Blood is a first-person shooter video game developed by Monolith Productions and published by GT Interactive Software. The shareware version was released for the PC on March 5, 1997, while the full version was released on May 31, 1997 in North America, and June 20, 1997 in Europe.
The game follows the story of Caleb, an undead early 20th century gunfighter seeking revenge against the dark god Tchernobog. It features a number of occult and horror themes. Blood includes large amounts of graphic violence, a large arsenal of weapons ranging from the standard to the bizarre, and numerous enemies and bosses.
The Blood franchise was continued with two official expansion packs titled Plasma Pak (developed by Monolith)[1] and Cryptic Passage (developed by Sunstorm Interactive). A sequel titled Blood II: The Chosen was released on October 31, 1998. The game was released on GOG.com along with its two expansion packs on April 22, 2010, utilizing the DOSBox emulator to run on modern systems.[2] It was released on Steam on July 14, 2014. - Hry

When your previous reviews said this game was brutal, you weren't kidding. Enemies hitscan and have almost telepathic reflexes (playing on max difficulty). I got through Shadow Warrior Classic Redux just fine, but wow is Blood on a league of its own. Secrets are cleverly hidden, levels are varied and the Build engine physics are well used.
What’s good with you not doing Conflict Vietnam? There’s even a part where you fight with the Aussies
Night Dive Studios is also trying to get the rights for No One Lives Forever, so that the series can get the remaster treatment.
I thought they tried and failed previously. Are they at it again? Instant Buy of NOLF and NOLF 2, if they can bring us back Kate Archer and H.A.R.M.
...Yeees...
...YES...
*...YES!!...*
I hope they fix the water glitch for pcs.
Is that recent? Cause, AFAIK, it was cancelled partly due to Activision couldn't figure out whether they have its rights or not, yet asked for a hefty price while showing no official ownership documents.
@@CyberClu That's right. They been trying to get the rights for years now. The last update is when they talked about how they got new leads, and that some things weren't true about who had the right and what not. Watch "GOG: Preserving Gaming's Past & Future" on CZcams. At around 20:20 is when they talk about No One Lives Forever.
Someone needs to give Blood the Doom 2016 treatment
I completely agree
Nahhhh, doom & doom 2 as much as I love them, were limited. Blood Is perfect. I love the agameplay and artstyle
Doesn't need it. Its already god
@@tulipanmartzals8280 the original is perfect, if anything I'd want them to make a real sequel using the build engine and original assets, but getting Stefan Weyte to do new lines and adding a new soundtrack in the old style. Almost like a new expansion pack like Sigil for Doom but multiple episodes not just one. I mean we recently got a new Build engine game with Ion Fury so I don't think it's a totally unrealistic option. I know we have the mod Deathwish for Blood but I still want more. Although I wouldn't turn down a well done doom 2016 style remake.
Or just remaking the levels on the Serious Engine
I bought this game summer of ‘97, right before my sophomore year of high school. I’d been saving every penny I got my hands on for a car but when this came out, the car fund became my temporary game fund. Such is life.
What a hectic, creative, stone-cold classic.
I think the best thing about BLOOD (to me anyways) is that the environments are so damn realistic. Maybe not so interactive, but you really feel you're in these places. Not many shooters can do that, especially with this tech.
But all Build Engine shooters do this.
@@Bembel81 Don't get me wrong I love Duke Nukem 3D, but I don't get the same feel. I mean, I do sometimes admittedly, like that magazine shop in the second(?) level, but I don't feel that often enough to really classify the game with that. I haven't played enough Shadow Warrior so idk in that case. I'm not saying you're wrong, I just think BLOOD does it just- perfectly.
Ikr, atleast blood don't have bad episode like lunar apocalypse
Oh shoot what’s up man
Blood is definitely my favorite Build engine game. I love the gothic 1920s setting and all the pop culture and horror references. And that double barrel shotgun, the best in the biz.

BloodGDX has been out for a while now
This is better than BloodGDX. Mouselook feels better, jumping feels better, and you can increase the FOV. Additionally, it doesn't require Java, which is a security risk.
@@matternicuss But it isn't though? This version has way less gameplay accuracy, in pretty much every aspect, AI behaviour included. A lot of stuff is ridiculous for how bad it is, and on top of all this, lots of bugs too. I'm not even exaggerating, I've been playing this all day without any expectation and boy if I was disappointed. Just stick to BloodGDX or NBlood until a proper remaster that uses the original source code and the original engine comes out. You'll have a way more convincing experience, trust me.
@@MemoxWasHere You know absolutely nothing.
My respects to BloodGDX, but it's still an imitation of the game, a reverse-engineered Alpha version. This remaster is the real thing.

@@tss1473 ROTT is on Wolf 3D engine/idTech 0
The best Built game is Ion Fury then Blood, then Shadow Warrior, then Duke Nukem 3D. The other games were rather mediocre, because they're not pushing the engine in any way and get tedious really fast. The best thing about these games were secrets, humor, cheesy horror gore, fancy weapons that are rare in today's shooters. Ion Fury really took all these features serious and turned them up to 11. When you make a game on a very limited engine you need to focus on other qualities of the game like level design, interesting enemies, weapons, power ups and create a character that is not another boring ass marine, GI without voice or distinct characteristics. That's why indie developers choose retro stylistics, because they are not taking part in a race for the best graphics and they have to work on things that make the game fun, replayable, memorable and make it a cult classic.
Damn that Enhancements list is huge: Vulkan, 4K, unlocked framerates, modding support, co-op, etc etc...

You are very misinformed here, it does not use the original source code AT ALL, Nightdive could not afford the asking price for it which Atari wanted just like Jace Hall couldn't. The game was being made with nightdive's in-house Kex engine, it's essentially a remake with original resources.
What a scam. How the fuck can Atari even be part of this release if they refuse to give access to the original source code in the first place. LMAO!
@@meanmole3212 Could it be that Atari, um, owns the IP?
I've relistened to his comments starting at 9:17 and although on first listen it sounds like Fresh Supply uses the official final source code, what he's actually saying is that GDX and nBlood is based on the Blood alpha code and FS uses the KEX engine and probably taking elements from the alpha code. In other words the final source code for Blood 1.21 is still not available and all these ports are trying to be faithful recreations to which I am very thankful.
Jace Hall did have the source code and wanted to bring Blood back before NightDive, but he couldn't afford the rights to using it. It's a shame since he was one of the original team members and the project leader for Blood, not to mention founder of Monolith.
he never says it uses the source code, though? He says IN THE VIDEO that it uses the Kex engine.
A simultaneous celebration and parody of horror movies and tropes, the first game from one of the finest FPS developers ever, and one that truly deserved to LIVE...AGAIN.
How did you physically make a video this quickly
agreement with Nightdive Studio or GOG I guess
To be fair, Gman has a very predictable script, and goes for a "what I thunk" more than a "review." He's not judging anything on any objective standard, he's simply giving his editorial. This allows for a much faster writing and drafting process, and thus expedites his video making.
I'm not calling our Gman here a pretend critic. I'd never say that, since I don't know the guy. I'd just suggest that if you want someone's opinion on a game, Civvie11 does a much better job on that front, and he doesn't call his 2 cents "reviews."
@@Xanthosking I don't think that's something to give Gman slack for, he kinda seems aware of it's simple but down the earth reviewing style. Also, even though I love a deep detailed mass of commentary, there's no such thing as a perfect review method so, at the end of the day any reviewer is just giving their 2 cents anyway.

Edit- and here I am in the future after he posted his 9 minute or so video talking about how much was wrong with the port. But at least they're working on it.
He's still got Cryptic Passage. He did the main game on GDX and Post Mortem on NBlood. So his last Pro Blood video could be a mini review on Fresh Supply at the same time.

I'm actually surprised about the backlash from all the "true fans", pointing out "inaccuracies" like different colors and stuff. And they are so angry! I have played through the whole game several times, both original and various ports. Blood: Fresh Supply plays exactly like original, and some differences here and there are due to this actually being a remake rather than just a remaster. Have you noticed the logo after Nightdive Studios?
A couple of recommendations for playing on "well done/extra crispy": 1) presume you're playing
Thief: Dark Project. Change your style to that of the oldschool Garrett. 2) Treat encounters against cultists as a "puzzle", while against other enemy types as "combat". For example, in order to pass
those packed train cars on "extra crispy", i used the closing doors both as a cover, and to
block/redirect enemy dynamite. Venturing an attack in a fraction of a second before those doors
close. That is a correct solution. If you lose a lot of HP - then either you tried to solve the puzzle incorrectly (the former), or your playstyle is far from Garrett (latter). Restart puzzle, think harder, - improvise or die. This game has nothing to do with constant quicksaves. 3) Master your pitchfork, master your dynamite. The opposition can always be outsmarted. But it's edge-of-your-seat thrills.
Thanks for the tips

God I was in jr high when this first came out, I was absolutely obsessed with it! The game was so dark and creepy and even funny it was done just right.
They should get the source code to blood 2 and give it the daikatana 1.3 treatment
I'd love to see that happen. Blood 2 is one game that is rather intriguing, but it's sad to see how it was rushed. A ground-up remake would be so awesome.
I want to make this clear. Nightdive did NOT use the original source code. It was reverse engineered by eye. In fact there are NUMEROUS inaccuracies that long term fans will notice however the new casual players will not. It’s a decent remaster but the accuracy is maybe at 75%. I still highly recommend this due to accessibility and modern netcode. The ports NBlood and BloodGDX are 100% accurate WITH enhancements. I just want this to be clear before people go around praising this game. It’s okay if you like it. Just know that it’s not accurate. Don’t be ignorant to that fact. Thumbs up so people can see.
Does theese inaccuracies hurt gameplay in any meningful way?
saaaaaaaaadasda Yes there is an opening in E1M2. Because of the new collision detection when you throw TNT it explodes on an invisible wall. New casual players will think that is how Blood worked but it’s not. It’s an error of the remaster. Also the enemy AI is very different. I can traverse original levels without taking damage but not anymore because enemies behave differently. I’ll have to re-learn the new AI. They also use the wrong sound effects for enemies. Cultist never screamed “help!” in the original Blood. Also you will notice when firing the shotgun the screen jerks downward. This did not happen in Blood. Also one of my original maps crashes on startup but not in Blood. 💁🏻♂️ This captures the feel of Blood but I want people to be aware of what they are buying and saying. There’s a lot to like about this remaster. But this is not the definitive Blood.
@@Spill_Eviction Sad thing is, WB is supposedly have the source code, but i guess they ask a pretty big amount of cash, which Nightdive obliviously doesn't have.
@@Spill_Eviction I don't know if you've seen the Civvie 11 video but he dives into relatively the same points that you've made here. Sure the game's accessible but there's a lot of bugs present too such as him mentioning lighting bugs and the run glitch hindering the ability for Cultists to throw dynamite. There's tonnes of niche stuff they've missed out on but I'm sure they're trying to correct the issues brought up by the community. I'm honestly hoping, because I want to get into Blood how it was intended but without the hassle of setting up the ports and having to pick and choose between which features I want (NBlood has better mouse-aim while BloodGDX has other features that I can't bring to mind at the moment).

Okay but uhm.... what about the bugs n glitches that hold the game back a bit?
The most annoying one is that the quicksave hangs just enough to be frustrating.
@@VGamingJunkie i got hit with the worst one of all. Where the audio hangs onto one soundbite until I close the game out.
Ouch, I never experienced that one.
@@VGamingJunkie It isnt common, I was just unlucky enough for my headphones to murder my hearing.
RIP the good times.
Shut the fuck up undertale
I have been waiting for this remaster since i discover your channel in 2014.
2019 has been a great year for nostalgia.
I might get this for one reason and one reason alone: CUSTOM DIFFICULTY
To be able to play this enemy count on maximum, enemy health lower than usual, but with minimal tweaking to everything else sounds like a ridiculously fun time, as I have a tendency to like guns to feel really deadly, but have enemy counts and damage output keep me on my toes.
Haven't played Blood before, but I've been keeping an eye on it, just in case.
EDIT: Fuck it, bought it anyway. Ten bucks, so why not?
IT EXISTS IN BLOOD GDX
Went to go buy this just to get a -50 off coupon for being the owner of the original. Thanks NightDive
Thank you for this great honest professional review . Had not played this game since I played the shareware version . Keep up the good work .
its crazy i just rewatched you're original blood review and was wondering when they'd make this finally it has arrived
Man you really rushed out this review huh ? can you atleast do a comment explaining that the game is quite broke and if it has any change on your initial review ?
A few minor bugs aside, I have to agree this is the definitive way to play Blood today, especially for those who haven't played this gem before. It's never felt smoother
dr4kz0r lol I wish I was getting paid!
But seriously I haven't experienced as many of the bugs as some folks have. Worse offenders are minor graphical glitches. Still, I hope they fix it for everyone because this has so much potential! It's not 100% accurate to the original, but then again that's what Dosbox is for. All I wanted was a (slightly) modernized version of an awesome game, which is what this is... well, when it works at least. Sucks some people have to wait, but Nightdive has a pretty good track record for fixing bugs from what I understand
Wow I didn't even know this was a thing! Awesome to hear and great review as usual!
I’m new to Blood (missed that generation of shooters as a kid) and lemme say that the boomers are right to praise this game. It’s fucking FUN and that’s all I care about.
Dynamic lighting would be a nice feature :) But i'm glad it's finally back on track.
Caleb's laugh is pure win in this game.
I played this on Lightly Broiled as a kid, now I always play it on Well Done.
you're my favorite game reviewer, been watching your stuff for about 5 years lol, always keep up the good work mate
Always wanted to play Blood, but never knew what version to get. Figured I might as well wait when I heard Nightdive was on it. Expected it to take much longer for them to deliver, and I'm glad they did it well. Looking forward to finally playing it, because I love the other Build Engine games I've played a lot.
The second I saw this on steam I knew this would come out today
*Good old Games
Fixed that for you.
(Don't get butthurt, I just feel GOG is better for these games, plus no DRM or always online and you can download it and put it on a disc and play it just like the original even.)
@@Sacremas No hard feelings man the fact that it's out at all is a fucking blessing
@@Sacremas - most people want to own all their games in one place on Steam
@@laputanmachine2965 Amen to that brother!
@@Terf1988 I know, I was like that for a while, I only really got into GOG when I was gifted a copy of Witcher 3 there, logged in and suddenly it transferred all my Steam library titles that GOG also had into my account and started gifting me a bunch of other games... yeah, m'kay, I'm sold then lol, you're allowed to buy me off.
I bought it as soon I saw it on GOG. Half off because I already own the original? Count me in. Keep'em coming Night Dive Studios.
Great narration though the video post, GmanLives! Blood may be old, but it is still fun to this day!
what a coincidence, i was trying to find out when this was gonna come out and now i know with a proper review too! good shit dude!
I've never caught a vid this early!
GmanLives, I've followed you for years, and I think you are an exceptionally great reviewer. However, while it pains me to say it, this video was almost as poorly thought out as your fistful of frags video, considering it came out before the patch which fixed a lot of issues. I know you hate that review now, but this one is possibly even worse with the damage it could have caused.
It's great that some other other well known reviewers took the time to really notice and talk about all the bad parts of the game, which nightdive then took to fixing, but imagine if you were the only one? It's likely people would have just taken your word for it and accepted this as an acceptable product, which, at the time of the review, it hardly was.
I'm not trying to shit talk you and put you down, but I do feel this video was a bit of a strong fuck up and a bit of a disservice to the legacy of blood for you to not even notice the numerous bugs and glitches and stuff. To deny literally everyone else saying the same thing is a bit concerning, since you're usually a little more level headed about this sort of stuff.
Please don't take this as an attack, but I know that you can do better than this.
LMAO what a baby. you need a diaper and a bottle while you're at it?
Thanks, I waited for this remaster!
Why did 1K not like this video? This is a hidden gem like Battlezone 1 from the turn of century.
On launch it had some bugs and I got roasted for not covering them.
@@Gggmanlives It had an EXTREMELY noticeable amount of bugs and you got roasted for completely ignoring them.
The statements "There's really no reason for me to not recommend this thing." and "I can't think of anything worthwhile to complain about." particularly contrast against the large amount of bugs it launched with (and still retains in some cases).
@@SmogginMog is this version of the game still worth buying in your opinion?
if not, what’s the best way to play Blood?
Did you say malakas at the beginning of the video (at 0:26 to be precise) ?
Μήπως είπε malarkeys?
@@demollyon και το malarkey προέρχεται από το μαλακια με βάση τη βικιπαίδεια
@Nikos papadopoylos as far as I know, there are a lot Greeks living Australia, so it's possible that it's a mainstream swear word there, used instead of asshole.
I find it funny that not a single person left a comment about the bugs until civvie made his video
its almost like people took a joke too seriously and have no critiques of their own
There are multiple videos showcasing the bugs.
Because many people were too hype when it's just came out, they don't even care about the bugs/inacurracies.
Also you can really trust Civvie when it comes to Blood shits.

Check that video and its upload date out.

But hey, funnily enough, the only day-one helpful negative review of this remaster was also getting hate until Civvie made the quick look(?) so you do have a point.
13:50 I like how Gman head icon fits on Caleb body like a poorly made photoshop. Nice touch, good editing
I got the email from GOG at work this morning on my phone and i screamed!! Finally we got a remaster of this gem!
Wait,
Its out ALREADY?!
I know
Mama FUCKIN' Mia
I need this wicked SHIET PUMPING through my veins, STAT
And it really does show considering all the bugs in the game. I'd wait for patches if you haven't bought the game and played it for 2 hours.
It's also 50% off atm on GOG if you already have the Whole Unit.
50% off on steam too if your own Whole Unit
Got it for little over 1€ on steam sale, looked so awesome from your review, cant wait to try it out! :)
This is awesome! Now, hopefully we’ll see ports for handheld! Good thing there’s no more messing around with dosbox and config files!
I won't celebrate this as much, because I played BloodGDX a lot and this remaster should have been done ages ago. But hey, good for anyone new, bring as many players to experience this classic, the creme de la creme of 90's shooters, feels nice.
Now we just need Blood 3/Blood Remake.
PS: It's Stephan Weyte, not Steven, SHEIT
I really like your relationship with the studio and this obvious shilling. Great video, hack.
Really cool vid. I can really hear your love for the game. I bought this immediately.
That voodoo doll weapon is fucking badass. Loved the review. This has gone on my ever-growing list of mustplay games.
Wish my PC didn't break so I could play the remaster. Used to play it all the time. Easily one if the best FPS games ever. If this got a PS4 version (which is extremely unlikely) I would be the happiest man on the planet.
Look, man, I like your content - I really, really, really do. But wasn't this just a tiny bit rushed? The port is completely full of bugs, and the crippling speed at which you released this video kind of proves that you were...working VERY quickly to release this. Again, I like your content a lot, but the fact that there are so many bugs which are completely glossed over here...it's...not great. The port needs more time in the oven, and I think that your review needed some more time too.
At least you get the original DOS version bundled in with fresh supply.
Not rushed, I had access to the game for weeks before it went public. I spent 20+ hours playing it. The video is not rushed at all.
@@Gggmanlives This port still has issues that even the sourceports don't have.
The "sourceports" were worked on for years before they got to that point.
@@Gggmanlives Fair point. I do think they should have taken their time with this release, though.
@@Gggmanlives That does not make sense. This is a commercial product (which is not being sold as an early access game, by the way) and it should be as ready and as playable as possible on release. The original source code was confirmed to exist but Atari did not allow to publish it, and now Atari is behind this release. No excuses.
If the product is not ready and has issues, as an pre-release reviewer, you should state those issues clearly. You said you "can't think anything worthwhile to complain about". Is that being honest? For me and many other people the game has many distinguishable differences compared to original game along with some clear bugs and crashes on some occasions. Figuring those out should not take 20+ hours.
I am not saying the game is bad by any means, but it sure as hell is not perfect or ideal remaster for Blood and that should be made clear in this review.
About bloody time!
Finally a proper remaster of the original code. Blood is still one of my all-time favourite FPS games - right up there with Doom and Unreal Tournament. I love how the younger gamers keep complaining that it's too hard - yeah that's because it's an old-school 90s game. When games were REAL games - tough and demanding. Bloody brilliant!
Been waiting what feels a lifetime for this to happen glad I didn't have to wait long for the review.
Can we just remaster all the classics please, I'm always down for that.
*THEY DID IT, THE ABSOLUTE MADMEN DID IT!* (Also, yes, I've already bought it).
may actually have to get this remaster. i hope there's no issues.
Fastest purchase OF MY LIFE!!!! Had the steam coupon in my inventory. I'll buy it again for the 3rd time! Tempt me with good games and I won't hesitate! (I own the orginal DOS games)
The most excellent part of this game was the sound and horror segment it brought in the 90s. It was the first horror game I played back in 1994 and it was just so awesome. I still have it saved somewhere in my disk in old dos format and so glad to see this in the steam store today. Loving it all the details even further. :)
All Hail BloodGDX
Monolith must merge with with the creators of "Alien Isolation" to make a new Alien vs Predator game!
Because so far? Monolith made the best AvP game from the early 2000´s.
And there other games were also pretty damn good.
this morning i saw this video uploaded and immediately bought this game
thanks for being the one to let me know it was out :^)
(also, is it just me or were the gibs... messier back in DOS?)
