90 Degrees - Different ways to weld square tubing

  • Today, a short video where you can see how to connect steel square pipes in various interesting ways.
To calculate other sizes of joins, you need to do a calculation. For example, square tube with 70mm sidewall.
    70mm - 2mm (one wall thickness) = 68mm
On the website for calculating formulas, we are looking for a formula to check the circumference of a circle.
Where "r" we enter 68mm, which will give us a circle circumference of 427mm.
    427/4 = approx 107 mm
    107mm + 2mm (wall thickness) = 109mm.
Thanks to this, we know that the length of the side cut will be 109 mm.

Cool trick! The round edge is a lot of work to cut, but the double V is nice and quick and looks so much better than a simple 90°. Neat!

I've had to make radiused corners on box section projects a couple of times, and I found it a lot less hassle to use steel the same gauge as the tubes wall thickness, then turn it up discs of to the desired diameter, and chop them into 1/4's and weld those in as corner pieces between pipes cut to 90', before capping the outer radius with some rolled steel strips.
As an exercise in accurately marking out, cutting and welding, doing the curve from one piece is fun personal challenge, but if you need to accurately get 4 of them perfectly placed on each of 10 lengths of tube to make 10 shelf frames that are all perfectly square, visually identical, and looked mass produced, I'd say making the corners separately and welding them on is the way to go. :D

That is cool. One could use a jig. Depending on where you live box steel is pretty much all standard sizes. A person could make half a dozen jigs and then use either a torch or plasma cutter to cut out the section. The jig could clamp on and off set based on you plasma cutter off set and then you could cut them out fast. This would also allow someone to make a square with a whole piece as well.
Though your idea is pretty awesome as well!

If one was doing this a lot. I would make a jig for the each size that you might use. This way you could use a torch to cut it out or even a plasma cutter. Now for those people who have a CNC plasma cutter a simple jig made for your table and some set up would work wonders for this as well. You would only need to make 2 small cuts.
