  • In this video, I go over the evolution and brief history of the bayonets for the AKM platform. Starting from the first bayonet for the AK-47 all the way to the present day that fits the 47 or AK-74.
    The bayonet has become synonymous with the Soviet Union and their famous Kalashnikov platform that has spread throughout the globe.
    From wood to bakelite to modern plastics, the bayonet has evolved with the times.

    The best AKM bayonet ever made was the KCB-77 M7. It was a variant of KCB-77 made in 1977 by Eickhorn-Solingen to fit on AKM rifles. It's tough to find though. Due to longer length its wire cutter can cut barbed wires, it also has a screwdriver block and bottle opener on the sheath. The American M9 bayonet copied almost all of its features from the KCB-77.

    I just bought a GDR Type 1 from 1959. Its completely black with grey leather parts and a grey string. Thanks for the general info about them. I remember when one could buy them in the 90´s for like 15 German Marks. Now I paid 80€ and have seen even higher prices.

    The latest AKM bayonet can be used in the German G36 rifle!!!
    As of the usability of these weapons of war, in 1982 during the Liberation of Malvinas an Argentinian soldier stabbed a Chilean troop fighting for the British. He told this to my older brother in the 1990s. Maybe in urban combat while clearing a building bayonets can be used still.

    My good man... I realize this is an annoying question, but you seem to be the man to ask. I am looking for a type of bayonet with some specific properties.. I would like one that has removable wood or plastic panels, as opposed to the one-piece bakelite or plastic housing. The reason is because I want to carve new wood panels and stain them to go with the furniture on the rifle.. so lastly, it needs to fit and lock onto an Arsenal Sam7r-61 (which as far as I know will accept a type 1 bayonet. Any ideas as to which one I should be hunting for? Thank you in advance.

    • @GearyGunderson
      @GearyGunderson  Před 2 lety +2

      I've never personally taken one apart, but Type 1s have at least part of a tang. The grips are usually held on with a combination of glue and pins or plugs. Your could probably find one with damaged grips for cheap and use that, however as long as it fits, a Type 2 may be easier. If you reuse the metal pommel, then the button mechanism for release is already self-contained, while the button and release on a Type 1 is integrated into the bakelite handle.

    • @StrelokTheStalker
      @StrelokTheStalker Před 2 lety

      @Guns, Guns, Gear, and Guns with Geary Gunderson I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to reply to that. I ended up finding a Yugoslavian M70 Bayonet and waiting for it to come in. As you said, it has the self-contained metal apparatus already in it.
      The more difficult part will be removing the center pin, likely drilling it out, I'd imagine, and carving a new unit out of Birch laminate. I'm told I may have to slightly alter the lug on the rifle so it clicks in.
      This is because apparently, modern Bayonet lugs are actually not bayonet lugs at all, but accessory lugs that are made for an underbarrel grenade launcher, thus the lug itself is a slightly different shape, and has to be rounded out before the bayonet will click in place.
      The fix seems to be universal, but the grenade launcher theory is more sporatic online. Hard to say if its true.

    • @GearyGunderson
      @GearyGunderson  Před 2 lety

      @@StrelokTheStalker I actually had not heard that theory of the grenade launcher. I have put bayonets on several ak platforms over time and one bayonet may be a tight fit on one and a little loose and rattle in another. They don’t seem to be uniform and if some were off the launcher design or size it would make some sense.

    2:51 Is that a version of the AK Bayonet, I was given one as a gift recently and is basically the exact same in color and it does not have the rubber on the sheeth? Did they come out like with no rubber, I am also trying to get a frog for it as it did not have one. The bayonet was given as gift during the SA bush war 1975 to the person who gave it to me, when 32 Battalion base was erected in 1974-75 or around that time.

    • @GearyGunderson
      @GearyGunderson  Před 2 lety

      They were generally issued with the rubber on the sheath, but I have seen a lot of examples where it is missing completely. I am not certain if some soldiers just ripped them off or if they got ripped off and were not replaced, but I think they generally were issued with the rubber. There are some frogs for these, though it was more common to use the hangers as shown in the videos. I'm sure you'll be able to find one on ebay or somewhere else online.
