Penn State University - 5 Things to Avoid

  • www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/5-... - Penn State is a popular campus, often a dream school for students. The housing authorities know this and run with it. Be prepared to be pissed off by the ridiculousness of apartment searching and the price tag that may come with it. In October of my freshman year, my friends and I had to prepare our hunt for next year’s habitat. The climax of this came with an all-nighter, camping out on Beaver Street in front of the housing office in line with hundreds of others to snag a spot. This was a stress filled night, one of manipulation and bribery as many tried to use different tactics to get a better place in line.

The parts about losing focus and not taking advantage of clubs and opportunities are spot on. If I had a chance to do it all over again, those would be my #1 and #2 things I would do differently.

#1 - I lived on campus until my Senior year and in my Sophomore year was able to score a great dorm in West where I was close to most of my classes.
#2 - I rode my bike EVERYWHERE and took the bus to get home - DO NOT own a car unless you live OFF campus and have a reserved parking spot.
#3 - Avoiding "Losing Focus" is part of life and shouldn't be on this list. Honestly, there are a MILLION things to do and lose focus on wherever you go to college.
#4 - Settling for Professors - often you do not have a choice, especially if you're in a hyper-focused major with limited options. BUT - in your Freshman year, you MIGHT be able to transfer.
#5 - Avoid NOT avoiding clubs and activities? - weird, but agreed. Everyone should stay active, join some clubs, or an IM team. It keeps you moving and meet people in areas outside your major.

Mostly good advice. But I had a car as an upperclassman on campus and it was really not big deal.

Finding housing is never a problem. I’m a sophomore, and I’ve been able to get what I want pretty easily. I walk pretty much everywhere and use the bus occasionally and everything is easy to use. Most importantly, I don’t lose focus, because I know as an out of state student I have to dedicate most of my time to academics. Most people I know are extremely focused with academics and have above a 3.5.

Fifty years ago the graduate assistant accents were also an issue....i did NOT TAKE CALCULUS in high school and also nearly failed out in my first year because of a chineese TA who could not SPEAK clearly.....sad to hear that the administration has not yet gotten a handle on this issue....

Seriously, what did you major in? I'm a junior and I already have 3 conditional job offers, conditional on timely graduation. Penn State alums and networking are doing me wonders.

Depending on what major you went for, some career fields you may love, may not be in demand currently. Compared to people with Engineering, Economics, and Nursing.
