    Wow, Miro, that was a quiet bombshell you threw in there towards the end. I cried for the young Miro who endured the bullying. Although the p-word is over for most, it is a glaring reality for me due to my chronic illness. Although, I sometimes miss the "evil twin" from when you had short hair, I have come back time and again to your channel because of your passion and desire to share your knowledge and experiences. Plus, you're funny. Rick Hanson talks about "marinating in the good" because as humans we are wired to focus on the negative for survival.. A double whammy when we are hard on ourselves to begin with. So I hope that you too will marinate in all the love from your subscribers. Even though this is a parasocial relationship, I hope you know how much you are appreciated and look forward to any content you put out in the future.

I have seen many videos where covid activated auto-imune illnesses in some people and I really think everyone should be aware of the effects. Thank you for all the wonderful words

    During the pandy I started watching every plant channel I could find. Today, I only watch 2 or 3 regularly, and yours is one of them. I appreciate your honesty, your knowledge and your straight talk. There have been times when I've been completely overwhelmed by my plants, and have definitely let some go. Knowing that it is something that happens to a lot of us makes it a little bit easier to accept, and I would absolutely appreciate any advice or tips on getting through.
    And eff those idiots who bullied you 😡

      Awww that is such a compliment! I totally get being overwhelmed by plants and needing to let some of them go. I often get comments on some plants I had 2 years ago, "Can we get an update on this plant?" and I am like... "She gooooone."😅

    In desperation, I ended up using hot water treatment for my entire Hoya collection to treat the root mealybugs. It worked amazingly well. I was very surprised. I did not actually use a sous vide as I did not have one at the time. My tap water runs about 122 degrees F. I put each plant in another matching small container without drain holes and filled it with the hot water. Thermometer was used to confirm that root ball was getting to at least 118. after about 7 minutes I replaced the water as it would cool down some. Then topped off with more hot water. After treatment, I ran cold tap water through plant and placed it back in its pot. I rinsed the crap out of the holding container with hot water so I could use it again on another plant. Using this method, and treating about 8 plants at a time, I was able to treat the entire collection of 150 plants in a day. And it worked. I did follow up with nematodes, and stratiolaelaps. All plants are now in very clear pots so I can assess easier long term.

    I first saw you on IG as I was just beginning to delve into the world of hoyas, quite by accident when a highly variegated carnosa rooted cutting caught my attention at the local garden center. I have always been a plant enthusiast and I’ve tried cultivating many different plants, but never hoyas. Well, I rapidly became very curious about hoyas especially when I discovered they are from the part of the world where I grew up (but no longer live there) and I never encountered them when I was there! Long story short, I’ve been binge-watching your videos. They are very informative AND entertaining. I love your generosity in sharing your knowledge. For mealies, I’ve soaked my plants in warm water with soap and neem oil. Cleaned the roots thoroughly and just dunked the whole plant, leaves and all, and left them for a while. my rhipsalis red coral had some damage after the treatment, but so far, so good 👌

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  Před 11 měsíci

      In case of root mealybugs, they have developed water-reppelent membranes that makes anything that dissolves in water difficult to effectively kill them and it is hard to penetrate the egg sacks on the roots. I know that many articles suggest neem oil, but from many growers that has been found to be least successful. Systemic insecticides are also not effective as the roots absorb them slowly and are not stored in the roots (which root mealybug attacks). The easisest and fastest method for me at least has been to re-root the plant (and then throw away the potting mix and take great care at sanitizing the pot or discard it as well).

    Miro, you’re right about soil mealies. I ‘behead’ and re-root them. Imidicloprid (a neonicotinoid) is pretty effective as a preventative and works ok on a tiny infestation. I also keep them on their own saucers to prevent spread. Also, when I have a wilted plant or leaf, I soak it in warm water until it perks up. It increases success in rooting.

    Transfering from pon to mix of soil, bark, perlite -just use half of pon the plant was already in and othrr half can be coco peat for example, mix it but around hoya roots that were developed in pon leave little bit more pon then soil and just leave it, new soil adapted roots will grow and plant will start to grow in one month (how I know this -I rooted lots of hoya in pon and that was very wrong choice for my conditions (just in room, not terarium or grow tent, and with my non watering habits 😅) and for some hoyas too that just dont like beeing in pon, so I had to trasfer them in soil bark pon mix... There are 2 types of humidifiers: ultrasonic & evaporative. I HAD a Levoit with the 6 litre water tank and NEVER AGAIN! The Levoit is ultrasonic, that means that everything in the water tank comes out in the mist, which is the water and everything dissolved in it. The mist settles on all surfaces and leaves a white dust everywhere - all furniture, plant leaves, everything in the cupboards etc. etc. To avoid this you need to use distilled or other very pure water. Well, purchasing 6 litres of distilled water everyday is just out of the question.
    So I got rid of the Levoit, and got a Smartmi Rainforest humidifier which is an evaporative humidifier. The is no mist, and hence no white dust! This humidifier can take tap water - it evaporates just the water and not what is in it, you just need to clean it monthly with citric acid.
    Oh, I think that in the question about vaporizer, they were referring to a handheld mister to spray your plants.

    What substrate do you use for your African violets? You have a very pleasant voice!

    I'm sorry that you were bullied. If I was your age and high school I would be friends with you. I understand that where you live there is probably no people of color 😂 regardless I would still be your friend.

    Love your videos. Also love your African violets. I hope you find a life partner. Life can be lonely but plants and pets help
