- This is a short video demonstrating how to disassemble a 30" Apple Cinema Display.
This particular display had a cracked lcd panel and would no longer function properly.
These displays have compact fluorescent bulbs in them. If you disassemble one of these make sure to properly dispose of them, as well as any other components.

I just bought me one of these and I've always wanted one and I'm really glad to have found this video because I finally found out that there are multiple backlight tubes rather than just 1 or 2 like in a lot of other CCFL based LCD panels so this is amazing! I just wish I could find a way to figure out which ones were the updated models with the higher brightness and contrast. I couldn't find any information about that other than the fact that in 2006 they were quietly updated which is really annoying since they didn't put new model numbers on them.
I know this is old, but you can check the Serial Number on multiple Websites, and then you know from which year the monitor is

This is a helpful video! My dad has 3 Apple Cinema Displays (all 30 inch) and one 24 inch one. We either sold 2 or all of the 30 inch ones but kept the 24 inch (I'm hopeful that the last 30 inch wasn't sold) and would want to convert it to LED. I think that these CCFLs would need much more power than the LEDs so I would get some sort of power converter or step down thingy. Anyways, this is a great video and more people should have watched it!

I would try searching for a plastic sheet of similar thickness and translucent shade and see if I could find anything close. I never reassembled mine since the screen was broken.

I just bought a second hand 30-inch ACD and I was shocked to see how orange the screen was when I turn it on. Almost like if night shift mode was turned on and on high setting.
After calibration, I managed to get a relatively OK image but the coloration is not uniform and the remaining yellowish areas spoil my fun
Thanks to your video, I now understand that the last layer seems at fault (the one you remove at 11:30).
Its purpose seem to be to diffuse the light of the CCFL? I would like to try to change it myself, could you describe what it looks like (in terms of opacity, thickness…) from what you remember from your disassembly? That could really help in my search for a new layer with similar properties. Many thanks!
@Aubin Debatty Yeah mine is quite discolored as well. You're actually in luck, I have that particular sheet sitting next to my desk right now. It's fairly opaque, you can't see through it although you can see your hand through it if it's directly under it. It's 2mm thick. The edges (where it wasn't exposed to the light) are still white. The center of mine is a yellowed/orange color. It's 25" 7/8in (65.7225cm) wide and 16" 3/8in (41.5925cm) tall. Hope that helps! Good luck!
@@MakeFixUpgrade Thank you very much for your detailed answer! Indeed, it helps a lot to try to identify a compatible replacement layer without dismantling the monitor since I am currently using it! I need to do more research but at first glance, I can’t find many retailers for light diffusion plastics with similar caracteristics. Therefore, I think I will first try to restore it with a method for bleaching old plastics. If the results are not convincing I’ll go back to looking for a replacement. I'm not going to get started right away but I am definitely looking forward to get into it as soon as I have a vacation coming :)
Good luck! I'd probably buy a few different types of plastic sheeting of that thickness and experiment with them. You may end up with something you like better.
Aubin Debatty My display is also quite orange/yellowed I suspect is from the previous owner running at full brightness combined with the heat of operation. I plan to “retr0brite” my diffuser which will take several days in direct sunlight, but I’m open to replacing the original plastic diffuser with something similar. I’m curious to know what other plastics would be a suitable replacement.
@@MakeFixUpgrade Just lately I discovered how to clear the yellowed/opaque < transparent > PVC by using WC NET Bleach GEL cleaner. I believe it works on any plastic material as well but I'm not sure the dilution used for that specific product. I used it on a sponge and dabbed the plastic progressively lightly rubbing it. It worked a treat...

Was your screen showing signs of Yellowing tint? if so, do you think the lasts piece you removed prior getting to the bulbs is the issue? It looked a bit yellowish in the video .
Yes it was and I believe it was the plastic film.
Wow! Thanks dude. Great video. I finally took apart mine today for an LED conversion. Well I only took apart what’s necessary to get to the tubes. Very straight forward in fact. Do you think the top sheet of the lcd backlighting assembly to be a bit yellow tinted? I noticed in your video that the bottom thicker sheet was quite yellowish in color but mine is bright frosted white. I’m not sure wether or not I need to replace the top sheet since mine has a noticeable yellow hue compared to the other sheets in the assembly. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!
On mine the only sheet that was yellowed was the thick one. All the thin sheets are clearish/white. If the yellow hue bothers you then I'd replace it.

@@MakeFixUpgrade Hey man, I'm happy to report that the project was successful. Now the monitor only draws around 60 watts but it's only outputting about 330 nits. I should probably add double amount of leds and hopefully get around 600 nits and that will be very nice. Sure hope it will not overheat because there is absolutely zero ventilation 😂

Brilliant video, I have one fully working with some condensation-type issue on the screen (was saved outside) is it possible to remove the front first and leave the back intact as it's fully working. I want to wipe the backside of the glass in the hope the condensation will wipe off.
Hmm I no longer have this and can’t quite tell if it would be possible or not. I would suggest pulling it out of the case if you’re comfortable doing it and looking at it more closely. It would make sense to me that it would be possible but I don’t know. Good luck!

I'll watch this multiple times as the power brick (original Apple) melted the connection of the cable to the monitor (connection is fried black) and I need to replace the cable assembly and power brick. Is it enough to replace these two parts and hope it won't over heat again, or could the problem stem from within the monitor?

I have a question for you. I have an equal screen but the fault is when it starts or when it seems to turn off, pressing the power button and turning it off again. so that it is not repeated I take the power off and sometimes it does not turn off at some time. He could tell me what the fault is and how to fix it. I am looking forward to your response. Regards.
JA Macias your question is a little hard to understand but I think the problem might be the power switch. The only way to be sure would be to test it. It’s hard to diagnose it without having it physically present.
Nah, that's a result of the power supply. If one of the parts in it fails and doesn't supply the exact required voltage, then the screen will flicker. There are a few youtube videos about it and how to sort of get around it. None of the solutions are great, except for maybe finding a working power supply.
If all you want to do is replace or bleach the yellowed diffuser screen, do you have to go through all of the disassembly? It would be great if you didn't have to take off all the electronics to get to the diffuser!!
No, you have to disassemble it to get to the diffuser.

I have not tried replacing lamps with LED's on any displays yet. It would be interesting to try out though.

Hey there mate! Is there a possibility -given your experience looking at the guts themselves- of manually cleaning humidity marks somewhere behind the screen?
Where would you bet on finding a humidity mark in this screen? My mother has one and it's still working like a charm but these weird humidity marks drives us crazy lol!
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'humidity marks'. I live in the desert so humidity isn't really an issue here.

lol the one thing i’m looking for is an idea of what i’m in for in taking the hinged stand off the back, but its already off when the vid starts. Is the spring going to go flying and be impossible to get back on without a custom tool?

I just hooked mine up. It's been stored for a longggg time. The screen spots seem to be clearing up, thankfully, BUT now there's constant SCREEN BURNING! I'm doing screensaver to clear it up, but it's still screen burning constantly. I have to unplug in fear of permanent marks. Anyone know what I can do??
Hi, I have an issue with my 30". Somehow I took a 48V instead of 24V PSU. Now my backlight is out.
I have replaced the logic board but to no avail.
Do you know if it could be the backlight invertor? Replace the board? Any tips? Thanks!
@Steven it's hard to say what the issue might be precisely without seeing/testing it. I'd look closely at any of the circuit board components for anything that looks like it burned out. I can't remember if there was a built in fuse anywhere or not, but I'd also look for any and see if it fried. Good luck!

Wait did you see anything with a flashlight? I have a 30 inch with a power light but no picture. I replaced the logic board with no luck. I ordered an inverter out of a whim but nervous it won’t work because I don’t see anything with a flashlight. But I still got high hopes for it, running out of options.
@@AMPTechGrade I did see a picture with the flashlight. Put a multimeter on the components on the inverter. I got nothing. New inverter works perfect.
And the question remains… what is the LCD model number that is unreadable even in FHD thanks to CZcams compression?
@Schio Alves I still have the original footage, it looks like the model is LM 300W01 then under that is (ST)(A4).
hello. amazing video !!! have yuh ever opened an Apple Cinema HD Display 150W Power Adapter (A1098) ? if so, is that difficult ?
I haven’t opened one of those power adapters yet. If it’s like what I’m thinking of I believe it’s sealed and would need to have the plastic case cut off.
unless you're really good working around voltages and currents, i wouldn't recommend trying to service that apple ps. not designed to be serviced.
That sheet that's somewhat yellowed, can that be made white again?
I doubt it. If anyone succeeds I'd be curious to hear about it. Instead I'd look for some kind of new piece of plastic sheet to replace it with. I never put this one back together so I didn't worry about it.
7:40 What is the green PCB with the bazilion of connectors?
I think it’s a driver board for the actual LCD portion of the screen but not exactly sure.
Do you have any of the old boards? I am looking for the timing pcb which was the last one you removed (at 8:50 mark, connected to the cracked display panel).
No I don’t. I kept them around for awhile but cleaned out unused components and recycled them.

I am having trouble connecting one of mine, ACD 30inch to my Apple Mac Pro 2013
at first the monitor I got wasn't turning on at all I resorted to a useful tip I found on CZcams by covering the middle needle on both sides of the cable running to the power brick, Im using a 95W power adapter that I have working with my other 27inch ACD The only problem is I don't have the original 150W power supply for the 30inch and I think I've encountered a problem, My computer detects it ( display settings ) but shows no image. I can even send open windows to the display but nothing comes up. I ran a back light test with my flashlight and cannot see anything. Could this be because of the power supply? or the backlight being faulty?

@Jean Guerrero Its hard to diagnose electrical issues without having the device in hand and be able to probe the circuits. It sounds like it could be a problem with the backlight, the power supply, or a faulty circuit in between. If it were mine I'd probe the power leads to the backlight and ensure there's power to it and work backwards from there. As I recall it uses mini CFL bulbs as a backlight. I'd be very careful testing them though as I believe they're driven by high voltage. I'd also look for any components that look like the were burned/cracked or any abnormalities.

These feel hotter as they don't have an internal fan and use the case as a heat sink. You could put a fan near it or add another heat sink to the back of the case if you're concerned about the temperature.
Salvage but I love it lol. is there anyway to replace the back light with LEDs? so maybe the screen will be much brighter?
It would be a bit of work but definitely possible. You'd have to calculate and modify the voltage that powered the mini fluorescent tubes to match whatever is required by the LED's that you install. Doable as a learning project but probably not economical.
@@MakeFixUpgrade Thanks man, totally agree, I love mine to bits and it's starting to show some very slight back lighting unevenness, so I guess eventually it will go out completely. I could't find anything that's specifically made for the ACD 30 (ccfl to led conversion kits), so I will have to improvise if I even need to go that route. Maybe I will pick up a broken one from eBay and experiment on that first. What is your pick for a new monitor? New Pro Display XDR is out of the question because it will not work with PC.
@@onlythunder3323 One thing I noticed when taking the ACD apart is the thick light diffusion layer has yellowed with time. It's still white around the edges where it wasn't exposed to light, but my guess is the yellowing probably doesn't help with the brightness of the screen. You might possibly be able to replace that layer with a newer one (robbed from another TV/display??) if you cut it down to size. As far as other displays go, I've been using a cheap Acer I picked up from Best Buy a few years ago as a second monitor. Just recently picked up a used (excellent condition) Thunderbolt display for $150 so that's my current screen. I have 1 pc that I rarely use and enough other displays that work with it so that's not really a concern. Samsung has some nice curved monitors that I've been eyeing but haven't sprung for one yet.
@@MakeFixUpgrade Thank you so much for the info. Maybe the yellowing is due to the heat from the back-lighting over the years? ACD 30 does generate quite a bit of heat especially I keep it at full brightness all the time. Personally would not go with a curved display. I was so close to getting a LG 34BK95U-W but the reviews for that one is kind of a mixed bag. Hopefully there will be some new exciting announcements in the near future.
@@onlythunder3323 it could be heat or just the frequency of the light (maybe) in combination with the materials the diffuser is made of. I don't mind the curved display. Co-workers of mine had them and I kind of like them. It probably depends partly on the one you get. But yeah, I still don't have one (yet). The standard flat screens have been enough for me so far.

If you're comfortable taking it apart and don't mind experimenting with potential replacement plastic sheets I don't see any reason why not. :)

I have bought a apple cinema display 65w power adapter 24.5v 2.65 A will it work for model number A1083 which has power of 24.5v and 6.1A??
Uk Boy it might work but I'd be surprised if it did. If the power adapter only supplies 2.65A and the display requires 6.1A then you're 3.45A short. If you had the 6.1A power supply and were using it with the 2.65A I'd expect it would work as the power adapter is capable of providing more than is needed by the display. I could be wrong but that's my understanding of it.
I have the same display. What do you think, is it possible to remove the yellowing of the diffusor with hydrogen-preoxide and UV cure?

Do a google search for double sided film tape. Any double sided tape that’s really thin would work.

I just picked up one of these for use at home (I actually use one at work but they won't sell it to me) for a decent price but the the screen has some scratches so I found another donor monitor for a good price and I'm going to frankenstein them to get one good monitor. I probably should have just bought one in good condition to begin with but where's the fun in that?

Thanks for the feedback and observations. I'm still finding my recording style, when I'm recording I'm thinking 'we' as in me + any viewers. As far as the preamble, it's part of the 'tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them' style I learned from speech class years ago. Not sure it's the best approach for videos but I started with what I know and am trying to find the balance between how much is enough information and how much is too much information. It's also an experimental process to decide in which order to present the info. Hopefully my videos are informative/entertaining and improve over time. I'm still working on being comfortable in front of the camera as well.

I haven't tried it, but I think it would be possible, that is if you mean converting it to an LED backlight.

There are a few variables with the switch to LED. You'd have to find a way to convert the power to the existing lamps to the power needed for the LED strip. I haven't done it, but you'd have to calculate the power draw for whatever LED's you used and build a circuit to convert the voltage provided to that needed by the new setup. You'd also have to test and make sure that the new lights provided the appropriate amount of light at the temperature needed. (5k light is whiter, 2k light is yellower.) In the comment I responded to about the 2mm thick part, it's the sheet I remove at 11:30. I don't have a source for the sheet, I'd experiment with buying a few different light diffuser panels of that thickness and cutting them using the existing yellowed sheet as a template, then test to see if it provides the desired result.
Has anyone seen a mod dropping a new 4k screen into this beautiful housing?
I would love to see one, I have a 23 inch cinema display with a purple panel, would be amazing to be able to drop a modern panel into it. I have a feeling a big problem would be the 16x10 aspect ratio though
