Great video! I really appreciate the authentic, real life details. Planning descents were the biggest challenge for me when I transitioned to higher performance aeroplanes.
Ooh, some cheeky seatbelt fashion going on there ;-)
I'd fly with you Jon. Good job. Your honest vids are much appreciated by many.
Bienvenue en France monsieur le reportaire volant !
Love the real life detail. Just subscribed. I'm a 73yr old PPL student.
Nice videos, hug from Portugal
Another great clip, Jon. Always wanted to visit Andorra to 'tick off' another tiny state (joining Luxy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Hutt River Province, etc). Didn't know that the field was actually in Spain! Used to listen to Radio Andorra as a youngster in the UK as they had a huge MW transmitter. They actually hosted Radio Caroline for a while in the late 60's.
Now there's something I didn't know.
Nice to see Perpignan on one of your video ! I was born there and I've done my PPL at this airport !
The sight of the Canigou mount in the background during briefing brings back a lot of memories !
Very nice video, thank you !
Very high pressure environment! Cool video. I do find it very interesting how pilots and controllers alike are so eager to talk quickly when talking to someone with a different native language. So many incidents have occurred over the years due to poor communication between controllers and ATC with different native languages. One would expect them to speak slightly slower, and more concise, when in these situations. Allow more time to speak to each other.
Great video. Very educational, excellent guidance on the student. Thank you for sharing worts and all. It helps us all to be safer pilots.
Great vid Jon. James looked a little tense but it must have been great to have your calm assuredness next to him, and sharing the workload was no doubt a great help. Easy to see how it was possible to misinterpret the "report final" as a landing clearance with all the chat going on.
Landing clearances are not given at La Seu airport. Basically it's a flight information service that reports wind and traffic conditions, but all actions shall be done at PIC discretion. The flight information zone is active when commercial flights are scheduled (usually weekends) and a NOTAM is issued for that. Even with the FIZ active, it remains as a class G airspace, but 2 way radio comm and active flight plan are mandatory for operating within the zone. I use to fly over that airport often and monitor the radio, and I've never heard such a busy chatter, with 100% of comms in English😅
Brilliant video Jon and well done James! … Think I will give this route ago in the summer 👍👨✈️✈️
Great stuff Jon! Another very interesting and enjoyable vid to watch 👌👏👏👏
Thanks Kev
Excellent video and what a cool relaxed CRI you are
Thank you. You know how to butter me up!
ERROR - in the event of a crash P1's head would hit the column or panel. The diagona belt is not there for decoration.
Nice video but - shoulder strap!
Thought you mentored your fellow pilot very well - he was obviously pretty nervous and on a couple of occasions getting close to brain-limit as we all can at times - but you kept on top of things and gave good quiet advice. Descents from higher altitudes are always hard to do - I use a 4nm per 1000' which at 500fpm tends to work well enough in my 182 as a rule of thumb. The GTN also has a VNAV function which is excellent if a bit fiddly, but I'm not sure if the 430 has that too? One final thing: amazed that your rotation speed was 75 knots! Maybe that's an Arrow thing? The 182 is off the ground at 55 or less!
Haha, at 9:40 that's my 'local' ski resort, it's called Les Angles, it's not huge but it's a nice place, lovely spa in the center.
Love to do this one day. Great thorough, safe flying. Keep em coming.
Nice scenery, nice flight
Very interesting. Have done a fair bit of gliding along the Pyrenees west of here, so nice to see a different perspective.
Another interesting airport to visit in the mountains is Sabadell (LELL) with a similar descent profile at 485feet MSL. 20Km from Barcelona and a great place to visit.
Ah, cool - See it on the charts during my travels.
Sabadell is one of the busiest airports in Spain. Although only VFR flights can operate there, there are lots of flight schools departing and arriving, and also at the traffic pattern for touch and goes. At rush hour, the radio chatter is really interesting..
Amazing views, Jon.
Great video Jon, beautiful approach!!! Reminded me of flying into Kathmandu 😂
I've just hiked through Andorra. I think the main reason there isn't an airport there isn't the size... The terrain is pretty crazy! Really fun hiking there though❤
Wow!!!! 👍
Great stuff, spectacular views. Oh and don't worry, Jon, we all have brain fog!! Keith
I’m not usually that forgetful, promise.
Very good - looks like somewhere I’d like to take Yankee Sierra some calm day..
You should Andy. Quite an experience.
You seem pretty nervous John. You appeared to make hard work of that. Not someone I would like to be sat next to me I think.
Someone else flying his plane…..😮
James doesn't seem to know how to put on the seat belt!
If you can, have a look at the approaches into Banja Luka or Sarajevo.

Interesting that Perpignan is still a home for abandoned airliners. It used to be home for old Caravelles and Vanguards.
I personally fly the same aircraft and the speed on extended final at 80 knots is too slow for me. I never go below 100 knots. I rather have more speed than not enough especially in a mountain area that you might experience downdrafts.
Dan Gryder a CZcamsr Stateside who promotes safety and flies his own DC-3 recommends for any GA 1.41xVs on final until short final. That is what I use in my Archer. He also recommends marking up the ASI with a thin piece of sticky tape as a reminder. Done that also for the fully loaded 1.41xVs which he calls the minimum manoeuvring speed. Enjoyed the video.
Vs0 is 57.5, so 80 knots essentially gives you a 1.4 margin. On a hot summers day landing in Andorra your 100 knots indicated is going to be getting on for 110 knots true. Coming down finals at that speed in a light SEP doesn't sound safer to me.
@@fpt9694 hi I checked and found the V speed to use is Vs so have edited my reply. Obviously giving an extra % of safety in the circuit and into final
Hi Jon, given that you have a turbo, are you considering getting oxygen?
Not at the moment Sheldon.
It didn’t take long to pick up on the shoulder harness ! Unprofessional!

Çok hata yapıyor dikkatsiz uçuyorsunuz eğitmensiz uçmayın çok tehlıkeli durumdasınız.
Extraordinary.
I am sorry, but quite appalling crew coordination, the pilot flying was been flown by the pilot not flying, the PNF is even controlling the throttle. sorry guys but you need much more training, especially in situational awareness, an accident waiting to happen. Btw, I am a 17000 hr pilot, if you are wondering. Also, the aircraft is unpressurized, ROD was quite high, not good.
What’s ROD?
That is really not how to instruct.
Confused constantly talking and fiddling with the controls.
No apparent separation of tasks
P1 clearly put off by the chat and interventions.
I hope your instructional technique has improved
It’s interesting and concerning at the same time when the ATC talks in a different language than the Pilot. ATC responds to you in English but if you don’t understand French in this situation you have no idea what’s going around you.
I train pilots in French radiotelephony… I’m available for English speakers who’d like to master the basics.
Did we meet in La Rochelle, or was that another franglais teacher?
@@TheFlyingReporter Nope not me... I'm just further south in Arcachon LFCH
@@theflyingfrog a Pig and a Frog watching the same video. Who'd have thought it!
@@The_Flying_Pig brilliant! 🐸 🐷
Who is in control and who is flying? On the cusp of spooking the pilot flying into believing everything he does is a mistake which is not the point of a CRI rating. And nothing James did was dangerous. The shallow layer of "politeness" makes this all seem quite bland but I bet it wasn't. Adding insult you look at your notes after touch down and say "well done that was very good" as though you were a gifted instructor taking a green student on a first cross country, having criticised almost everything PIC did. But hey, maybe James enjoyed your constant criticism.
Did have a similar thought but wouldn't have put it in such strong language. It's important to let people make mistakes when learning or building confidence. Otherwise very nice video, thanks
Agreed! He’s such a nervous pilot and in this particular situation he transfers all of his personal doubt onto the pilot. Not an instructor so shut up and let the PIC fly the plane.
@@philandrews5686 I hate to say it as I'm a big fan of the channel but that last 50 feet was hard to watch. Let the man relax and fly the plane! Poor guy is so on edge an unbriefed 2000ft stop climb completely task saturates him.
Jon is an instructor, and he is clearly being a good instructor, helping out a nervous pilot in gaining more confidence. I feel that if Jon was sat there doing nothing and not pointing out very small mistakes, then there is no point in him being there and I think James would’ve felt uncomfortable that maybe Jon feels he can’t tell me something.
I agree with your comments. I guess the guy flying was a qualified pilot? So as PIC let him BE PIC and wait for him to check his own progress. The mix of messy communication and unnecessary petty instruction in the cockpit, especially on landing, was quite worrying to watch. If it'd been me flying I'd have handed control over to Jon way before landing and told him to get on with it.
