One thing that doesn't get mentioned enough about this band is the rhythm section, whether it's Leslie, Fred, or Bernie on bass. Fred and Dave lay down a classic Muses groove on this one.

"My mouth is full of demons
    I swear to God".
My favourite songwriter in the world. Disturbing subject matter though, Ellen West suffered from anorexia and killed herself with poison.

I need to go to bed
I need to go to sleep
    I need that hope chest
    I need it to breathe
Throwing Muses were there to help me through tough times.

I love "The Real Ramona" it has a very strange production, almost Page-ish with backwards guitars and vocals and all kinds of weird stuff you need headphones to hear. The guitars are oustanding, as are the songs. And they still rock, as of 2014, just saw them for my birthday. Thanks Hilary!

when they first appeared in the 1980's they were described as "pop/rock music for the 21st century" by the UK music paper Melody Maker .
At that time (1987/89) I don't think the USA got them . But in the UK they soon attracted a huge following along with the Pixies . The first time I saw the latter they were the support for the muses.

This is a great rock track by a a band that were years ahead of their time
Saw them many times in the 1980's and 1990's. The Pixies were the support on one of the tours.

Possibly one of the best opening lines to a song ever.

One of the great American bands of any era.
Nearly 30 years on they still sound fresh and anything but dated

House Tornado, always always. And Sleater-Kinney learned a bit from them, as did Olympia. Rat Girl is some of the story.

House Tornado is a tremendous album . Bought it when it came out . Made me realise how good TM were.

It's clear - to me - years later that the drumming was such a vital compliment to the guitars. My god, where are the bands like this? I don't say that as someone waning for back in the day, but truly, for their time, and for their genre - brilliant

Throwing Muses are one of my fav bands from the "rock and roll years" (54/present) . I loved a description from Melody maker about them from the late 80's "pop music for the 21st century"
ps great music still exits . I 'll give you a precis of some of my current fav bands/artists and fav tracks
Low - Nothing but heart, Amethyst,
LP - lost on you , Muddy Walters,
      The Kills - Black tar
      Daughter - to belong
      Bat for lashes- Close encounters,
      London Grammar- If you wait
and right up to date from my current fav album from 2018
First Aid kit - rebel heart
"great music lives has lived and will live " (KWB 1989)

the drumming was vital and was mentioned in contemporary album reviews (and live reviews too)

Music lives in 2018 . Belly and Breeders have released new albums . But bands like Low, The Kills, Daughter , London Grammar , Wolf Alice (listen to Giant peach), The national , First Aid kit, bat for lashes, PJ harvey etc
fly the flag for modern music

The Muses were so great with Tanya on lead guitar. I saw them live that very year (1991) and believe me I'll never forget this performance.

Throwing Muses so talented in so many ways. I really enjoy watching David on the drums, most Muses songs have multiple tempo changes. And Tanya is really wicked Hot!
