    Metroid Prime is a first-person action-adventure video game developed by Retro Studios and Nintendo for the GameCube video game console. It was released in North America on November 17, 2002, and in Japan and Europe the following year. Metroid Prime is the fifth main installment in the Metroid series, and the first Metroid game to use 3D computer graphics. Because exploration takes precedence over combat, Nintendo classifies the game as a first-person adventure rather than a first-person shooter. On the same day as its North American release, Nintendo also released the Game Boy Advance game Metroid Fusion, marking the return of the Metroid series after an eight-year hiatus following Super Metroid (1994).
    Metroid Prime is the first of the three-part Prime storyline, which takes place between the original Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus. Like previous games in the series, Metroid Prime has a science fiction setting in which players control the bounty hunter Samus Aran. The story follows Samus as she battles the Space Pirates and their biological experiments on the planet Tallon IV. The game was a collaboration between Retro's staff in Austin, Texas, and Japanese Nintendo employees, including producer Shigeru Miyamoto, who suggested the project after visiting Retro's headquarters in 2000.
    The game garnered critical praise and commercial success, selling more than a million units in North America alone. It won a number of Game of the Year awards, and it is considered by many critics and gamers to be one of the greatest video games ever made, remaining one of the highest-rated games on Metacritic. In 2009, an enhanced version was released for the Wii as a standalone game in Japan, and as part of the Metroid Prime Trilogy compilation internationally.

    Seeing and hearing people still speak highly of Metroid Prime warms my heart. I will never forget that moment when arriving at Tallon IV after the escape sequece of the frigate for the first time, I started to notice a distinct sound in the background that filled my curiosity bar...... It was a remixed tune of Brinstar from the NES Metroid..... A tidal wave of nostalgia hit me so hard as I recognised the tune immediately. I stood there for a few minutes in awe appreciating the tune while taking in the atmosphere and grasping how amazing it was to look up to the sky while watching rain drops fall onto Samus' visor.
    It was bliss. One of my most cherised gaming memories.

      RabidChasebot, Like I said before man, hunt for and stock up on powerbombs and you can kill them easily. There’s only 3 places you can encounter them, In the Phazon Mines Metroid tunnel (sorry I can’t remember the exact name), the place where you fought the Omega Pirate (after you kill it), and the Impact Crater, which is where you’ll encounter them the most. One of the big things that I can agree with Miyamoto was that he did not like MP being called a first person shooter game. • @LOUDcarBOMB
      @LOUDcarBOMB Před 4 lety +35

      From what I've heard and read, a lot of Metroid fans did not think like you and thought very differently. A lot of the fanbase was worried that it would turn into another FPS and trying to cash in on the Halo craze so much so that the first showing of the MP trailer was booed massively. When the game came out everyone was so surprised that the game is so excellent that for a lot of reviewers, it was their favorite game of the year and probably of all time. It surprised me to read all of this since I love the game so much, and reading that people were fearful and nervous of MP being a bad FPS puzzled me as well.

    • @LOUDcarBOMB
      @LOUDcarBOMB Před 4 lety +1

      @Christopher Simon I've only read about this since I had dial-up Internet (didn't know of gaming forums and of E3/etc.) and no cable/satellite TV in the early 2000s. When MP got revealed at E3 2001, there was a serious amount of booing of it (I can understand why when seeing the first trailer) and it was designed as a 3rd person shooter ala Other M. A serious amount of people in forums thought Ninty was cashing in on the craze of Halo 1, Quake, Doom, etc. and ruining Metroid by making it a FPS (though it's more accurate to say first person adventure with shooting).

    • @LOUDcarBOMB
      @LOUDcarBOMB Před 4 lety +2

      When it got released, everyone was extremely surprised at how amazing of a game it is and didn't take any big trendy FPS elements of the time. People took back the bad stuff they said about Metroid Prime and replaced it holy praise when they got to play it. Gggman showed it really impressively (for any and all games) ranks in in the Top 15 Best Rated Metacritic Games by Metascore and Userscore of All Time.

    The amount of thought that went into the lore and scannable items is amazing. Detailed images of enemies and their anatomy and the writing that went into their scans was so cool to me. Made it seem so believable. The dev team must have had researched so much actual biological and physiological things for inspiration. I forgot what it's called but the codex where all your scans are saved for future reference is simply gold. That, plus all the great little details made this game so enjoyable and never feel stale or boring.
    PS, another cool detail: when you rapid fire the power beam for more than about 5 seconds and then stop, you see haze come off the tip of the blaster from the heat of firing so many shots in rapid succession. Brilliant.

For BoTW , I think it's just preference. I love that and OoT for different reasons. Ocarina is more focused and has better storytelling, but BoTW exploration and gameplay are way more fun. But I'm hoping the next Metroid can make a leap like they did with BoTW to where it feels super fresh but still like the same series at its roots.

    Metroid on the NES was the game that made me WANT to game. Just seeing it in the Nintendo commercials, something about it drew me to it, and when my uncle finally bought an NES, Metroid was one of the games he bought with it. I was obsessed. Back in the day I played it so much that for years and years I could complete a run in under 2.5 hours and get the "best ending". I think I actually pre-ordered Super Metroid, meaning I went to the game store in the mall and plunked down 50-60$ or whatever months in advance for them to hold a copy for me when it released. I love Metroid, and the Prime series was...well, I love it now, but back then it was difficult to accept the difference between the seemingly perfect side scroller/adventure and a FPS. Nintendo/Retro did a fantastic job, though, and your video has made me start scouring eBay for some copies of the trilogy so I can fire up the ol' emulator and give them a go. Thanks!

    Something really cool about the soundtrack of this game, and the other primes aswell, the original metroid's soundtrack was supposed to be filled with songs that "sounded like an alien creature." The prime games did this perfectly. You will hear sound effects in some of the songs that sound like something the boss or the environment should make. In prime 2 there is a boss called Quadraxis, a big robot, and his battle theme begins with an electronic synth noise while the rythm sounds like metal banging against each other. Stuff like that is prevalent throughout the entire trilogys soundtrack.

Just finished it: turns out he thought the game was "overhyped trash" on every level with a terrible control scheme, repettive gameplay and boring enviroments and music and way too easy all around. He also claims the graphics were overhyped for years with 1 or 2 decent effects at best.
    Well, he just finished MP 2 Echoes too this past week and claims it is miles better with a much more compelling world layout and gameplay (also he is raving about the soundtrack). He is starting MP 3 Corruption this week, I should brace myself for the shitstorm of "nintendoWiibabygame" complaints.

    • @RokushoTheRavager
      @RokushoTheRavager Před 4 lety +2

      Me personally I love all the Metroid Prime games, it’s one of my favorite trilogies, but to me each Prime just got better and better. I have my gripes with each one and I absolutely HATE the fact you can’t switch beams in MP3 because they combined them all, but nevertheless not a single game is bad and they each improve in their own unique way. Metroid Prime 2: Echos seems to definitely be the most controversial one among fans and I absolutely get why with the whole light & dark world aspect, which yes can absolutely be annoying, but I can’t help but appreciate the concept and I still stand by the fact that I think it’s brilliant level and environmental design.
      It definitely took inspiration from the Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past, of that I have no doubt in mind because just when you defeat Aghahim the big bad guy and thought the game was over, the game is like nah sike bitch you’re only halfway done as you now enter The Dark world, which is a much darker more twisted version of the world of Hyrule you thought you knew. This in turn allows you to re-explore some of the same locations you’ve already been to that look ENTIRELY different and allow you to discover new areas, new dungeons, and new hidden secrets.
      MP2 took this same concept but instead allow you to willingly travel back and forth between the light and dark world as much as you please, provided you have the necessary upgrades to survive such a inhospitable environment, and have you put together a complex puzzle of how in the hell you’re supposed to traverse these areas and where you have to be in a certain light or dark section to unlock or access a room. Can it be tedious and annoying, absolutely, but it’s fun, it’s engaging, and it keeps you thinking. Your brain never stops churning, thinking, “how in the fuck do I get over there, where in the unholy hell do I go, Jesus Christ how do I kill this bastard”. MP2 not only immersed me into its world, but it also made me give a shit, it kept me thinking when I came across a difficult puzzle, and it kept me on my toes, all of which I can absolutely appreciate.
      That said Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is my favorite. I could explain why but I doubt anyone cares to read it. All I’ll say is that with MP3 I’ve never felt so completely immersed in a video game. When I’m playing MP3 with motion controls by pulling levers, flipping switches, touching key cards, or ripping off enemy shields, I legitimately feel like I’m there and it’s fucking awesome.

      I've been playing Prime 1 since I was a kid, and I actually agree with your friend that Prime 2 is the better game. I used to be a Metroid Prime 1 fanboy until around last year when I gave Prime 2 a fair shot after finding a Gamecube copy. The world in Prime 2 might not be as colorful as Prime 1, but it's so much more interconnected and better designed for backtracking. Even during my first playthrough of Prime 1, I never liked that when I got to Phendrana Drifts and needed the Space Jump that I had to backtrack through the Magmoor Caverns to the start of the game, just to go all the way back to Phendrana Drifts through the Magmoor Caverns. In Prime 2 though, I can almost guarentee that you can find a direct elevator to the area you need to go to from the current area you're in. It may not be as organic for the world to be designed like this, but it makes for much better pacing that doesn't make me want to put the game down and come back to it later.

Yes!!!! to everything you said about the presentation; I remember being in awe with how the water effects on the helmet HUD dripped down and always loved seeing Samus's face reflecting on the visor after beaming a few enemies in a dark area. It was amazing how a purple lunch box was able to give such a great, smooth experience. I do feel that this game should be experienced at least once with the GameCube controller, i do have the Wii trilogy and though the motion controls do make shooting and aiming better, but the way you select different beam types didn't translate well with the Wii-mote.

    The thing that pisses me off about Metroid Prime is the fact that I cannot for the life of me get 100% scan data. I somehow always miss ome os two enemies and one or two data logs.. one of these days im gonna get that 100% completion. I have to, after all Metroid Prime is one of my favorite games of all time and it dsserves to be 100%'d

      IIRC two can be missed permanently, one being on the station that blows up, or your ship. Not sure, been a few years.

    Prime is good, but they're not the best Metroid games, not even close.

      That's preeeeeetty subjective. Super Metroid is my favorite but Metroid Prime is unbelievably good.

      merces47letifer I’m not denying it that, I absolutely adore Prime, it’s just not nearly as good or a classic as Super Metroid

      I'm the opposite, Super metroid was one of the worst for me, in many aspects apart from music and bosses. It has a slightly different game design and choices that i didn't like overall, like strange linearity, pacing, item hunting and bad control design

    I played all 3 games nearly back to back in early 2014 when I was barely in my teens and on a massive wii modding spree. 14 year old me was extremely impressed by the entire trilogy.
    I'm now 21 and this video definitely gave me nostalgia. I should replay them, see if the charm held up. Prime 1 definitely looks as good as I remember.
