  • Today at Badgerworks, we continue our series of videos that have spun off from an upcoming diorama build. In this one, we look at how to simulate a tiled floor effect for the floor of our diorama.

    I made a black and white tiled floor for a 00 scale building yesterday, by drawing and colouring in on a sticky label.
    Yours makes my effort look like it was done at primary school level!🤣🤣🤣

      Hey, whatever works. As long as you get the look you want, it doesn't matter how you got there :-)

    I've done similar to this, in the past, when modelling flagstones - I used an old 'Harris' nylon wallpaper edge roller to get the plastic flat on to the backing. Pointless on wallpaper, really, but great on this - almost nothing sticks to nylon.
    A lovely result, there, which made me think of the Greenwich foot tunnel, for some reason. Nice one.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  Před 4 lety

      Yes, I couldn't find my J roller anywhere, so I picked up a cheap one today while I was out :-)

    Had a similar problem; similarly, used card and scribed lines to replicate wooden plank floorboards, then washed as you did. Nice!

    That worked a treat. I give it 99/100. (you lost a mark for not waiting another 3 mins for the spray glue to set a bit more!)

      But then I wouldn't have been able to get the tile out to fit the drain... ;-)

    Yes on both accounts....I enjoyed it and found it helpful. Such a simple concept but with a realistic result....bet it didn't cost ten pounds! Will be looking to see what transpires with the diorama to come.

    Nice little project.
    Maybe for the spaces between the tiles, using a panel line ingraver

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  Před 4 lety

      You certainly could do it like that, but I think it might be a bit narrow at this scale.

    Today we have this... *flat piece of wood
    Aha! It's going to be a scratch build vid... nice.
    That's really great work. Nice finish on it - kinda looks like what you'd find on the wall in a rough pubs mens room... I hope your dio isn't the inside of a rough pubs mens room. :D
    I got some of that Humbrol matt varnish both as a rattle can and in a bottle; it's got a slight satin sheen to it, but it's the most matt of all the matt varnishes I've tried yet. Nice recommend. Great vid thanks for sharing.

    It's great to see you doing these type of tutorials, maybe next on the list, brick walls? I have an idea for a diorama after watching the movie Uprising (2001), to dipict the fight scene of inside the sewer tunnels, I've not seen any about, so could be a nice thing to do.

    A great video. Looking forward to the dio.
    I find when measuring odd numbers (12s 15s 18s etc) out writing down beforehand the intervals helps me make sure I mark them as right

    I was thinking to form the tiles, heat up a metal screen mesh with a hair dryer or something and press it into the plastic until plastic is solid again to give the tiles a beveled look.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  Před 4 lety +2

      That would work, but in all honesty at this scale I wonder how much it would affect the look.

  • @ianthomson9363
    @ianthomson9363 Před 4 lety +1

    It looks very realistic. I'm trying to guess what the diorama will be- we know it's 1/35 so there'll probably be a military vehicle of some sort, and with this tiled floor and the scabby concrete wall I'm getting thoughts of Cold War Soviet things. I'm probably completely wrong and there'll be an X-wing or something in there!

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  Před 4 lety

      Good guess. I wonder if you're right...? ;-)

    Wouldn't it be easier to cut the plasticard a bit oversize, stick the MDF to it, then trim the card off around the edges rather than having to line it up so carefully with wet glue?

    Seriously, looks like the wet rooms we have here.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  Před 4 lety

      If your wet room looks like how this ends up, you'll need more than a plumber to sort it out... :-)
