  • A striking number of films and shows today are answering the age old question, “Can money really buy happiness?” with a resounding “No.” Everywhere we turn, we’re seeing unhappy rich characters, whether in Succession, The White Lotus, The Menu, or Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. So even though today we’re pushed constantly to lust after having money in our culture - and having enough money is obviously important - why does lots of money still turn you into a bad or miserable person?

      the weird thing about this video is that they only address a very small portion of people who are rich and who have attitude like this, and they never address the personalities of the middle class and the detrimental ideologies that the poor and middle class have that actually stagnates society, as if their lives are better for it , when many of their lives are better because of the super rich. Not saying we have bend over backwards for the super rich, but a lot of the expansions of our world is because people got rich and had ideas, that many people on the bottom couldn't or weren't mentally strong to have. many of the friendships and good life and ideologies that people have is because there was a top to allow it to happen. And this idea that these people dont pay their fair of taxes' even though stye continue to improve the standards of living, (not all of them) but many of them while the rest get to live their lives on things that the top can't always focus on.

    • @thomasnielsen5580
      @thomasnielsen5580 Před rokem +12

      The problem with a video like this, is that they create an illusion that wealth is bad for you. It probably doesn't matter much for them, since they are living comfortable lives, but others will look at their own lives and thinking: "my life sucks, it can only get better". There is of course some truth in the video, but there is a common theme with these types of stories. The rich people are either douches, makes stupid priorities, forget who they were or other stupid things. This is of course how you write engaging TV, but it is very easy to remove these variables from your own life if you get rich. Of course, I'm not rich, but i know who i am and who i want to become.

    • @thomasnielsen5580

      @@kmt8825 Actually not true. Ideas are formed and executed by ordinary people. They become rich because of that, because we live in a capitalist society. Except for the tech industry and some other outliers, current wealthy people has mostly inherited their fortune from their ancestors. Some of these like Elon Musk continues the legacy that their ancestors initiated, while many others are able to engage in status quo - meaning get an education and get a job at dad's firm, knowing that a top position will be gained with 10+ years experience.

    • @rene3759
      @rene3759 Před rokem

      Yeah but some people get greedy or get peer pressure from consumerism/elitism and desire for status/power. Some people want money because they want power as in influence and access to non monetary resources for example how if you need a transplant and are put in a waiting list of you have money it'll only get you a little far up the list but if you have influence and power you can go all the way to the top. But you are right you need to stay grounded and humble but some people might struggle if they come a across or have to deal with other wealthy people who might use their money and power against you or people you are about. So even if you are a grounded well off person who isn't money obsessed or elitist you might change your behaviour due to wanting to protect yourself or others you care about. How do you think one should deal with that? (genuinely asking because I also agree with your mind set)

    • @OpticalSorcerer
      @OpticalSorcerer Před rokem

      @@rene3759 There's always segregation, tbh; if you inherit, win, or build your way into being rich, you're "new money" and thus inferior to those who have had money for a long time. The social pressure you feel is based on your culture and how much you have (ie winning $7 million at the lottery vs having a $700 million business).
      I think the resistance to use money for harming/inconveniencing others depends on the circumstance; regardless of social status, people can feel entitled about ANYTHING. Very often you may come to the thought of "rich people are so extra/selfish...but I would likely do the same thing" and "money makes the world go round." If you have a lot of money (and influence), you'll likely want to use it just because you can. I think it all depends on perspective and personal judgement. For anyone who benefits, there is someone who doesn't. Even when you're using your money/influence for "good" (subjectively speaking), someone is going to despise you for it. Love begets jealousy, success begets envy, that sort of thing.
      People will despise you when you're rich and despise you when you're poor, even if they're in the same situation, simply because you could be a threat to them.The question is: what can you do without? How long can you be happy before stepping on someone's toes? The transplant decision you mentioned is a no-brainer, but so is expecting someone to be angry at you for it.

    I say this as a Socialist: I was born in 1992 (end of the Cold War. LOL) and my parents were solid, working-class people. My mom worked for the attorney general of the State of Florida (as an accountant) and my dad was in the US Army for 30 years (he was in the 1991 Gulf War). He also worked for National Linen (he wasn't in our family, much.) I wouldn't say we were rich, but we weren't poor (my mom was very frugal with money). We lived in a well-to-do neighborhood in Tallahassee, Florida and had a modest, one-story house. Then, in 2003, my mom died, and my dad couldn't hold down a job. He would get his disability check from the VA, but it often wasn't enough. We often went long periods of time with no lights sometimes. He would later go to jail, and we lost our house. Then, in 2008, I got my first job working at a CVS and have been steadily employed off and on ever since. Yes, I went to school and worked hard (mostly custodial jobs, not by my choice). I graduated with my GED, Associates of Arts degree, and a Video production certificate. I even held down four jobs during the summer of 2017 to pay off some bills and go to Tampa Bay Comic Con and a couple years before that, I saved up enough money to pay for my classes out of pocket. (As opposed to student loans). Long story short, being rich (especially billionaires) is more of inherited wealth as opposed to just hard work. People [working-class] often dilute themselves that "hard work makes one rich" because they want to feel superior to poor people despite those same working people are no better than those same poor people they claim to despise.

You either have to profit of of your employees, your clients, your tenants, etc. That leaves a scar on your moral compass, it stains the way you see life and your relations to others, and therefore their relations to you. Hence the sense of being miserable and lonely and not knowing who to trust. At least you have the sense of accomplishement, that you've deserved that wealth somehow. Heirs don't even have that upside. It's just empty privilege, while being raised by someone who's morally compromised enough to become a billionaire.

Triangle of Sadness didn't come to our theaters, but I wasn't going to sit through 20 min. of vomit. 😖There has been quite a few "eat the rich" movies over the past few years and it isn't surprising. while there may be some that still worship people like the Kardashians, most of us are sick of their bullshit and the systems in place that keep that wealth gap growing. I will not say there aren't good people who are also rich. It just feels like they are very few and far between.
    Also, thank you for mentioning Triangle of Sadness WITHOUT SHOWING ANY VOMIT! As an emetophobic, I thank you! 😀

    "Abigail is the only person able to fish for food and start fires. So all the wealthy people become totally dependent on her." Honestly, isn't that the case now, IRL? The rich people's wealth is dependent on all the people working underneath them, making money from their productivity. It's also dependent on consumers purchasing their products/services. It's also dependent on their household/transportation/personal/etc staff, who support them in daily functions, freeing up their time to concentrate on managing their wealth. Wealthy people need us more than we need them.

    The take here - as it came across to me - is not that money can’t buy happiness. It does - to a point.
    It is that more money doesn’t equal more happiness so it is important to know when it is enough, otherwise you start cutting out what matters for an amount that does not matter -ignore a need for a luxury. That is called ‘Greed’ and greed has never made ANY ONE happy.

    I grew up in a small village in a rural area that has become a very touristic place in the last years, as the mountains became a very popular destination during the pandemic.
    Everyone I know that grew up here and has a more simple lifestyle than most city people is actually happier, despite not having much money, or much, in general. However, I've seen a lot of working-class and rich people coming here; I've served such people when I was waiting tables, and they're just so shallow and unaware of so many important things. Not all of them, but the majority definitely lives in a bubble that I don't see that's true happiness. Their consumerism and their behavior overall is like they're trying to fill some hole deep inside them, that are always too distracted to notice, because - I figured out - they don't want to notice. I've had a lot of conversations with this type of people and it's always similar.
    People seem to have forgotten that money and material things can actually do things worse, and be a source of unhappiness itself. I don't understand how is a trend now to be so frivolous and deluded to actually believe that you'd be happier if you were more comfortable. Nothing says so. And this comment section is just sad.

Because in real life, Miles could have very easily gotten away with Andi's murder, but burning the Mona Lisa??? That will kill anyone's reputation stone dead....
    Which of course, is the great tragedy: not only can Miles potentially 'buy his innocence' if he was accused of murder, even if the sh*theads (😆) know that he did, but especially that destroying a piece of art is more horrifying to him than taking a human life....

    This is something I've been thinking lately. "Wealth gives you the power to make other people happy or miserable".
    Wealth comes with a lot of power. Power over people, some ultra wealthy can change policy and even alter the market with their actions. These ultra wealthy people are the realistic version of a "God" because the amount of power they have... now, if this "Godlike" people are unhappy, have mental issues and find no connection with "humanity", what do you think they'll do?? The possibility of them doing something good for humanity is the same as doing something against humanity.
    I think the creators of these shows are trying to tell stories like these not to empathize with the wealthy, but to warn us of the danger and poor ridiculousness that these people decide where humanity is heading. But it is possible to take control again and bring down the wealthy, or at least win in their own game... just like Lucia did in White Lotus, Margot did in the Menu and Benoit & Cassandra did in Onion.

    I think the reason why this sort of media has become more popular is because we have more access to the lives of rich people. We realize now that rich people are not inherently special people. Most of them were born into wealth and realize that they can increase their wealth through investments or becoming entrepeneurs. I think rich people are being exposed for doing horrible things trying to make more money off of the average person and acting more "lower class", which demystifies wealthy people as well. In a capitalist society, 90 percent of all millionaires lose a majority of their wealth in three generations.
    I think the greatest problem that affects rich people is living in that wealthy sphere, where anything you have is just seen as a common good and not something to be thankful about. I think money also allows many people to fall into their addictions and not seek help and not keep themselves from temptation as well. Also, in the US, I think money is used as a way of showing wealth. For example, in the US, a restaurant is defined only by how good the food is but also by its service and ambiance. However, in Korea, resteraunts are mostly focused on the food quality and everything else comes second. Its not about being served by someone. Its about having a good time and enjoying life.
