We've all been there: Maybe it's a half hour singing session or maybe its several hours... Your voice starts feeling weak and... HOARSE
It doesn't sound as good, and it feels terrible.
If this isn't enough trouble, the bigger issue is that most of the time, it's hard to pinpoint the WHY!
WHY do I get hoarse after short singing sessions? How can other singers sing for hours and NOT get hoarse?
How can you get the sounds you want to get and be better and easier on your voice? Watch this!! :) It's all about airflow management!
YES, it is possible to sing for long hours. YES you can sing aggressively. But you have to play by the rules and then your voice will honor you!
Not affiliated with Chris or compensated in anyway, but Chris's "Discover your voice" course is fantastic. Starts a bit slow, but he takes the time to properly set the foundation up. Moved me past a lot of throat tightness and proper inhalation/placement issues I couldn't seem to solve even with IRL lesson teachers.
Happy to hear you’ve been so impacted by the course!! Awesome!
I also took the course. As valuable as the material was, the real value was Chris. Some of my questions leaned towards nutsville but Chris never wavered and did his best to answer them. I think Chris could do a live stream answering questions and make a few noises here and there, and people would pay for it. I know I would. Well, don't do the live stream on Super Bowl night :)
the phone could hear you fucking screaming santa fe at the top of your lungs
I too have been enrolled in Chris's courses for a couple of months and love his way of teaching. He really does break things down into these small skill sets that really begin to come together. I love how he takes every question asked head on and with kindness and uses them as learning experiences for all who witness or hear his answer. Really great.
Now I can add “Nasally old man” to my Chris Liepe vault that also includes “dying cat”, “worried ghost”, “crow” , “cookie monster”, “Mickey and Goofy”, and many others. Thanks for the awesome examples that really make it easy to understand the concepts!
My wife: "Why in the hell are you singing like that?!"
Me: "I'm embracing the nasally old man!!"
ME TOO
Same here XD
Neighbors are like "who the hell lives there?"
lol
Yes 🤣😎💪🏼
You should talk to her in that voice for an entire day and see if she goes nuts or not lolol.
Literally sitting here with a hoarse voice and this vid pops up, thx chris as always
Nice! Good timing (sorry bout your voice)
This happened to me too. :)
Same here! lol
That is actually pretty scary if you ask me lol
I swear he's a mind reader....
Notes to help me retain info
-warning signs: mucous buildup and hoarseness
-hoarseness is usually from swelling from using too much air through primary cords
- balance support with airflow moderation/compression
- exercise: "if you feel, you will heal" Place "if" nasally, then hold back air/compress and let it leak through. Almost hold back too much air. Nasally old man sound. Start extreme then back it off. Play around with it!
- uses a lot of ee vowel, but you can play around with opening it up
Thanks Chris you rock 🤘
I like that you are not afraid to sound ugly to get the point across.
The last time I got hoarseness was very long ago when I did not know how to scream or sing in high pitch. I used to use my neck a lot and that led to straining much. Todays, I have been screaming alost everyday without hurting at all thank to Chris. The “the discover your voice” really helps me know the feel when I do it right. Before learning this muscle memory, I spent a significant amount of time on singing the part repeatedly until I found that spot. Now, I can do it without even thinking about that. Again, Thank you, Chris.
And I am hitting A5 now. When I started G#5 was what I noted down in my diary. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
This technique legit saved my voice man! Good teaching!
Thanks for sharing this. It's good to remember it always, mostly when you are learning.
This is gold stuff chris. I just got hoarse today so this kinda timed perfectly. Love you man
Thank you Chris, you are really helping me to discover lots of things about how I can use my voice. You're a great vocal couch.
When you were going to giving an example, I realised that was exactly how I sound... The positive and negative examples really help me understand it
Very cool....clear, demonstrative and easy to grasp...thank you!
Great vid, Chris! Your videos and your free course have helped me so much in discovering my voice.
Great to hear!
Im finding your videos super helpful, even when it’s “just” learning about what it is I’m doing. It’s great to be able to put what the voice feels like into words. Also your screaming videos have been the next step for me. Thank you!
Great to hear! You're so welcome!
this video was so spot on, answered all the questions thank you!
Really good timing! Looking forward to watching this
Hope you enjoy!
Hi Chris, i wanted to say thank you 'cause you have been the most recent missing piece in my rock singing, happy new year!
Happy new year!
Always informative, awesome content!
Another great lesson Chris! You've helped me a LOT with my vocals. If I'm ever brave enough to start recording, I'll send a link for your review!
The synchronicity of this with the fact that I've been messing with these types of sounds is priceless which is also in large part thanks to your video on how to sing like Chris Cornell. You have been an essential part of my attempts at singing. Thank you truly.
You’re so welcome!
I've got a mild cold at the moment and a deadline to meet for a high note on my band's new song (for release next month), I will practice this tomorrow morning and see if I can hit it without hurting my throat as I did on the early rehearsals
Thanks to you I was able to finally scream without losing my voice on the 2nd song, great lessons
Merry Christmas, Chris! 😉
Great video ! Helped me a lot, thank you. Also singing along was really fun :)
YOU JUST GOT A NEW SUB. You and excellent in breaking down the facts by example, that's not easy. Thank you!
Welcome aboard!
Excellent vid Chris. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
Okay Chris! The Lord put you in my path. You are exactly what I've been looking for. I would love a one-on-one, but I didn't find the website to be very user-friendly. Anyway, I have been needing a warm up that will help me make an octave jump seamless. This will help. Thank you. Changes my whole dynamic when singing.. Thank you
Amazing exercize! Thank you so much! Cause sometimes I have this problem =)
Love you bud merry Christmas thank you for all the good lessons
Merry Christmas!!
jesus, this technique changed everything. I improved drastically. Love you forerver ma bruv
Been improving my singing for a year now and am seeing some major differences even though I am still insecure and often times think it doesn't sound great when it does xD but my voice gets hoarse afterwards.
So, thank you, Chris! Gonna check this out after work. :)
Loved the video. Used to take vocal lessons for a year, but now have to learn by myself. Everytime I started recording, about an hour into recording, my vocals get kinda hoarse and hitchy when singing. Definitely will try this and hope it helps me.
Saving this one to watch again later, interesting stuff
I have been struggling with hoarseness for a while, kind of had it in my head that I needed to push for power, this video was eye opening
I needed this video haha. Would also love to see a video on Perry Farrell of Janes Addiction!
"The _n_ _a_ _s_ _a_ _l_ _l_ _y_ _o_ _l_ _d_ _m_ _a_ _n_ " is something I can't get out of my head now. Thanks Chris as always!
Lifesaver, seriously, thank you
great lesson, thanks ur channel rocks ur an amazing singer!
Perfect timing for this video!
Good!
haha "embrace the nasally old man" amazing video like always.
All the best for 2021, keep creating such an amazing content
As a vocalist, this actually helped me to make my voice feel better for some reason! I had a very hoarse voice for a while and I didn't know why until I watched this video. Since masks are enforced in my school it made it harder to breathe more controllably and I had to breathe in more air which in a result got my voice sorer and sorer. Thanks to you, I am singing more often and longer! Also I'm not totally sure but I have a bit of grit and distortion as well as some higher pitches mixed :D. Keep making these videos! You deserve more!!
Love ya bro video is awesome and i am glad you are who you are
this video popped up at the exact right time
it's strange - this is happening kinda often to me.
Fascinating. I suffered from this for years when our band PA was bad, I could barely hear my monitors and my guitarist was too loud. About 2 years ago, we switched to a silent stage setup and for the first time in years I could actually hear myself...I was suddenly able to sing a 4 hour gig with no problems! I just didn't need to push as hard or sing as loud to hear myself and it made the world of difference,
What's a silent stage setup? Sounds interesting.
Jason Cabral no guitar amps, we have 2 guitarist and we both use Headrush modellers running straight to the mixer. Our bass player runs direct to the desk with a bass DI unit and our drummer uses electric drums. I also play keyboards which are plugged straight into the desk. We monitor with in ears. The only sound you will hear on stage is the drummer hitting the pads!
I have a Presonus Studiolive 32 digital mixer that remembers all our settings and a Turbosound column array PA system that's lightweight and sets up in minutes. I can turn the entire band up or down with one fader!
The entire band can setup in about 10 mins. We never need to soundcheck, cause nothing ever changes. The mixer has a virtual soundcheck mode that I use for tweaking the main eq but that's pretty much it.
The other benefit is you get much more room on stage, so it's great for smaller venues!
@@officialWWM that's crazy. Really I'm a guitar player who's learning to sing. My amp is so important to me. Still, I haven't played live singing. As a guitar player I'm sensitive to what the singer hears and the levels of the band. I always felt like a ...conductor that way??? Listening to all the sounds. The old stories you hear about Johnny Ramone too loud for Joey and Joe Perry overpowering Steven Tyler are idiotic to me. I've heard way too many punk bands that just sound like..yeah sawmills. Sounds like you have a system really dialed in which I totally respect.
Jason Cabral it's taken me a lot of years and literally thousands of gigs to arrive at this point. Pre Covid, we were playing 4 nights a week, sometimes twice on Sundays. We needed a system that is quick to setup, easy to transport and sounds consistent and great. There's some great gear out there these days and there's never been a better time to be a live musician but it does require an open mind. Would I rather use a valve amp? Sure but the Headrush is pretty damn good, a lot more consistent sounding at any volume and a thousand times more reliable! Load amps might endure the player has a great time but digital technology ensures EVERYONE in the room has a great time! Our approach is about what's best for the band and audience, not any individual. My drummer hates electric drums too but he plays them, cause they work and frankly, sound great!
This is very coincidental I’ve been tracking harsh vocals all day 😂😅
Also what you said about using too much air is so important, gotta have the compression/distortion without all the volume to not cause damage!
i just tracked some metal vocals but forgot to warm up and have a band practice in four hours
So I just trashed my vocals today, at first I was fine. I don't have any hoarseness just a little soar. When it comes to harsh vocals, for me it's an old habits dying hard kind of thing, I'm happy to hear someone else confirm the volume issue.
I always thought it was all the neighing exercises that made me a horse
Haha. My bad. It’s that!
@@chrisliepe Thanks for the videos! I just signed up for the free voice lessons 😊
@@aaronarandac4 you won’t be disappointed!
Nice!
As Donny Osmond used to say in the late 1970's, "Cute Marie, real cute"
Thank u Chris . God bless you
Best teacher on CZcams!a
You absolutely rule man 👏👏👏
Hey man!! How are you doing???
I gotta thank you because now it's fun to practice! Before watching your vids I was so embarrased by how I sounded while finding my voice
Now I can have a good laugh, embracing every step of my process, even though I might sound akward at times
"If you feel, you will heal"
Yay!!
I embraced my nasally old man and actually developed a pretty killer dave mustaine impression 😂😂
I'm on a mission to find the inner Neanderthal after this Chris. First step is to figure out how to do this without coughing. Excellent tutorial. You're a class act. Thanks so much.
You're so welcome!
I like how Brett Manning puts the nasally voice "Bratty" hehehe. I am a brat, and so I do these things. Has also vastly helped with my mix/head voice :) Thanks as always, Chris! I hear some Chris Cornell in your voice (Fell on Black Days popped into my head, when you started adding the rasp).
Now I'm inspired to do "runs" exercises :D
Thanks for being here! I hope you get to check out the many videos I've done on Chris Cornell :) Covers, lessons, analysis videos etc...
Dear Santa Chris, all I want for Christmas is a video lesson on Steven Tyler's style😁
I’ve been having a lot of mucus build up in my throat for like a month and I think I have to wait until it’s healed and it’s really been bothering me because I know it’s not normal. Thanks for uploading this I’ll try it when I think I’m healed. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated:)
I'm used to singing ridiculous sounding exercises but this one made me crack up laughing
5:53 LMAO
Thanks so much
Hello Chris!!! I have a question for you, do you have any suggestions to me to avoid getting hoarse in air condition room? My workplace giving me a problem a week ago and my voice get hoarse and i cant sing above f4. I dont know what to do😟
Btw thank you for all your efforts senpai
I really enjoyed every content you made.
So in return i just like evry vids u uploaded and continue to support even though i cant afford your course xD ❤️❤️
Hey Chris! I was trying to sing like Rob Zombie and now my voice is hoarse😆 Do you you think you could do a "Sing Like Rob Zombie"? He just has a massive vocal sound and I can't nail what he's doing under the hood. Thanks for all the vocal tips and videos. Its helped me immensely. Happy holidays✌
I already am the old guy and this gives me permission to work it. I've been trying so hard to smooth it out and instead I wind up with the Neanderthal mucus voice. Thanks for this. I'll play with it and add it to my tool kit that I'm getting from you.
Hey Chris! Have you heard of Nothing But Thieves? It'd be sick to have a vocal breakdown of Conor, their singer, he's mad versatile and really really expressive. Would love to hear your take on him!
5:30 this exercise reminds me of practising violin with too much tension on the bow to produce that scratchy sound.
My mom asked what i'm watching 😂😂😂 thank you for the lesson!
You can do a video with all singing and vocal terms
Well I freaking never. Squeezing the "if" out gave a weird sounding yet very comfortable feeling crackling in my voice. I think I just found the distortion button to work around with.
WOW! Chris does a really good impersonation of me @2:17 😂
haha
Thanks😇
Can you do a video on how to sing like Kellin Quinn from Sleeping With Sirens?!
So.. i was in a band for all of high school and part of college, i played bass but me and my friends played and were at shows every weekend. I love music and metal.
I played guitar and sang on my own but was never great.
So about 3 months ago i was feeling like i needed something exciting, a new hobbie and i saw lorna shores new song to the hellfire and have screamed in the past but new was any good and ALWAYS wished i could..Sooooo
I started my journey into trying to learn how to scream, it was baaaaad at first. I practiced every day for like 10-15 min in the car and didnt notice progress for like a month when everything clicked.
And i was trying the same song over and over till i got it perfect. And i got it.
I can now match several metal songs (screaming) in different styles moderately proficiently.
However i also want to learn to sing well, for example killswitch engage-end of heartache when he sings “seek me”.. the ME part, i was finally starting to be able to hit it and between that and screaming. (I got a nice speaker and wireless microphone)
I keep going on these long singing/screaming nights on my weekends and i love it.
But now my voice keeps going horse, and i mean BAD, my dad asked what happened to my voice, and i wanted to take a week off and screwed up and sang/screamed last night.
But it was to the point where even my talking voice, i can say anything with excitement bc the top 20-30% of my vocal range.
Am i screwed?
This was very useful. Thank you. I'm going to embrace my nasally old man.
Wonderful!
Helo Chris. Can u please give some methods or daily tips you can eat/drink or do to heal vocal fatigue or smaller vocal injuries?
I covered these in my new workshops! Have you joined me free course yet?
At 11:09 you managed to flip from a compressed chest note to head voice. I can’t figure out how to do that for the life of me! I have to decompress and then flip, so it sounds more like a transition than a gear switch or voice crack. Do you think my head/chest just aren’t strong enough yet and i need more practice? Does this mean I’m compressing incorrectly? 😳
Hi Chris, I've been told I've a bit of Hiatus and was gave only 1 exercise to get better cord closure. Could make a tutorial for people like me? I get hoarse in two seconds... Or would you recommend me to go see a speech therapist or something like that? This video restored my voice today :D thank you!
Speech therapy would b where you want to start. I actually have a module based on speech therapy in my course Discover Your Voice. you can request an invitation at chrisliepe.com :)
How should or does air flow moderation above the larynx affect the shape of the pharynx?
I’ve been training to maintain the sensation of a passive and open throat, in order to prevent hoarseness causes by the swallowing muscles.
Thank you
It should function independently from the nasopharyngeal passage. It’s lower and should be thought of as such. Smack dab in between primary phonation and the sensations associated with that and the back of tongue and soft palate.
Hey Chris, thanks for you videos !
My classical singing coach almost told me the opposite, ie she would have me sing the more freely possible, not with too much air but not holding back either. Rather having this kind of « it flows without resistance » like it is done with no effort. What do you think about that ?
I’ve experimented both but I can’t find where the truth is
It totally depends on WHERE you are creating the resistance. It is TOTALLY possible to create resistance/hold back air that competes and messes with your cords. But if you do it in the way I'm showing in this video, it works really well and adds all sorts of nice textures!
I’m signing up. I hope this doesn’t lead to another course I have to pay for them. Cause I’ll do it and with Christmas. I’m broke. Thank you for this.
You can buy stuff if you want or can. But enjoy the free content!! Dig in!
I love your videos, Chris :D so cool thank you for your great content
What are your thoughts of the open throat technique? Is it the really the first line of vocal defense when singing night after night? TIA master Chris
...visiting the father-in-law for Christmas... 6:23 🤣
hehe
I never scream or screech. I just sing. I think I have the potential to sing so much better than I do now. But I get sore after singing an hour or so, this keeps me from singing a full gig.. So how can I fix this so I can sing full gigs? I went to an ear nose throat guy last year. He said my throat was irritated but nothing actually wrong no nodes or anything actually physically wrong. So what to do to get from one hour of singing, to singing full 3-4 hour gigs? I need to fix this fast and soon.
Is there any difference between this and your videos on compression?
How do we know if our vocals are getting tired from lack of stamina or bad technique? And should compression feel like im opening and closing the nasal passages in the back of my throat?
9:26 "let's explore more range, by, *aaeeaaaghh*
Hey, Chris! I'm here to make a request for next vocal analysis. Welp, this one might not be a best pick in terms of content-creatorship, but anyway. It's Manuel Karamori, an ex Super Eurobeat singer. I was inspired to sing listening to him. He kinda has a pretty high pitched clean scream voice that I'm still confused about. Please, observe his techniques in a variety of Eurobeat songs all over youtube. There's also Madman titled song that's not on CZcams, but found easily within Deezer or other such platforms.
Great idea!
One thing that concerns me is that when I try to scream my voice cracks and is “itchy” after
Over many years I have learned to really limit allowing air to blow by the vocal folds. Essentially you blow dry them. Not a good thing. I'd rather squeeze than flow uncontrolled air through them.
Exactly!
@VIDEOHEREBOB What would be your advices to limit air amount and increase cord closure?
I go horse after band practice everytime. but my throat is not hurting while i sing and i think my breath support is pretty good, can it be ´cos of overuse of the voice? and how dangerous is it
Now it’s not about how much air you push through the vocal folds. It’s about the air pressure on the vocal folds. When I was trying to find my whistle register, I got hoarse even though I leaked just a tiny bit of the air - because I overpushed the air from my diafragm onto my almost totally closed vocal folds.
The air pressure is the key, not the air flow through them. These are close and often related things, but they aren’t the same
Is compression related to volume? Is it possible to have high compression and high volume at the same time?
They are related and it is possible to have any combination. It's the beauty of airflow management with correctly dialed in support!
I currently have a cold / soreish throat so no singing for me
It always happens with me😁
I'm a pretty open person but LMAO I get what he is saying but this singing technique is too funny!
I know you’ve answered this before but I can’t find the video, I believe I’m getting very sick with a virus and my voice will most likely get laryngitis and such I don’t know what to do
Don't stop talking altogether, but take it super easy! "Singing when Sick" is the name of the video :)
choice of mic and how you use it. lots of live singers use pedals to flit between different effects/reverbs to get their sustains etc. just like an electric guitarist.
sm58: close, centred and personal for bass, sing at an angle to the bullseye but close for pitch and sustain. no need to blast out with mic at a distance then. use the technology!
Is it normal to get hoarse during specifically false chord growls?
nope... not normal. You can use less air (or learn to) and not get hoarse!
It’s official, Chris has lost it
Haha. This was the video that made it official??
@@chrisliepe I'll carry on watching through the madness , hell maybe you'll turn into the singing coaches version of a mad scientist haha
But in all seriousness you have helped me with my singing a lot , mainly mentally i think , in how now i just know that when you start a new technique , you're going to sound..well embarrassingly stupid (especially to my neighbours lol) whilst you experiment with your voice, but by having fun with that, and it is definitely is fun (sorry neighbours)
you just get past those mental barriers and end up having so much fun being dumb and learning a lot...and after years i'm finally finding my headvoice!
.....i do feel bad for my neighbours though....
@@chrisliepe I think that boat sailed long ago. But that's how we improve
I keep watching these videos because im supposed to start singing at my church and half way through every time I realize i don't want to sound anything like this 🤣
2:16 whats the name of this offspring's song?
I’m curious?
@@chrisliepe the high notes sounded just like dexter holland haha
(Stupid unrelated question) but what is the chord progression? Just G to C or more?
I think I threw in a random Asus, but mostly G and C
This funny as heck
