    Good morning Todd. Just wanted to drop you a line and tell you that I have used your method of tube bending layout and it has helped me enormously . I was on a job in Pennsylvania on a cracker and when they asked for tubing guys. I had no problem stepping up to the challenge. Guys have watched as I measured and layed out bends asking where I learned this. I'm helping our fellow brothers become better tubers, tell them to watch your videos and purchase your book to reference. It has been the best money I have spent to further my skills as a UNION PIPEFITTER.
    Thanks for being a true union brother, and sharing your knowledge by writing this book.

    Mr. Weiler,
    Here are some pictures of the 1/2" SS tubing 1 1/2"radius that I bent using your book instructions that you so graciously assisted me with on phone conversation today. I cannot thank you enough. Your directions and explanations are dead on! The knowledge, skill and dedication you express in your craft astounds me! I learned so much from your CZcams video. I am amazed at the phenomenal results achieved so easily when I followed your explicit instructions. "Tube Bending Simplified" in my opinion, should be required reading in any shop class. Not only for obvious reasons but more importantly the discipline it will instill to follow and apply procedure in any job endeavor. Once again, a big THANK YOU for sharing, so affordably, perfect techniques in this otherwise tumultuous craft.
    Warmest Regards,
    Robert J Sigsworth

    Great book - I have been bending steel for years with mixed results. I finally got serious about bending tubing when I got involved in a project that needed many versions of a prototype that used tubing as a frame. Todd Weiler's book of instructions made the process of layout and actual bending completely understandable. I'm sorry I waited so long. Great book and highly recommended.

    Todd, Thanks for getting my buddy and I straightened out over the phone. It all makes sense after talking with you about how the tube spoon is laid out and used to mark the tubing on the bench. I was surprised to have you call me after I emailed you so quickly, that shows what an outstanding person you are and that you stand behind what you teach others. We are going to give it a try and let you know how it pans out for us. Thanks for ALL your help!

    Jim:Thank you for your years of U.A. service, you were probably an excellent tube bender! Our U.A. constantly stresses training, so that all U.A. personnel are always capable, and can always "do it right the first time".In addition to this main video, there are supplementary videos on this website, which will help anyone to become better at bending tube. None of us learned that which we know (which other people do not know) overnight. The people who are the best at anything; are those people who are constantly learning, putting what they learn into practice, and then becoming as good as they can be in some aspect of their daily life!One of those supplementary videos shows a perfect 5 pointed star; which can be laid out, marked, and bent in less than 1/2 hour (10 bends - 1 piece of tube). That star can then be duplicated precisely, 1 or 100 times. All bends and all dimensions for all stars will be identical.Information in this book, reveals the easy formula to be able to cut any tube to within 1/16" of needed length, before starting any of the bends for any project.Another video demonstrates a coat hanger which can be laid out, marked, and bent in less than 1/2 hour (5 bends - 1 piece of tube). That coat hanger can then be duplicated with precision as many times as you would like. Each coat hanger will be an exact clone of the original coat hanger.I did not make a video to show how to layout, mark, and bend a perfect square (14 bends - 1 piece of tube); but I have laid out, marked and bent a perfect 3" square in less than 3 hours. I used a 9/16" radius tube bender, along with 39-12/16" of 1/4" O.D. tube. After laying the cube out, the tube was marked; then as soon as each bend was bent, getting the bender repositioned to be able to make each succeeding bend was the part which took the most time. The smaller the cube is, the more difficult the tube is to bend; because when bends are close together it becomes increasingly harder to reposition the tube bender between bends!In less than 2 hours, this book can easily be read, during which time anyone will learn the basics of how to become a good tube bender. This book will then assist everyone, throughout their entire career; either with tube bending, or with pipe layout. This book is written in such a way that it can be easily referred to on a daily basis; its' compact size (4-1/2" wide x 5-1/2" high), makes it easy to carry in a rear pants pocket to be readily available whenever the need arises.To be able to contact me at any time with a question related to tube bending, or pipe layout; each and every person will find both my phone number, and my email address in each book.

    Harry: Thank you for the comment! I have tried many different rewrites of this book. I am always attempting to make this tube bending book easy for everyone to read and to understand! Just like any Haynes Auto Repair manual, all aspects of tube bending can not be explained using a simple step by step procedure. Writing an understandable book to teach someone anything, when the reader is miles away from the writer, is a complicated task. The bend radius charts (28 of them) which are explained with crystal clarity on pages 11, 12, and 13 in this book were developed for use with SAE radius benders.
    Since math is constant throughout the world; the 2 formulas on page 7 will work exactly the same weather you are bending SAE or Metric tube, no size conversion is necessary. I just have not developed any individual metric charts.

Yes, 8/16ths is also known as 1/2, but measuring to the nearest 1/16th of an inch is 8 times as precise as measuring to the nearest 1/2 inch. Whenever tube is being properly bent, the act of measuring precisely is the difference between doing an easy, professional looking job; or struggling and hoping to get the job done. Todd

    When it comes to the 45 degree bends. When I move the cl to the a.c. mark. I can't add a ref. line because the T.C. line would be the ref line . Is that correct with the tube marker? If so, do I just measure from the cl to the next cl is the next bend would be another 45 bend?

    • @toddweiler9389

      You are correct.
      For any bend angle where the T.O. dimension equals exactly 2 times the A.C. dimension, your reference mark on the bend will be the same as the centerline mark.

      This is a very good question. On page 7, in the Tube Bending Simplified book, line 18 reads: 0.01745 is the tangent of 1 degree. The answer to this question can also be found in the Trigonometric Tables on page 45 where 1 degree and the tangent coefficient intersect. why do you put 3 marks on a piece of tubing?all you need to do is figure how much you gain and take it out for each bend.

    • @toddweiler9389
      @toddweiler9389 Před 7 lety +3

      3 marks are marked onto the tube at each bend, so that the person who is doing the bending will know exactly where to place the bender prior to each bend, so each bend can be bent precisely. Further, by placing 3 marks at each bend prior to doing any bending, an entire length of tube with varying degree bends can be laid out, and all bends can be marked with precision, before even 1 bend is bent. Each bend can be bent as either a left hand bend, or a right hand bend. All bends will start by placing the bender at 1 outside mark, bending over the centerline mark, and the bend will stop at the 3rd mark. This method will work for any degree of bend up to and including 180 degrees. Most of the time, it will be easiest to bend each bend in the same progression as it was laid out on the tube. Occasionally, as in the case of a wall penetration, the 6th bend may need to be bent first. The other 9 or more bends can then be bent in any practical order. Each bend must be systematically laid out onto the tube in the proper succession to attain the greatest degree of bending accuracy. All bends, center to center, can be marked and bent to tolerances of less than 3/100". Multiple identical tubes can easily be bent by using this bending layout method!

      you are not showing the simple way to bend tubing........all you need is one mark as your center line burn your gain and mark next centerline and so on until you finish laying out your tube. ive bent miles and miles of tubing and never had to use three marks.

      In my youth; I was taught that the only way to bend tube was by using the measure, mark, bend method. At that time: I should have been a logger, I bent a lot of expensive tube into worthless firewood! There had to be a better way! In common language, this book explains an easier, more exacting method of tube bending. As an example; what if you need to bend a 9 degree bend, and keep the center of that bend perfectly on center? This book explains how to do that while making the bend look like it always belonged in that place, not as though someone accidentally stepped on the tube. As long as you are happy with your tube bending ability, that is important. Being proficient, by using this method of tube bending is simply another tool in your toolbox of knowledge to help to keep you gainfully employed. If you ever have a tube bending question, email tweiler1@new.rr.com or call 920-264-6440. I will be happy to help you to make all of your bends look as though they were bent by the most qualified professional bender.

      Using 1 line there’s a chance you’ll get lost in bends plus you would have to work left to right. 3 lines insures where the bend is and which way it goes. If you went to break and came back it’s easy to accidentally bend the wrong way. With 3 it doesn’t matter which bend you do first. The 1 line is just skipping steps in 3 line. You could also use 2 lines. It’s a personal preference which you use but to insure no mistakes the 3 line method is fool proof

      The information from this book will work precisely, regardless of whether metric or S.A.E benders are being used.
      I am understanding that the tube which you are bending is 6mm O.D. tube.
      Page 10 in the book explains that for layout purposes, it is more important to know the radius of the bender which will be used to make any bend, than it is to know the diameter of the tube which is being bent.
      On page 39 in this book, there is an easy to understand explanation for conversion from millimeters to inches, or vice versa. Neither millimeters nor inches can be used with the 2 formulas on page 7 until that dimension is converted into its’ decimal representation.
      After the decimal representation is calculated, use the 2 formulas on page 7 to calculate the T.O. and A.C. dimensional marks which you will need for precise tube layout.
      An explanation as to how to place the marks onto the tube is given on page 6.
      An explanation of a tubespoon marker is given on page 15.
      Both a contact email and phone number are included with each book to answer any tube bending questions.

    In the near future; I am planning to make a hands on visual learning video, to help everyone to better understand how to make a tubespoon marker to assist in bending tube. In addition to other benefits; a properly made tubespoon marker will assist in marking every bend, so that every bend will be bent to the precise degree needed!

    Wouldn't 22 8/16" be 22 1/2"?

    • @toddweiler9389
      @toddweiler9389 Před 8 lety +3

      +Michael Healy Mike, this is a good point. 8/16" is the same as 1/2", but 8/16 is 8 times as precise as 1/2. When tube is being marked, being precise is very important. Imagine for a moment that you are going to meet someone in an unfamiliar part of town, on a street, anywhere in the U.S.. Further, imagine that you find 16 houses on one side of the street, when you get to where you are going. It will be easier, quicker, and more precise to arrive at the correct house, if you are told to meet at the 8th house rather than 1/2 way down the street.

    It appears to be both an accurate, and efficient method to bend tube, and once fully realized, may indeed be simple.
    Headlining the title, the term "simple" seems to be used a bit loosely, and excessive in this video, particularly in light of the fact that this brief attempt to explain, express, or convey as much, frankly only served to confuse me.
    While the general tone of dialog as read by the speaker seemed to suggest a sense of ease and simplicity from his perspective, I found it a bit annoying having little to no relative understanding of terms such as "takeoff mark", or "arc mark", without having referenced the pages of the book, stated in the video that apparently explain them.
