  • first of all, if you're getting this code, take your time and cover off and check timing! p0340 DTC can actually be a timing issue and not a circuit fault!
the Ford 4.6 Triton is a very simple engine but has misleading error messages such as this one.
I really Hope this video helps. I cannot find anything like this online and only ran into one other person that had had the same issue where the wrong camshaft sprocket or cam phaser was installed.
I did this this job 2 years ago at night and did not notice a difference in camshaft sprockets.
years later I am gearing up to sell the truck and trying to clear all trouble codes me to troubleshoot this issue.
1)I started with replacing the alternator because I knew it was old and wanted to get a high output anyways.
    2) rechecked the new alternator for any AC current leaking pass the diodes by probing with in multimeter.
    3) checked all the wiring from the camshaft sensors to the PCM for Open or shorted wires.
    4) replaced all sensors with OEM, cam and crank sensors from the dealership
    5) went online and then discovered that the electrical circuit fault could not actually be electrical related and could be timing so rechecked timing
    6) upon checking timing, I noticed that the cams were out of sync leaving me to replace The timing chain tensioners and noticing that the cam sprockets were worn replacing them as well.
    7) went to install the new cam sprockets and noticed the difference in the old camshaft sprocket that I put on and the new one. I picked it from the dealership.
I'm sure some of you might be wondering, but this whole time I came and crank sensors showed im sync, I was getting readings that my cam sensor was working and crank sensor were working, everything else was in the normal range and this was the only trouble code I was getting.
