I’ve learned that many home owners/renters who have an attic or a basement (*), will NEVER go there AT ALL… not even to have a look around to learn if the space might be useful in some way…
I would not be able to live in a house that has a space that I (nor anyone else in my family/household) have ever seen or entered…!!
THAT would drive me crazy, giving me all sorts of weird anxiety about someone living in my home without me knowing about their existence, or the space being use by criminals or whatever crazy thing will come to mind…..!!
And if the space is ‘creepy’, I just bring multiple flashlights and some defense weapons (we don’t have firearms like in the 2nd AM in my country).
But I’m probably more worried about spiders, spiderwebs, mice or other nasty creatures living there.
I had a crawling space in one of the houses I lived, that was very large and people could actually stand up straight when in it.
The entrance was like a ‘normal’ crawling space though: About the size of a doormat.
But we just lowered a small stepladder in it, I put on my white ‘hazmat’-suit incl mask (I’m not having bugs creeping into my mouth!!Brrrr)
IT TURNED OUT THIS SPACE WAS ALMOST LIKE A BASEMENT!
IT WAS HUGE, STRETCHED OUT UNDER MORE THAN HALF OF THE HOUSE AND FROM THERE IT BECAME THE LOW HEIGHT OF A REGULAR CRAWLING SPACE AGAIN..!!
They previous owner even had connected multiple electrical wires and had placed outlets/lamps throughout the space!
And yes, there were quite a lot of spiderwebs, but mostly ‘dust webs’, hardly any bugs and I never saw (or heard) a mouse, rat or other rodent in that large space.
So the space was build good, no holes or cracks where all kind of unwanted ‘visitors’ could crawl through and it was not moldy either!!!
Perfect BIG extra storage space!! ALWAYS WELCOME!
Imagine being too scared to ever check your property (or if your renting: part of the place where you (and perhaps your kids) close your eyes every single night……..never knowing what IS behing THAT DOOR…….??!!??!!!!! 👻
(*) that is not in use, not as storage nor as an extra room and that isn’t easily visible (too dark or things inside blocking view) or easy accessible…
