- Thank you to our SUPER alpha patron Cora for this groovy request. I never know what I'm getting when I get a Joe Cocker track and man, this was so rockin'. The crowd was digging it. So many damn back up singers... the piano was fantastic too. Great live performance once again from this intriguing dude.

The one and only Leon Russell on piano!
glad you caught it
Leon Russel on piano. He’s iconic. Not only has he had great songs but he wrote great songs that others recorded.
Bobby Keys on sax. He accompanied the Stones on many an occasion
Damn, I am so lucky that I was able to see Leon Russell before he passed away.
Always love seeing Leon Russell & Joe Crocker. Play together 💕
This version is from the album Mad Dogs and Englishmen.
It’s an amazing live album.
Leon Russell is the piano player and musical arranger and band leader.
There’s a great story and the album, check it out, you will not be disappointed.
That’s the one and only Leon Russell on piano. RIP LR🌹
I always have thought that Leon Russell's arrangement of this song for Joe Cocker was a) much better than the original and b) better than With a Little Help From My Friends, which gets a lot more attention. The studio version has a great acapella section with the backup singers and Joe.
And also the brilliant Leon Russell
Leon on piano is so cool
Joe doing "You can leave your Hat on!" Class act!
Nice reaction, The piano player, Leon Russell is another rabbit hole you should go down.
Totally agree. Leon Russell is often overlooked and underrated. I saw Leon at the Fillmore East, same bill with Elton John. Leon knocked me out, much better show than Elton imo. Still one of my all-time favorite entertainers
@@pinkstarphoenix6182 Elton John says without a Leon there never would have been an Elton.
Leon Russell was a member of the Wrecking Crew, played be4hind dozens of hits as a studio musician in LA. He organized and produced this tour, and it shows in the near wall of sound mix he does live. Great stuff.
what a pairing, Cocker and Russell
The Boxtops' original classic version was a radio hit and a big iconic song for the service guys in Vietnam, like my brother.
Oh man, do I long for those years, those songs, those bands, and those people. And when I felt great.
The passion during this performance is off the charts!! The band/choir is phenomenal. And of course, Joe left a piece of himself on stage, as usual. Great, great performance.
Joe was set to tour the US a few months after Woodstock. His band fell apart, and Leon pulled this gang together. There is a documentary film of this tour, each of the songs are encores from different shows so every one of them is on fire. The original song (The Letter) was the shortest ever #1 Hit in the US. It's worth your 2 minutes to listen to it.
Joe Cocker was epic. Saw him three times in different eras. From Woodstock to
"You can leave your hat on". I loved his "She came in through the bathroom Window".
.Harder to find but a favorite. Leon Russell had the blue hat on.
The late Bobby Keys on sax. He played with so many legends. The Stones, John Lennon, George Harrison, BB King, Dr. John, Clapton and others.
Leon Russell and Joe 🥰🥰🥰🥰 Joe Cocker always gave you everything he had . Leon just the coolest his song A Song for You is just gorgeous
Joe was the pure definition of "COOL". That VOICE!
Leon Russell plays piano and also known for his top hat!
Technology has erased creativity by creating so many one man bands.
Leon is acting cool like that because he was the boss of that tour. Tremendous talent
Yeah he fucking rocks. Cool as a cucumber.
Legendary "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour--really took a toll on Joe. Great live album from the tour--everyone had it.
Also love Cocker's version of "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window". Leon Russell was my late husband's favorite and mine too. He's worth a look. Blessings from Washington State
Ridiculously large band and yet it works so great. Everyone here was such great talents.
"I'm gonna to make you play piano like Leon Russell, like Liberace, like St. John the Apostle" - Bob Dylan's song My Own Version Of You. Leon Russell has inspired many including Elton John. One of the greatest piano session players, and multi instrumentalists all the way back to the 1950s. He played for the greatests artists in Rock history throughout his lifetime. Leon did some albums himself as well, Tight Rope, Lady Blue and A Song For You being his notable songs. Tight Rope was played on constant rotation in the early 70s on AM and FM radio, I know I heard it all the time.
Leon Russell put this band together. Leon arranged everything. Piano player is Leon Russell. Leon is from Tulsa. Both drummers are from Tulsa. The bass player is Carl Radle, who became Eric Clapton's bass player on many of his iconic songs is from Tulsa, also. Look up Leon Russell and be amazed with the influence he had, from the wrecking crew to writing important songs, (Masquerade, Superstar, Song For You, ect.) Look at the bios on the two drummers here. Just those two guys alone, played with so many people and on so many recordings, it's unbelievable. Great drummers from Tulsa include, Jamie Oldaker, Jimmy Karstein, Jim Keltner, David Teegarden, Chuck Blackwell to name a few. Keltner was the drummer on Traveling Wilburys.
❤️ LOVE JOE COCKER AND ❤️LEON RUSSELL on piano. Leon is well worth checking out as well!!!
Leon Russell, The Master of Space and Time
I was in grade school but I know all these songs! Gratitude! Leon Russell is a multi-generational and genre genius!
Always here for Joe and Leon Russell. Great song, great piano playing by Leon Russell, the Master of Space and Time, RIP ❤
Leon Russell also had a featured spot during George Harrison's 1971 benefit "Concert for Bangladesh" (with Bob Dylan and others) -- which is almost impossible to find nowadays on DVD.
This is from the Mad Digs and Englishmen Tour, headed by Joe Cocker and Leon Russell. Leon ran the musical arrangements and was the pianist in yhe video. He was called "Master of Space and Time" on the tour. Legendary tour with 40-45 musicians, girlfriends etc. invluded on the tour. 2 Dominos in the band, Carl Radle on bass + Jim Gordon on drums.
Classic double LP that rocks. Try "Delta Lady", written for Rita Coolidge, "Space Captain" or any track. Leon Russell was in the 'Wtecking Crew' btw.
Great song, great vocals! The first time I ever heard him, I thought it was Ray Charles 🤣! Next, check out his Beatles cover of She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, originally released in 69. ✌️
An incredible cover of an amazing song, first recorded by The Box Tops in 1967, the greatest song to be just under two minutes
This song was originally done by The Boxtops in the 60s. Lead singer, Alex Chilton was the lead singer at 16 years old. He sounded like he was 45 - much like Steve Winwood when he was with Spencer Davis Group and 16 around the same time - and amazing. He went on to be in the power pop band Big Star. I don't think you've done any power pop, but definitely need to, especially the band The Beatles mentored, and even sang with and wrote for (Badfinger). The most tragic story in all off rock. Also, a really tight band, and great singers, songwriters, etc. They were on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album. Another must-hear. In any case, The Replacements, pioneers in alt music in late 80s, previously a punk band, name-checked Alex with a song called Alex Chilton. Damn, I'm all over the place. Sorry. I think I'm gonna become your resident music trivia nerd. Lol!
All right by me. Please tell more.
( Badfinger.... Oh yeah😎✌️
I think Lee would like Badfinger!@@marigoldgardener8678
That's the Late Great Leon Russell on the Piano
Two great drummers. Gordon and Keltner.
Bobby Keys sax of iconic Brown Sugar solo and many Stones collaborations
Joe Cocker does do the best version of this song !
Leon Russell singing Jumping Jack Flash/Young Blood at The Concert For Bangladesh is rocking.
The Box Top version is really good too.
Leon Russel on piano. He put together the band for the tour, for Cocker. You oughtta check him out, as well.
Remember the face (and hair because he is often wearing dark sunglasses) of the piano player. You'll see Leon Russell in a lot of other places. I didn't notice Rita Coolidge in the video, but as part of keeping track of who hung out with who she married Kris Kristofferson a few year later.
Carl Radle later went on to join Derek and the Dominoes with Eric Clapton. That band put out one studio album which was epic and included "Layla" and "Bell Bottom Blues" which are HIGHLY recommended.
Ok, Leon is also the epitome of cool 😆
Box Top's original version was a hit and very good, also. Joe and Leon and this traveling circus made it their own, too (there's a movie about this tour, too).
On keys is the great LEON RUSSELL. Check out some of his solo stuff!
Leon Russel is the calm circus master in the middle of the happy mayhem
He really is. Stone cold cool the entire time lol
I think the first I heard of Joe Cocker was when "The Letter" was on the radio
I got to see Leon in Gainesville,Fl back in the 90's and itvwas avgreat show. Glad I got to see him.
Saw Joe and Leon, live at the Shady Grove Music Fair In 70 or 71. Really can't remember, so many great shows Balto. D. C region, lots of weed and acid💙✌️😎. After listening to you, It was that same tour in 1970
The definitive cover. The Box Tops had the hit with this. It's a great AM pop song, you should check it out.
Mad Dogs And Englishmen is such an awesome
Film… this whole tour with all these people was an incredible tour. Leon Russell brings such a strong musical presence and is the mastermind here… yes he’s the super cool dude laying down that piano. He is the man!
Leon Russell, on piano, was the bandleader.
Feeling Alright! Great live performance
The musicians you listed were for the studio version. Leon Russell was the piano player for this live event.
Yeah I mentioned him at the end. I was looking at the studio list at first lol 😆
I knew you would get to the Mad Dog and Englishman. Wonderful. Great part of this band was all the backup singers - Rita always standing with Claudia Linnear (the inspration for the Stone's Brown Sugar). You still need to do Woodstock - Cocker's Help from My Friends video - that will bring you full circle with Joe Cocker.
Hey, Drummer. I like your reactions to the music I heard fresh growing up. I’m 68. My oldest sister had all the Beatle albums Linda R, Gordon Lightfoot, Moody Blues, John Lennon and a few more. The middle child-sister brought the fresh music of EltonJohn, Bonnie R, Bruce S, Joni Mitchell, and a few more. A friend gave me the Joe Coker, MadDogs and Englishmen which I loved it. I bought more Joe Coker and Leon Russel albums. It gives me great good vibes that you like it so much. My best friend had the new Woodstock album and his friend was a Jimi Hendrix fan.
I can relate to how crucial those older sisters were for getting turned onto new music back then. My buddy’s older sister brought in some albums once when she saw us listening to our 45’s - Hendrix, Cream, & Traffic ! As for my older sister, all the best early 70’s albums were given to her by her suitors to score points and I wound up playing them more than her.
You need to know the original, by the Box Tops, to appreciate Joe Cocker's. The dude in the hat is Leon Russell. Might be Bobby Keys on sax? Before listening to Cocker's versions of Beatles stuff, KNOW the originals by heart. "Cry Me A River" is a standard. Also watch Joe Cocker on SNL with John Belushi.
i saw the movie documentary "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" changed my whole perspective on music
You are correct , There were so many bands and artists in the 60s and 70s it was Insane ! I hate that that's over with !
"You can leave your hat on" is another Joe that is a must.....imho!!
Im 62 now. Brother had tbe 45 rpm and the Mad Dogs and Englishman lp, too.
Was my favorite song when it came out.. still in my top faves.
I pop the cd in petty often.
The Box Tops had a good radio hit with it. Of course, Joe's cover is great. Don't know what to recommend to introduce Leon Russell. Maybe, "Tight Rope".
We all led a peaceful rocking life back then🤘❤️life was fun
The ‘Mad Dogs & Englishmen’ album and tour was a non-stop party, New Orleans style. Really fun.
You are damn well right. That was awesome. The song was a big hit for the box tops. In 1967 I believe and what cocker did with this song as great as it was and as much as a hit, it was for the box tops. What cocker did was awesome. And that's just the same as what he did with a little help from my friends, by The Beatles, I think seeing the Woodstock version of him doing that. The same thing is what happened with the original version with Ringo taking the vocal lead, but Cocker can take a song and cover it like no one else. Well, maybe with the exception of Linda Ronstadt, because she covered tons of songs, but she made them great.
Leon put this whole thing together! everybody who was anybody wanted him ...
Great comments to wind up with, Lee. And yes there is still so much we can watch you discover! Thanks for this video - and do check out Leon Russell and also One of the singers Nicole Barclay - I’m guessing she’s Nicky Barclay from an early all-girl band Fanny, well worth a listen.
A uniquely great voice .
This is from the MAGNIFICENT Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour film!!! MUST SEE!!! As important as Woodstock or Monterey Pop!
That sax was Bobby Keys a mainstay of the Rolling Stones peak years!
Also see Leon steal the show in George Harrison’s groundbreaking CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH box set n film!
(U can bet it’s on Peter Jackson’s list to restore!
Please play some Leon Russell.
Masquerade, Lady Blue, Tightrope and so many more.
Joe cocker had the rare talent of taking other peoples songs and vastly improving them .
An amazing performer live and one of the very best at doing cover songs along with Vanilla Fudge!
The record. Mad dogs and Englishmen. From the Fillmore East.
I have been blessed with being able to see Leon Russell live, truly a historical figure in music, him and Joe cocker are superb.
Leon on that slightly-out-of-tune Tin Pan Piano with Joe's raspy lead, the solid brass, and epic chorus made this The Highwater Mark for THE LETTER. Mid-sixties to early seventies we had a ton of bands, but there was a Multimedia Renaissance in the '80s ('79-'90) - London, NYC and LA (at one point 5,000 artists/week were moving into LA County) and there were some crappy acts, but there was also a ton of good stuff - even some sixties groups had major comebacks and made their best recordings in the '80s.
The Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour was put together by Leon Russell when Cocker toured the States. A few of the band were members of Cocker's original band, the rest were members of Delaney and Bonnie's band. I saw the Mad Dogs tour when they hit Columbus, it was an incredible concert. Jim Price and Bobby Keys went on to record and tour with The Stones for years. A lot of members of the band went on to join Eric Clapton on the Derek and the Dominos album. Delaney and Bonnie and Friends are a very underrated and influential band. Their friends included Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Eric Clapton, Dave Mason (from Traffic), George Harrison and Duane Allman (from the Allman Brothers Band). I'd love to see some Delaney and Bonnie reactions (try Things Get Better from their Live on Tour With Eric Clapton album). Amazing!
this is a radio show with Delaney/Bonnie and friend Duane Allman.

Written by one of my dad’s closest friends, the great Wayne Carson. The Boxtops did not cowrite it. They just recorded it first. He went by the name Wayne Carson Thompson in those days.
When Joe Cocker gets onto a tune, the original is redundant.
My man Joe with Leon on the keys. What a pair to draw to Bro! Ambassador Jenks
.Not hard to get likes when you play records this good. >grin
Bobby Keys on Sax, another person on a million albums.
What a line-up. All great musicians
Just do a quick look at the artists Leon Russell played with/on recordings. It stretches from the greatest of the vocal era in the 50's through the best of the 2000's. A very unrecognized, underappreciated talent. You should look at some of Leon's work, worth your time.....
Just a heads. up.... that's Leon Russell on the piano. Kurt from Maine
For a Modern take on this version of "The Letter" , find The Tedeschi-Trucks band's version , I believe it's from the "Gathering of the Vibes" festival. They do a killer version of it . 🙂
Mad Dogs and Englishmen!
I’ve never seen Leon Russell when he was younger. And the only thing that comes to mind when I look at him here, is it he looks like a character Johnny Depp would play, lol.
Leon Russell on piano.
The brass section here has major ties to the Rolling Stones. Bobby Keys, who played the sax solo, would basically become a defacto member of the group. Jim Price, the trumpeter, was also instrumental with them in the early 1970s. Even Jim Horn plays on some of their stuff.
I went to college in Tulsa where Leon Russell lived. When I saw George Harrison in Tulsa, Leon Russell made an appearance. George's voice was shot and ragged but this was my first Beatle in Concert so it meant a lot.
That was a great pick for video/song. We both love seeing the crowd getting into it, and they were!
Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.
Saw Joe, he always but on a great show
Leon Russell!!!
Jesus, what a band!
Yeah, that's a real line up right there lol
