I always found it interesting how deep into the movie this first song sequence is. It's only when Selma's life really begins to fall apart that she really starts to retreat into her fantasy world of music, and we get to go with her.
Bjork on the song, 'Cvalda.' This absorption of environmental realism into the fabric of the music begins as an industrial symphony that suggests the art of noise theories of the Italian Futurists and Pierre Schaeffer's Musique Concrète innovations of the late 1940s. For Björk, this raised the danger that these concrete rhythms would be too dispersed. "We didn't know how strong we could make the beats if we couldn't use any drum machines or drums. First it sounded as if it would be too bric-a-brac to hold the tunes. Then, as the music and melodies coalesced, the need to create a strong atmosphere of fantasy demanded a full orchestra." - Bjork
The amazing thing about this is that it almost reminds me of someone taking Alexander Mossolov's orchestral piece "Iron Foundry" and turning it into a dream-sequence dance scene with voices. It's so marvelous... ❤
My favorite moment of this scene: Cvalda (Catherine Deneuve) singing: "Darling Selma... look who's dancing..." - as if she had been hypnotized by Selma's song and voice 😊👏
Joy! This song has always really stood out for me - maybe something to do with Bjork's character creating such a joyful space in the midst of such bleakness through sheer size of heart - I could listen to it endlessly after first watching the movie and it still holds..
Bjork is a genius, she is simply a brilliant soul! This is a joy to watch and a moment of euphoria in what becomes a very dark film at the end. Bjork es la ultima artista!
LOVE this Movie, altough it has a Shocking End and always makes me go to Bed in Tears.... But This Very Song is AMAZING and always makes me wanna get off the Couch and try some Dance Stps !!!!
I want to watch this movie, though I don't want to think that I like it right away just because I love Björk to death. Is the movie really good, or do most people think it is amazing because they love Björk? I'm just assuming that that's the most popular reason people watch this movie. The technical quality doesn't look too good, though that doesn't always matter. I know it is a sad story. But is the movie actually good? Is Björk a good actress?
It is one of the most powerful movies of all time. Cathrine Deneve, David Morse, Peter Stormare and Bjork herself above all- all perform brilliantly, it is a heartbreaking, deep and intelligent movie, and a one-of-a-kind musical that sweeps you off your feet without being all gooey like so much musicals. Bjork's music and presence is a big part of the attraction, but the director Lars Von Trier is equally a magnet for the viewers. But this movie is perfectionin so much more ways than these two. This movie makes you fall in love with Selma (the main character) and than effectively wrecks you and traumatizes you for life. But it is beyond the shadow of a doubt, a must watch!
I didn’t even know who she was until I watched this movie last night, and now I cannot stop thinking of her. My heart goes out to her character and yes while the quality is older I suggest watching the movie in its entirety.
I saw The Sound of Music the other day and it brought all the tears back...that's the real reason I can never watch this movie again. In the Hereafter I'm going to Re-kill Bill that is for sure...
I think it set up the mind set of the character and the title of the film. Most of the time she’s only happy when taking notice of the smallest things in life while she’s sings and dance. When she stop singing things become crappy again.

And that's the beautiful and very haunting tragedy of it all.....
And most of it for the love of her real son...
There's an interview for this movie where she talks about it.
She must be a composer's dream to work with. Her voice is an instrument in of itself.
everything is an instrument if it makes sound
@@ryacoli spot on
All the film's music was composed by Bjork too
This is the only movie in my entire life that has made me cry, sob, wail. My favorite musical of all time.

clatter, crash, clack!
i love this song and this whole scene
Anyone else love how for most of the film, its shot in the Dogma 95 style, yet when it's a musical number its shot like a big budget musical?
Yup. With atleast a hundred different camera angles. :D
Selma recognized magic in the most ordinary places, she chose to see beauty in everything. I like to think I live that way, too.
My favorite moment of this scene: Cvalda (Catherine Deneuve) singing: "Darling Selma... look who's dancing..." - as if she had been hypnotized by Selma's song and voice 😊👏
The beats just before that are fucking awesome
Next year is the 20th anniversary of dancer in the dark

Personajes como estos nunca morirán... Selma y Cvalda.
Hermoso, ver a Selma tan feliz!

Does somebody have others musical comedies like that they would recommend I really liked this movie
I’m not crying- it’s so joyful and happy and to think it’s all happening in her head to escape her grim reality. Damn tears!
My high school’s color guard did a winterguard show to this song and it was steam punk inspired. It was so fun!!
Best Musical of all time Period
You clearly haven't seen Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny
You can watch it. I liked her very much, and the movie is great. But be carefull, i must spend a lot of tears after watching this movie.
I love this song so freaking much it's my username now
The second you realize she put a second sheet in the press 😳🥺

love this music. love the movie. something all must experience at least once in their life time for sure..
The orchestral part starting at 2:28 reminds me of Maurice Ravel’s music
OBRA MAESTRA INCONTESTABLE
Cheers for getting the Joke, Fwend 4ever
I remember when i watched this movie and saw this scene at first i was like oh for fucks sake, but it ended up being suuuuper good
I love her voice. Just sooo beautiful!
The best musical
Love this musical. It's so sed.
is there ANYTHING that this wonderful artist cannot do with sound? No. No there is not. Pure and simple...
Bjork's voice in this song is so softly childish and sexy! I really love those sounds coming out Bjork's mouth
The best movie ever...♥
The Cadets did a BADASS job with Bjork's music.
@newentu talento! merecia el oscar esta mujer
Yum and Good Distort
This scene kind of reminds me of the beginning of music. The slaves working used the sounds of the working as a rhythm.
