and despicable than King Andrias and the core of Amphibia, even though the core has conquered more worlds and committed more genocides, Belos feels more personal because his cruelty is not taken as a joke and he is never taken as a joke unlike the core because it comes from a realistic hatred and foreshadowing and we have literally seen the mountains of children's corpses that he left in his wake and the people he killed mercilessly because he did not consider them human.
Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Television are two different things.
Hey raisor I'm finally back watching your content after a while can you review the clone wars if you haven't
I never heard of this before.
A movie from Africa for Africa is heart of the hunter if you are interested
Ngl, who ever remembered or cared about this series upon release?
Poor marketing
I personally realy like Last Dragon I like that movie beer than recent Disney properties plus Sisu is my favorite character.
Oh the gecko one
My hate for Disney is not for the creators, they can make pretty good stuff like the Owl House and Amphibia, my hate lies with the corpos. It is really cool to see a show made by Nigerians and stuff, but as is typical with Disney corpos, they don't advertise properly.
After Iawju and Kizazi Moto, I hope they make a high-fantasy African animated musical--WITH HUMANS. It's a shame "The Gift" was for TLK's remake instead of an original film.
Good Vid
How come I never heard o’ him
It wasn't made by americans. There's your reason for why it didn't get marketing. If it isn't already obvious, Disney is straight up just racist, everything must be americanized otherwise it will not be shown. If it ain't american, then it ain't no good and people won't want to watch it.
He's good but lacked charisma
I see u repeat the bus scene as an "unimportant scenes" which I don't get, it's there to share Koles struggle in the mainland. Scenes like this show more description of the world around our main characters. It's there because that's the theme of this series.
It's already been established that Kole struggles. Both with the Dad treating him like crap and his mom being sick. At that point, the bus scene is just hammering the point in.
@RaisorBlade well the scene is there and we can take it however we see it even if it's not the most important thing to the story, it's not like they're gonna take it out because it's "not important". That's like saying we don't need Wreck it Ralph taking cherries and giving them to Qbert
@@swirlystrawstudios5465 Well that had payoff with Qbert telling Felix about Ralph and later joining the game. The bus scene is not important. You can remove it and it won't change a thing.
@RaisorBlade well actually qbert and ralph interacted while ralph was on his way into Heros duty. My point is, scenes can be neccesary, Kobe isn't living a great life where he lives, Qbert and ralph are friends regardless. I'm not saying I don't like the scene with him giving them the cherry it's a sweet scene, just like how we feel how unfair it is fo see Kobe struggle. I'd learn just to appreciate the effort
Fair enough. Also, it's Kole, not Kobe.
Don't feel too bad.
There is another, extremely popular Disney show 95% of Americans have never heard of. It was never aired here, it is impossible to legally get episodes of the show in America and I only know of about two or three clips that made it onto CZcams. It's outright bizarre how well it's been hidden from everyone except the intended demographic. Like they do NOT want you to know the thing exists.
Which is?
