- Despite being held at home to a draw by Romania, England move to the brink of qualifying for the 1986 World Cup in September 1985 at Wembley. Glenn Hoddle gives England the lead, before Rodion Camataru levels despite protests from Peter Shilton of handball (not the last time in this World Cup campaign he would have such a complaint after a goal he conceded!). Youngster Gheorghe Hagi catches the eye by twice hitting the woodwork for Romania, who miss out on qualifying as they finish behind England and Northern Ireland.
Romania always had a great team. What's happened? Haven't seen a decent Romanian team in ages? C'mon we need you back. Always great games with England. Hagi the Maradona of the Carpathians., class player

Romania U21 - England U21 , 4-2 , in the recent Euro 2019 , held in Italy , one goal of Ianis Hagi (now playing for Glasgow Rangers) , the son of the father ,Gheorghe Hagi ... looks like we are coming back step by step in the top of the european football (i predict a new great national team of Romania again in maxim 2 - 3 years from now on... for world cup 2022 or Euro 2024 ... i expect great things from our national team ( a great U21 in the present)
Once in while I come here to watch and hear Hagi hitting the crossbar..I've had that sound in my mind since I was a kid and watched this game live on TV..

That's a nice way of putting it.
The less nice (and also far more truthful way of putting it) is that England and NIR had a friendly draw in the last match. If any of them (England or NIR) had won that match, Romania would've qualified alongside the winner.
But then again... there's a reason we call it "the perfidious Albion"...
I hope one day England will need Romania to win a match so they can also qualify and Romania will do a friendly draw in that last match and leave England out. Pretty much like Denmark and Sweden did to Italy in 2004 :)
England had already qualified - Northern Ireland needed to win or draw to join them.
A lot of eyebrows were raised at the subsequent goalless draw, though Pat Jennings did have to make an amazing late save from Kerry Dixon to get the point.
We choose to play open at Bucharest with N Ireland for victory, and they caught us twice. Also, a Soerensen referee that we could never forget him. But...if we choose to make a draw with them... then... England must gave them the victory...because N ireland didn t have enough to qualify.. Sadly, we lost at Bucharest... due to our lack of experience . . .
England's goal at the end was legit. There was no offside.

The big difference between old times with Hagi, Camataru, Dan Popescu, Gica Popescu and this times with fucking no name players are the money. Romania lost the game with North Ireland 0-1 on Oct 16, 1985 at Bucharest. They needed at least a draw to qualify for Mexico 1986 tournement.

In that game lost at Bucharest, Romania had if I am not wrong 16 corners and dominated total northern Ireland but they scored then friendly game with England and went together arm in arm at world cup. Such a shame Romania had a very good team who could offer infinite more than north irland at world cup.

Firma de echipament și atunci ca și acum avea un anumit model de echipament. Lung a aparat cu acest echipament in acest meci in 85’ iar Duckadam începea campania câștigătoare cu Steaua , CCE 85-85 in toamna lui 85’ in același model de echipament. Naționala ,Steaua,Craiova,Rapid,Oradea,Argeș etc.erau îmbrăcate de Adidas, Dinamo,Victoria,Flacăra Moreni, Bacău erau îmbrăcate de Puma. Aceste firme echipa tot sportul românesc in anii 80’ 90. Sa mai afli un aspect, culorile Stelei erau roșu și albastru iar la finala cu Barcelona a fost singura data cind au jucat in alb.

Eu am văzut meciul in direct in 85’,doua bare plus gol. Golul lui Cami a fost preluare pe piept nu henț ,iar la golul englezilor a fost offside . Fi și tu patriot ce dracu. Ai văzut Danemarca-România 2-2 preeliminarii cm 2002 Japonia și Coreea de sud dacă nu l-ai văzut t-il recomand sa vezi acolo furăciune ,Steaua-Napoli 3-3, cupa uefa acolo furăciune .

La offside e greu, regula era diferita atunci, pe linie era offside, dar am pus stop cadru si clar picioarele si trunchiul aparatorului erau mai aproape de poarta, deci pare NO offside. Totusi capul lui Barnes si mana stanga erau in fata si par cam pe linie cu capul si mana aparatorului, asa ca nu stiu ce ar dicta VARu :)). Una peste alta, pozitia aparatorului mi s-a mai aproape de poarta deci imi mentin parerea ca NU a fost offside.

1. Camataru a preluat cu mana, Shilton a avut dreptate. Golul lui Barnes a fost valabil, nu a fost offside, a venit din urma.
