My name is April Lauren, I am a lifestyle vlogger here on CZcams, RYT 200 Yoga Instructor, communications profesional and military spouse (we move alot). Summer of 2020 my weight reached 352.8, miserable and full of fear, I knew I had to change. I couldn't keep crash dieting and failing... cycling. I took a different approach. I decided to figure out what my body needed, what I needed and to take full responsibility for weight and my progress, no short cuts... With patience, kindness and determination, I began. This was one of my first videos on this journey. Currently, I am halfway to my weight loss goal of losing 200 lbs and have found a passion for fitness and running. I look forward to sharing my progress, bits of my story and our adventures. Thank you for encouraging me.

I am a runner. I can assure you that I NEVER think anything bad about other people that I meet on my runs. It actually makes me a bit sad that overweight people often avoid eye contact and pretend they are not there on the trail with me. Because all they would get was a smile and a friendly hand wave, same as all the other runners. We all started somewhere, we remember how hard it was and we enjoy encouraging others. Great job and congrats on your first mile.

I agree, ive been a runner since highschool and i am very thin so ive seen it happen when someone “heavier” runs by, they start walking. Little do they know, i havent ran in YEARS so i myself can barely run a mile without walking/feeling like im dying.

Yes! This is so true. I’ve run 2 marathons. But in between I quit running and so both times I started from absolute scratch and it’s soooooo hard so I have nothing but respect for anyone who’s out moving.

Thanks for saying that Jana! I just started a couch to 5k program, I am fairly heavy, and I often wonder what the fast runners think when they see my top speed. It is more of a slow jog, but that is what I can do now, and I can only keep that up fo r half a mile. We should all feel comfortable getting moving at our own pace.

To be honest I wish all heavier set people would know that.If anyone is judging them there a piece of crap and I hope you don’t mind them.i agree with the other comments whenever I see someone walking. I always think positive thoughts regardless of their size. Its like think about it what’s the meanest thing you can really think of when you see a heavy person.”oh, they need to lose weight” well it makes no sense to have that thought when that’s literally what you’re doing by walking even if it’s just a mile whatever you have to start somewhere. And at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what other people think of you’re not happy with you’re self. I hope you find that inner happiness because I’m not a heavier guy and I still struggle with myself with other things besides weight and once upon a tile a was heavier and I find myself just as sad at times as I was then. I’m probably preaching something you already know. But losing weight isn’t the do all be all. You seem like a great person regardless and please try to be happy 😊

    1. It is very unlikely that people are thinking bad thoughts about you when they go by. In fact, they are probably rooting for you! 2. To make yourself a little more comfortable (because it's summer and soooo hot) consider going as early in the day as you can and get rid of those black clothes that suck up sun and heat. They just make it worse. Those bright pants are perfect, get your shirt and hat matching that and you will feel the difference. Keep plugging away!

Former pro runner here. You are doing great but I personally think you overdone it. It needs to be sustainable. What I mean is you need to make it easy so you have the courage to go out there at least 3 times a week. Keep it going.
    My tips are:
1: keep it easy - never push yourself and get to the point you are hating it.
2: be consistent - "I want to be faster, I want to be better" - NO. Just go out and you will be...is a long process.
3: Slowly change diet....not radical decisions but small changes.
4: Be ready for a long journey.
5: You are you. Don't listen to people like me online. Listen to your body and try to get yourself "in the zone". No matter how much advice we can give, ultimately it is your body and your will to keep it healthy (remember healthy doesn't mean "fit").
    Much love!

Im an athlete, but every time I pass someone overweight walking, or see them at the gym, or pool, I just think how proud of them I am that they have the motivation to get out and better themselves, and take steps to be healthy. This is the same way a lot of athletes see people getting started on their health journey.

You would be surprised by how many people have positive thoughts when they see you out walking because you are actively doing something to try an improve your life. And when you think someone driving by is having a negative thought, just tell yourself soon they will be eating their negative judgements because soon they will be seeing your progress as the weight starts coming off :)

You did so well! Keep on keeping on. I'm a counsellor and I have a suggestion for you that might help - don't say negative things about yourself. I know that most us do that in order to be the first to say mean things, but it is very hard on our confidence. Imagine you are walking with an eight year old girl who you love to bits. You'd only let her hear positive things about her self. The woman I saw in this video is brave and beautiful. She is moving her body gracefully and purposefully through space taking the time to notice and be moved by the natural beauty she encounters. Much love to you.

Take a moment and think about how you think of people doing what you did here. Do you laugh at them or judge them? Most likely not. I think far fewer people are like that than many of us self conscious people let ourselves believe. Whatever journey someone is on, I silently cheer on anyone making good decisions for themselves and I think far more people are with me on that than anything negative! And for the few that are judging you? Feel sorry for them that they have something dragging them down so much they drag others down with them then keep loving them, others, and yourself.

Thing that amazes me is that no matter how much pain you're in and no matter how insecure you may feel, you keep smiling and pointing out good things about the situation.
That's the kind of perspective that can pull through difficult times and the kind of perspective that gets things, like massive amounts of weight loss, done. I admire you for that.
And as for the people driving past, it is equally as likely (if not more likely if they're good people) that they were thinking positive thoughts about you, choosing to get out on a stinking hot day to move your body and make a healthy choice. I don't like watching people exercise, but it's different with you. You make me smile. I wish you all the best.

This is why the fat acceptance movement is so toxic, a young woman can barely walk a measly one mile because of excessive weight. Even my parents in their 60s, one who has arthritis, can happily walk around 5 miles with me. So glad you're doing something about it, the obesity problem is getting out of hand. Keep pushing though and increasing the length and intensity, you'll get fit in no time if you're consistent.

    • @AprilLauren

I definitely do not understand the fat acceptance movement. I wish there was a movement that focused on being real with our selves and being kind to ourselves at the same time. I mean, yes, I am fat. I am morbidly obese. And that is not okay. At the same time, it is okay for me to be kind to myself as I make life changes. Anyhow, I don't know why I stepped on a soap box when you already agree with me, haha. So, Ill stop, haha. Thank you!! 😊 I appreciate the encouragement and your support! You can do it. You might also consider walking poles. They force you into the correct walking posture, they force a larger stride, reduce back pain (I get back pain walking without them) and they work your upper arms all at the same time. Since I'm also unstable, I use a cane, it keeps me upright too. You go. You'll make it. Use a tool if you need one.

Most people who passed you probably thought "good for her," and who cares what they think anyway. Keep going! Loosing weight will dramatically reduce your pain. I had a very bad spinal injury over 15 years ago leaving me barely able to walk, and causing me to gain weight. 5 years ago I did 1600 miles of the pacific crest trail and 3 years ago I did a 65 mile ultramarathon in hot, humid Indonesia... And I'm not thin by any stretch of the imagination. If I can do it, you can too!

    You got this!
A major tip: when you first start your walking route: go very slow. Really lift your feet heel to toe to get them warmed up and stretched. Do this for the first 2-5 minutes. Then gradually speed up. Even with the mile walking - if you’re not used to it - you WILL BE SORE! But don’t give up! Stretch, stretch stretch your hamstrings, your shins, your hip flexors as well. Don’t skip the next day walk - it will make the soreness much worse! Do the same slow walking warm up. Try contracting your abs to reduce the strain on your back.

Do not underestimate what you did today - this is a HUGE achievement, and you should be damned proud of yourself! You could've chickened out at any point, but you didn't, and that makes you a chuffin' LIONESS! **fist bump.**
It WILL get easier each time, I promise. As an avid walker myself, my suggestions are:
    1) get yourself a really good pair of walking shoes - or failing that... I think you call them 'sneakers' over in the US? Proper, chunky-soled sports ones, ideally with comfort insoles and good ventilation.
    2) Don't be afraid to use a hiking or hill-walking stick - walking sticks aren't just for old ladies. 😁 Lots of die-hard walkers use them, and it'll take some of the pressure off your back. (Might also help if you need to defend yourself from unwelcome critters as well!)
    3) Music, podcasts or an audiobook while you walk can be very helpful too - often makes the time go by quicker, but just be careful if you're walking along roads. There are some good inspirational music pieces that can really help to motivate you, and some even have subliminal sounds and messages designed to boost you psychologically as well.
But if this video is anything to go by, I think you're gonna do just great. You have the right attitude and the determination, and you're an inspiration. Wish you all the luck in the world, and looking forward to seeing your journey - both physical and metaphorical!

You'll look back and be so glad you started. It's never too late. I was almost 300lbs October 2018. I decided I didn't actually want to be that size. So I started just by battling the binge. Learning healthy replacements. Being comfortable with feeling hungry at night. I am down to about 235 now. It hasn't been a straight path. I've yoyod, I've thrown out my scale. I measure my hips now instead. I am still trying to find exercise I enjoy, for now it's a lot more to do with keeping up with my 3 little kids, housework, yardwork etc. I do walk occasionally, indoor bike. But when I do exercise, I end up starving and binging. So I prefer doing minimal exercise and coping with mild hunger pains.
I wish you the very best on your own personal journey, I know you will succeed!

You get the same benefits whether you walk your entire walk in one session; Or break your mile into multiple sessions, like 4 sessions of 1/4 mile walks.
For those starting out, one way to build up distance is to start out walking 10 mins three times a day. Such as before or after breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Then next phase is to walk 15 mins in three sessions a day. The second week....
Than 20 mins three times a day in three sessions for week three. That is one hour total per day!
And so on. This can really work. Soon you could be up to 90 mins of walking per day if that is a goal!
You can move up to longer session lengths as sessions become too easy btw. One week per phase is just a suggestion. That worked for me. But listen to your body. If the longer length sessions need more than a week to get conditioned to, then take an extra week and evaluate if you feel ready to increase the length of your three sessions.
So many people push themselves to a long length session right off the bat, not realizing you can get pretty much the same benefit by dividing the distance up.
Just keep moving, like Dory keeps swimming...

I don't think I’m an anomaly in thinking supporting thoughts for those people. I’d like to believe that others have the same thoughts. So please don’t think that anyone has bad thoughts about you as you are doing what’s good and right for you.
And truthfully, even if they were, it's not like you can do anything with their opinions and thoughts. They are worthless, and anyone thinking otherwise should try to go buy a car with someone else's opinion and see what the dealership says. ;)

@@Brocolli_Pizza I work at a gym (well, not now due to covid :/) but most of the members are super supportive and encouraging. Before I worked at a gym, when I first went as a member, I remember having those thoughts too. But, I was also welcomed with support and encouragement. Many people forget that we all started somewhere. We can relate, we know the inner dialogue, the depression, the discouragement we give ourselves.
Though to be fair, the worst thought I had of anyone running, was when I myself attempting running the first time in my life. I couldn't last 60 seconds and had to slow to a walk. When I did see another person running, I always thought to myself, "pfff they aren't running the whole time. They probably are stopping when they turn the corner" I had these thoughts because I couldn't do it. I laugh at myself now, because it is very possible that there are people thinking the same thing about me. And I can relate, because I thought that it was impossible to consistently run without stopping. I'm glad I kept trying and stuck with it, because I now have my own answer :)

Don't worry about speed or distance. You need very low intensity/low impact exercise for a long period. Walk a comfortable pace for an hour total. Also, keep daily total carb(carbs-fiber) intake between 30-50 grams a day. Eat your fill of most any green vegetable, along with reasonable portions of meat and eggs. By getting carbs(sugars) out of your diet, you will reduce hunger cravings. Last but not least, drink a 20 oz bottle of water BEFORE each meal.
