Fun fact for anyone who didn't know: Woodpeckers tongues are wrapped around their skull, and it absorbs the shock from pecking through the wood!

I have these same woodpeckers at my family cottage in Ontario that visit often on the trees about 10 feet into the bush. I need to record them and post the videos. I’m not sure if it’s certain trees that make the ones I see often behave different or if they are just building nests and they are using a different technique, but when they peck at the tree they don’t go as fast as shown in this video, they take longer single “pecks” at the wood, like they are chiseling it/carving the tree then they hop to the left three inches, chop the same area from a different angle, hop back three inches to the right and chop from initial angle, well while they are switching the angle of attack, wood is flying everywhere, they take out fairly large chunks with each “peck” they take you would think they are holding a small axe.
It’s amazing to watch and they do this very often, I’ll try to get it on video.

If you focus on the back of the woodpecker's head....it looks like two eyes looking back at you! It reminds me of when people who walk through jungles wear a mask with two big eyes painted on it attached to the back of their head. It has shown that predator animals don't attack humans that are "looking" at them. This bird only looks from side to side, never up, and back.
