Alan's engine has, from the start of my ownership, run sweetly and without undue vibrations or other drama. The exhaust appeared healthy, with no dirty output. That is, until recent inspection after a period of prolonged engine running. Clearly, all is suddenly not well with the exhaust, and it needs fixing.

I would recommend you put a camera ( car back up camera ) in your engine bay
And a small led light
That way you can keep a eye on the engine with out pulling everything a part
Also they come in 12 and 24 volt or both

I worked for a ferry service which shall remain unnamed, and there was a story rolling around about taking one of the ships down to louisiana for overhaul. They'd shorted themselves on fuel for the next days trip by their standard math because, hey, boats empty, we should be good. As they were lining up at the pier for the night, just as the guy on the bow got a line to the pier, one engine cut out. They literally docked with the fuel in the lines.
The context of the story was a huge (contained and extinguished) boiler room fire, but yes, needing everyone to be at the top of their game.

Unfortunately, he might be ready way too late for the exhaust pipe. Shame really O.o

@@AlexHibbertOriginals not neccessarily as a shipbuilder I would suggest 316 ss for the whole thing. No fancy coatings required but ensure they are familiar with ss many are not and will cheap out and the arctic is the LAST place you need a broken exhaust ! Been there

I believe that exhaust pipe heat will keep the lagging dry. It may be much cheaper to replace the exhaust pipe with more mild steel and just use the engine more. However stainless would be better, just more expensive.
Yes I think you're right. It was run only sporadically for years. Most use has been over the last year or two, and then, only about 3 days of solid running.
Alex, As a past life lifeboat servicing engineer I would suggest you don't use stainless for your exhaust it would have to be 316 and with the galvanic reaction and the brittleness with vibration from fixed ends not so good. If you buy a heavier wall mild steel pipe and several cans of VHT Flame Proof ceramic paint and spray some into a tin and pour inside, spray the outside then use thin sheet silicone taped over the pipe before the heat wrap. You can buy or make spring loaded "flappy things" to help reduce trailing sea wash. Good Luck
Thanks Bruce. The quotes I have for 316 throughout, with flexi sections to reduce vibrations, aren't too bad compared to cheaper stainless or even mild. I think by the time I've used specialist treatments for mild steel, silicone wraps etc, the finances would be similar. It's a dry exhaust, so I'm not so concerned about galvanic corrosion. It'll be isolated from other metals.
Dear alex they have double wall exhaust pipe so no need to wrap it and it would be safe to touch and add heat!

The engineer I employed has a long list of great Royal Navy Warships; HMS London, destroyer, HMS Blake, cruiser, HMS Bristol, destroyer, HMS Fearless, LPD, HMS Nottingham, destroyer. 2022? he now works on *Alan,* a watercraft that looks like an orange colored "Minion" from the movies doing the backstroke.

Take proper advice before using stainless steel for marine exhausts. I am not an expert, but have had problems with stainless exhausts on yachts, admittedly with water cooled exhausts not dry exhausts like Alan.
My understanding is that Stainless Steel is only stainless in the presence of oxygen, and very much dislikes chloride ions and sulphide ions, which lead to crevice corrosion, especially around welds.
In the exhaust of a hard working diesel engine there is not much oxygen and quite a few sulphide ions. Plenty of chloride ions in salt water also..
There may be a grade of stainless that will work well, coupled with proper pickling after welding, but do check, not just assume that stainless will be better..
Yes I encountered the various SS grades early on in the project. The data I saw suggested that 316 may lose 0.1mm/yr if immersed in water with these ions present, and with oxygen absent. 304 loses 0.2-1mm/yr, which would be a problem for a wet exhaust. A dry exhaust won't be immersed in ion rich water, and will have exposure to oxygen.
Rather like galvanic corrosion, stainless steel bolts in mild steel plate will cause a major reaction when immersed, but very little drama if mostly dry.
Bad news about this exhaust, but hey, so much the better that it gets there, well, just one piece of advice, all in stainless steel, they make this siphon for the... land prepared, if not for the rest of the piping, well, go see some guys who do tuning, they will surely have cheap addresses, you will surely be able to do the collector in ceramic treatment, courage, good luck!!!

Go with at least 304 stainless pipes not 409, which could be tempting due to the price. If I were around your area I would gladly weld it up for you for free, but alas I’m not there often. Then think about coating the exhaust before wrapping, like the equivalent of POR15 high temp coating. Coating the internals would be good but cumbersome.
For the price difference get 316 and never worry. Just make sure your welder only uses 316 rods. Spend the couple of extra bucks and get/ make 316 flanges.
Those wraps will wreck a Jeep exhaust too.

I'd recommend a high temperature exhaust enamel header paint as a base layer but it outgasses with a lethal smelling smoke as it cures. Not safe for a boat's cabin.
Exhaust wrap is staggeringly hydrophilic. It could end sea level rise.
Period Triumph and BSA motorbikes had the same problem with wrapped exhausts. Looks nice but hides a plethora of issues !
I haven't had any problems with wrapping stainless. I installed standard glass fibre exhaust wrap on my trials car about 15 years ago. The headers get covered in mud and water and I have see no evidence of corrosion. The steel O2 sensor bung in the exhaust is completely rusted away. Admittedly this is not salt water.
Glad you were able to find the issue. Do you think that the cowling is a little to complex if you need to access the engine in a hurry in extreme conditions? I also never really got a good perspective of just how much space was inside of Alan, it was an interesting angle from the stern there. Do you plan on changing the exhaust outlet or will that flappy thing be ok?

The panels come off in seconds - so there's access. 15mins was for the entire disassembly.

What was the name of your expert him - I may be a contemporary? BTW I would replace the exhaust with mild steel, well painted and the snazzy lagging - much cheaper and likely to last for your ownership/10 years.
SS isn't too pricey. If it were 10x the cost I'd be tempted to agree.
yep, not a lot of exhaust pipe shops in the Arctic. Any thought of double walled? Being a land lubber I was just curious.
Can't see many double wall ones on the market. I think a well considered lagging will suffice.
can I live on that sometimes, keep an eye on it for you, shame not to use it all the time and just when you want to use it.
I will buy the fuel, have you fitted a shower in it, very handy as people get smelly quick inside airtight vessels :-(

For the love of God please put a carbon monoxide/co2 detector.. Or 3. O and stainless steel bellow style flex joints are way better and don't leak, allso pack a few packs of Holts gun gum or similar to repair any leaks on your travels... Even the best stainless steel can randomly break because the universe is harsh... Mount the detectors low down btw
